This is our cover version of the progressive rock epic, Close To The Edge by Yes!
Ann Marie Nacchio - Vocals
Chris Clark - Keyboards
Andy Grazaino - Guitars/Vocals
Richie Castellano - Bass/Vocals
Andy Ascolese - Drums/Vocals
Jarrett Pressman - Foley FX
Additional Ambient FX by Richie Castellano
Mixed and Edited by Richie Castellano
This goes with Band Geek episode 140 which can be found here:
• Band Geek 140 - Chris ...
A few people have been asking about the production of this. We recorded live in the same room together. We all have separate monitor mixes in our Audio-Technica headphones via the MOTU 1248. The final product you're seeing is comprised of a few takes from this session. I'm one guy doing all the production myself so I do need to stop to fix cameras, monitors, etc... We recorded MIDI data from the drums and keyboards. During the mix phase, I used BFD3 and Abbey Road Drum Libraries instead of the stock Roland sounds. Most of the keyboard sounds are directly from Chris's keyboards, but some of the Mellotrons and Synths are coming from IK Multimedia SampleTank. The guitar and bass tones are all coming from the Line 6 Helix.
Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, I'm blown away by these comments. I just want to clarify something here. This isn't a bunch of music snobs showing off. This is genuine love for Yes and their music. We are hardcore Yes fans and this video is not about conquering a song or doing it better than anyone. It's about the joy of indulging our inner teenagers and being lucky enough to get the opportunity to play our favorite music. Andy, Andy and I had a band in high school and dreamed of playing this. We never could get the vocals or keyboards right. We were very fortunate to have Chris Clark and my wife help us make this dream a reality. Thank you for watching. I'll probably run into some of you guys on the next Yes or ARW tour. I'll be the one in the audience screaming his head off!

Richie Castellano I havent read all the comments but if anyone is offering negative criticism I’ll be happy to kick them in the jimmy. What you said comes straight across in your performance. You have generously shared your love of this music that people like me grew up on and love. All I see is an amazing performance, respect for the art and a moment to share something really special and to connect with me your grateful audience. I name this song as the single most important one to me personally. It opened wide the world of music to me. Not just prog. It gave me the ability to get into everything from abba to Zappa. No shit. You guys are friggin awesome and I thank you for putting in what it takes to honor all the great music that you do.

I think that's why it is so spectacular...because Yes wasn't a bunch of music snobs showing off either, it was a bunch of guys that got together to play the music that felt right to them. I think most people don't realize or lose sight of this because the music that flowed out of them just happened to be, more often than not, more complex and possibly harder to access than other stuff in rock and pop music. I, too, dreamed of being able to play this song in high school, and although that will not happen for me in this lifetime, I am quite pleased and thrilled to see that you and your band mates have done Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick, and Bill very proud! Congrats, thanks again, and as always, float your climb!!!

My opinion: the song’s emotional climax (the last chorus of “I get up, I get down…” in the final 90 seconds) is more moving when she sings it than when Jon does. She’d built up to that peak moment and it feels more “earned” than with Jon. I can’t explain it any better.

Never in all those 50 years did I at any time expect anyone to attempt a cover of this song and do it justice but what you guys have done here has exceeded every expectation I might have harboured during those 50 years. I thought I had seen the best cover in the "Close to the Yes" version, and indeed the vocalist in that version has an energy and spark that is very different from Ms. Castellano. However, the humor and coral electric sitar-sim in this one puts it on top. I had the chance to see Wakeman on his raconteur tour and his humor is evident here. The only thing I'd suggest is having the drummer eat ramen noodles, as Wakeman famously did during the Tales tour when he got bored.

I periodically always come back to this and appreciate Richie's comments again about being incredible YES fans and honoring them and their timeless music. Saw Jon this summer with the young Rock Academy celebrate 50th anniversary of Close To The Edge. Wonderful! To me, with all the other accolades of their musicianship and song writing abilities, YES music evokes FEELING like no other music I know. Close To The Edge, perhaps, evokes it more than any other of YES's masterpieces! That's why I sill love them more than 50 years later! Gottfried van Swieten taught the by then already dead and forgotten Bach and Handel to Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. It was then that classical music concerts began to include scores from dead composers--they were too good to be forgotten. Something of the sort should be happening with some of the best rock music has to offer. "Close to the Edge" is certainly among the very best, and it's a joy to see it, as well as hear it performed. I reiterate my felicitations. And gratitude.

I know this is an older video, but I still want to throw my comment in here. Obviously all of you are incredible musicians to start, but managing all of the vocal arrangements in this song just puts it over the top for not only this Yes song, but any Yes cover I've ever heard! I also want to give extra credit to the drummer for playing this song on what appears to be an older rubber pad Roland kit, AND getting some reading time in during his coffee break! That is truly making the most of your time and equipment.. haha. Incredible job by all of you.

OMG, this was worth the wait! A new high-water-mark has been set in difficulty...beyond awesome people! Hand-shredding virtual applause for all of you...no one has ever performed the legendary Yes better in a basement, I'll wager! Graziano, simply over-the-top brilliant and Chris Clark nailed the keys while Ascolese gets more out of a Roland trap than I would have guessed possible! Never easy to take on Jon Anderson's vocals, but Ann Marie is superb once again! Did I mention how feverishly awesome Chris did on the keys? Wow! Richie, great backing vocals and mix ... not to mention you did a very fine tribute to Chris Squire with your bass! In a word, stunning!

I'm a totally blind keyboard player from New Jersey and all my life, from the time I first found progressive rock, I wished I could be in a band with musicians this this good that would want to do this kind of music to an audience that would be accepting and appreciative to listen to it. Never found that combination, sadly. At 46 years of age, I'm beginning to think I never will. Hell, I'd have to work really hard to nail this. It's so awesome that you guys click so well, record this stuff, put it on youtube and amazingly, have fans who love it, including me. I give thumbs up to all of you, including and especially the keyboard player for nailing my favorite part, the church organ through the solo into the last verse. Great stuff. Be thankful that the stars alligned for you all in the way that they did. Maybe before I die, I can also achieve this dream.

Really. Nicely. Done. I was in 7th grade when this record was released. Ran to the record store and bought it immediately. I was enthralled by the music and artwork. Un-Bee-Leavable! Absolutely nailed it, best cover I've ever heard/watched. Steve Howe once said that "Close" was by far their most difficult piece to reproduce in concert. Should speak volumes as to how beautifully you folks did this. As with Floyd's Wish You Were Here LP being their pinnacle so it was with Yes' Close To The Edge LP. We were so lucky to have grown up with this music. Thank you for doing this with such style and perfection. Your affection toward the original band members and their music shows and you delivered it with justice.

Wow, great job guys (and gal). This song came out in my senior year in HS. But I hadn't heard it until my freshman year at a HBCU. Being a black guy who into R&R, it was kind of hard to find other classmates into the same thing at a black college. I was DJ'ing at the student union one night when I start talking to this one girl. We found we both liked rock and roll music. She ask if I ever heard of a group called YES. I said yeah, that song Roundabout. She invited me back to her room and turned me on to Close to the Edge. I was blown away, I been a YES fan ever since. Seen them in concert four times. Even saw Rick Wakemans Six Wives of Henry the viii concert. Excellent job of recreating this song. You guys deserve a big pat on the back.
