In my opinion, this was low-hanging fruit. I don't believe for a second that this is the worst thing they found. I believe the NFL is covering up anything that might damage the brand far more than this Gruden stuff.

Yes it did but it was uncovered during an investigation by a private firm hired by the attorneys of the WFT in trying to sort out sexism and bigotry in the teams management. I feel that is very likely Goodell used it against him because of the way gruden acted towards him personally.

I'm not a fan of Gruden but what was done to him was unfair. The NFL front office weaponized a decade old private communication, anonymously leaking it to the press to destroy his reputation and career. They would never out one of their current owners, only coaches and players who they don't like.

Not to suggest the NFL planned this exactly, but Gruden resigning as quickly as he did allows for other teams to not get looked at with as much scrutiny until this boils over. Meaning that if the WFT investigation is going badly enough the NFL can cover it up.

How could Gruden be so stupid as to put such sentiments in an email? You don't wake up one morning and start doing it. He must have felt he was in a safe place, and was sharing his thoughts with like minds. Maybe nothing more will come of it, but that certainly doesn't mean it's gone away. I Agee with all you’ve said. 2 points : I would say as a man who played in my youth - and over the sexual preference thing but I guarantee the majority of NFL players by a long shot would if asked in private would choose to play with straight players. The Gruden thing I suspect - he must have pissed the higher ups off somehow. Think about it/ the man is going after it; endorsements, TV and a Coach huge contract.. Who goes through someone’s emails from 10 years ago. And then who picks who’s emails to expose to public a decade or more later. Yeah the NFL took him down. Wanted to show him he’s not bigger than the game too. Sad all the way around.

This wasn't one e-mail from 10 years ago, this involved many e-mails spanning the years 2011 to 2018 when he was then hired to be the Raiders' head coach again.

So that's false. The Michelin lips was 10 years ago. Some of the female referees, queen language and fa* words dropped were over the span of 2011 to 2018. The fact that some emails were in 2018 is a problem. Also if it was any 1 thing said he'd be fine, but the racial undertones, along with offending the LGBTQ community, along with his comments about women referees adds up to just more than he can come back from.

Gruden loves the veneer of the raiders of excessive violence and bringing in has teens and intimidating others. But the raiders were at the vanguard to hire a woman as a CEO and hire the first black coach. As a side note the raiders also created fantasy football and through there play have changed more rules than any other team.

I have been a Raiders fan since 1979 and a Gruden fan from back when he 1st coached the team, but- as you put it best, Rich- his continuing to be a representative of the Team, the Players, Fans and the NFL in any capacity was untenable. I most hope that he and so many others learn from this experience in that, yes, words do matter, inclusivity is not suggested, rather required and that hateful speech will not be tolerated. I feel very sorry for his family and how embarrassing this must all be for them. You do not just hurt others with your words, but those you actually do care about, as well. ✌☠🖤
