So I spent a short stint working at a ford dealership. I'll tell you this, anyone that spends 100k on a truck is not looking to do normal truck things with it. These raptor owners are literally princesses. We were repairing a truck that ended up having to go elsewhere. The guy told us not to put any parts in his truck bed as it would damage the bed. I could not understand how you have a truck and literally do not want to use it like a truck. Cyber truck is just another version of that.

@solomonshv

yea, that was pitiful. from what i've seen in person with these trucks, it seems the issues is that the front wheels don't turn enough. tesla added extra extremely expensive failure points to compensate for a terrible design. i've seen one of these turn side by side with a BMW X6. when you see it in person, the difference in front wheel turning action is jarring

Somewhere between 9-13 inches difference in wheelbase depending on what year the Suburban is.

As a owner of many years of the only other stainless steel car there is something I have to add. Stainless body is pig to keep clean. Every finger mark, every drop of rain, every spot of dirt is visible from miles. No matter what you do the bodywork is never clean. Like shiny clean. Also the other car is made from AISI 304 steel and still there are sometimes smudges of rust, Tesla is AISI 301 which is even less resistant to rust.

One thing I've noticed about the stainless - they always appear like the panels were produced from different batches of steel alloy (maybe it's the press or heat treating process) - which almost gives it that look like a car that's been repainted in someone's back yard ... with spray cans. Usually if you have a dent in a door on a regular car, the body shop will blend the paint into the surrounding panels - but you can't do that here (and who knows what "batch" the replacement panels are going to come from). I would say, IF I had the money to buy one of these, I would wrap it in a stainless or titanium looking vinyl to make that look even. You never see that "defect" on DeLoreans - they're all one pretty shade of silver-grey.
@danw1955

Absolutely correct!! That was the first thing I mentioned in my comment. It looks like it was thrown together with used parts, and I'd take a DeLorean any day over this behemoth! It's the grain of stainless steel. There is a reason why 99.9% of cars are steel and painted.
@peglor
@peglor Ай бұрын
There is a theory that the reason they're making these is because SpaceX bought a load of stainless steel for one of their rockets, discovered it was junk and realised that using it as panels on the Cybertruck was a much better idea than taking a loss on it. Also, calling the panels an exoskeleton is not really true, as my understanding is that they're not structural (Or any more structural than the external panels on any other car anyway). The Cybertruck has all the same internal structures to carry the operating loads as most other cars, so it's just got heavier panels with sharper edges rather than anything revolutionizing vehicle structural design. The only useful thing the Cybertruck does from an engineering standpoint is to use 48V architecture for all the accessories, which will save on copper in the wiring, but from a consumer/functional point of view nothing will feel or work differently. Lots of hybrid and mild hybrid cars have 48V systems in them from well before the Cybertruck, but it is the first car I'm aware of that claims not to have any 12 V systems. It wouldn't even slightly surprise me to find out in subsequent teardowns that they're using DC to DC convertors to drop from 48 to 12 V for some of the accessories anyway though, given their long history of lying about their products. Actual trucks have been 24 V for decades already, so for a vehicle marketing itself as a 'truck', it's not as impressive a change as it initially sounds.

From a metalworker on youtube who was in a review video- Stainless especially (but all metals in some form) have an inherent problem called "oil canning" where when cooling, they shrink slightly and bunch up. Stainless does it more than others because of it's composition, and preventing that problem is why you hear about "cold rolling" and why metal roofs are only now being used for homes (because in the past getting large, flat sheets consistently like that was difficult). Another problem is that additional clear coating for protection costs more from Tesla, so the alternate appearances could just be due to some owners getting that applied but every steel panel being -slightly- different.

The opinion out here in ranch country, is it's an electric vegetable chopper. It fails the basic requirement of delivering a bale of hay to a cow in a pasture. My '77 VW Rabbit Diesel Pickup garners much admiration for delivering on this chore while getting 50mpg, screw towing.

@shangoobakoso9084 Trust how we do math out at the ranch. Rabbit "runs red", i.e. untaxed ag fuel as it is no longer a highway vehicle; has only ever had batteries replaced, aside from fuses/crank-handles and such, 50mpg x 350K miles + original purchase price = what it costs to keep a 3-ton lithium battery at operating temperature six months out of the year up here. I don't want a Cyber Truck, its just not usable for my urban life but I would want it because its different, its a risk, a challenge instead of the same old - crap em out Lexus or the F-150. Couldn't seen the sides without giant mirrors. The same? I think so. Hell I use to drive an Aztek (remember the rear view on that sucker?) I am old enough to remember he Honda Prelude AWS and at the time it delivered fantastic handling that was better than the non 4WS Prelude and which improved parking. But you are 100% right it just became another thing that broke as the cars got older plus I seem to recall there was a slight increase in tyre wear. The Prelude 4WS became a car people didn't want when they got out of warranty and clocked 100,000 kms or more as the maintenance and repair costs were high. With engineering and research Honda was able to make subsequent Preludes handle at least as well if not better without the complexity of the 4WS.

I'm not a huge Matt Farah fan, but I thought he had excellent insight about the Cybertruck's main shortcoming: None of the interesting technological features, e.g. 4 wheel steering, 48 volt architecture, steer by wire, etc. required something that was as hard to manufacture, dangerous to pedestrians and other vehicles, and as polarizing as the Cybertruck. If Tesla had revamped, say, the model X with those new technologies as their high-end vehicle, they'd have had something.

The exoskeleton was dropped because it was stupid, since that car could not be repaired - a dented panel could not be bolted on, you'd have to cut the steel out and weld in a patch, and trust that the weld would be invisible, expansion would match perfectly, (and that the dent was *entirely* cut out, since even a subtle bend could cup the patch) even though the steel is a confidential alloy that can only be sourced from sweden.

No different than we can’t have simple built, affordable vehicles in the US because we live in a nanny state where millions of slow leak’s demand the government provide their safety.. Then they cry because we can’t buy simple affordable KEI vehicles and blame it on US automakers. To busy blaming automakers instead of looking at the government instead of looking at history when small, simple, affordable Japanese cars started flooding the market in the 60’s and US automakers seen their was a demand and started building their own versions.. They cry and pretend it’s the US automakers like they are incapable of building small, simple, affordable vehicles.. Even imports are massive compared to the 60’s -90’s to meet all the BS regulations. Even Mini’s are massive compared to what they use to be. I’m a red blooded American but I still think it would be cool to be able to buy a mini the size they use to be with a modern fuel injected supercharged engine with a 5 or 6 speed manual.. That would be a ridiculously fun car to drive, very fuel efficient and easier on the environment than burning coal to produce and charge EV batteries.,
