The one exception of someone maintaining a level (at least until he got completely disconnected from reality) was Dre, and he actually kept that model -- lots of people working together on the same record during the same session. Chuck D also talked about that the other day -- how it was groups of MCs going back and forth, with an in-house DJ and a whole bunch of people behind the scenes, all working together. Now a producer makes a beat, files it in the library, then it gets sold to some MC over the internet, possibly years later, no direct contact whatsoever. No wonder it is all canned and formulaic.
