Honestly, Giannis deserves a lot of credit for in a tough moment having such a well thought out response to a question that gave the journalist a ton more than the tired old traditional responses. He also was incredibly respectful to the journalist. Big props.

@@r8td let me preface by saying I agree with everything you said (except there's a difference between losing a game and a series), but the reporters question isn't about what an ordinary person would think in regards to a first round loss by a 1 seed, it's about the response of an elite athlete who is currently one of the top 3-5 players in the NBA. And for someone in that position given the mindset it takes to get there they would consider in a failure. Also Jordan and the Bulls never lost a series when they were the number 1 seed in the east.

I can understand Giannis’s point of view. He is looking at the macro process for success. Failure doesn’t exist , just results - in the macro sense Like how Dirk Nowitki’s losses in 2006 and 2007 helped him prepare for 2011. Lebron’s 2011 , helped him prepare for 2012 and 2013. Even though Dirk won in 2011 , we still consider 2006 and 2007 as failures as singular seasons. Even though Lebron has won multiple championships , we will see 2011 as a failure as a singular season. Giannis can come back next year and win a championship , it still won’t erase the fact the 2023 season was a failure. In essence , failure is both a destination and a process. Giannis is half right. He can use this season to get better and yes the Milwaukee Bucks failed this year

He doesn’t see it that way though, and that’s perfectly fine. Everyone has their own way of seeing things. You’re saying if he wins a championship next year that this year would still be a failure right? His goal was never to not fail, it was to win a championship. Winning a championship is all that matters to him, so if he loses 10x in that process, it isn’t a failure to him because if he ends up winning one then that’s all that matters. Just like in football plenty of teams would absolutely pick winning a ring and then sucking for the next 5-6 years. Why? Because winning a ring is all that matters and if that makes you lose the next few years then it wasn’t a failure because the ultimate goal was to win the championship no matter how long it took

100% agree with Giannis. Yes, the ending to the season was disappointing because Milwaukee had a chance to go deep but Giannis got hurt. Anybody would be upset about feeling like they let their team down. But a failure? Absolutely not, and that term needs to go away for stars who don't get as far as we expect them to. Failures are reserved to teams that tank, front offices that trade in their future for a couple years chasing rings and don't get there. Brooklyn was a failure, the Sixers are a failure. The Bucks, 2021 Champs, are not a failure.

Being a 1 seed got beaten so badly by an 8th seed is a failure, no matter what you say, it is catastrophe and a meltdown. Giannis should go and practice free throws in the summer. He was abysmal.
