People always respond to sincerity. He can sing. He's an entertainer. It's obvious how much doing the Smiths meant to him and that translates to the crowd. Their reaction is plain to see. One of those great Glastonbury moments.

@@muhsinkartvizit ironically enough, even though im a guitarist mainly, i learned to play bass just for this one song initially. the bassline is just so delicately fun to play, and is still to this day a song i prefer to play on bass rather than guitar even though i know both

I understand people may not like, or even find offensive to have Rick Astley singing the Smiths. It s their problem. May I remind you Morrissey, since you mentioned him, did drop a line praising Rick for carrying on singing their songs. So it seems your fancy word ‘dystopia’ doesn’t quite apply in this particular case. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. Simple, inn it ?

0:40 The guitarist's headshake and the drummer's *enormous* smile in response is just too precious. The entire band must be feeling absolutely overwhelmed by a sense of "how is this happening right now?" The band and Rick absolutely killed it!

I don't know how big the woodsie tent is but it doesn't look small and they packed it out with people outside who couldn't get in... What a performance and delivery of some of the best songs of the Smiths 👏👏👏👏

Played the original Smiths version at my late wife's funeral (on her last request) in 2011 who passed away so young, she loved The smiths. Do a good version here Rick.

You see Ricks voice is a lot better,stronger and richer and more melodic than Morriseys.This is the truth,and thats why the Smiths songs sound so much better sung by him.(sorry Morrisey, but they do.)

As bloody fantastic as Rick and the band are - and genuinely, they absolutely CRUSHED it - the thing which really brought tears to my eyes was the whole arena echoing with the sound of thousands of voices singing along with this beloved tune. I wish I could've been there for this.

The drummers face of pure excited joy reflects my own at discovering this, a matchup i never expected but man it’s glorious. And Rick clearly knows his stuff, the hair style, the Marry Me sign, the microphone swinging, never knew he was a Smiths fan. Massive kudos to the guy he nailed it

The energy Rick gives to these songs live is beyond. You can tell it's a genuine enjoyment for the whole band to be playing. Every note is absolutely spot on as well which can't of been easy in that heat! BBC, please put the whole set onto KZfaq!

@@alan-sk7ky Rick Astley has his own brand of cool though, it's a little odd, but Glastonbury famously embraces these kinds of acts, especially on Sunday afternoons when the entire crowd needs a lift from the excesses of the last few days..... I remember Rolf Harris (obviously before the world found out what a horrific monster he was) doing the Sunday set on the main stage back along, and the crowd loved him, even though you'd never describe him as cool in any sort of fashion.

This is such a blast from the past! A PROPER performance along with an audience, not on their fucking phones, or barely paying any attention to the band in front of them. Astley looks fantastic, and sounds better, whilst The Blossoms owned it, and a special shoutout to the drummer who looked so thrilled. Joy personified!

Fair play to Joe Donovan not over-playing on the drums. You can just tell Blossoms are loving this. The world needs more people like these guys - just having fun and not taking themselves too seriously.

The strings were 100% spot on. To think, Johnny Marr composed the strings in the original, all by himself. That blows my mind. The Smiths will always live, even though they died. 👍

I was a huge fan of Rick's in the 80's, and spent years listening to the jokes about him. I am so happy to see him win Glastonbury this year with such ease. And i love to see the respect he's getting from the same people who couldn't stand him back in the day!! ❤

I love that they didn't neglect any of the instrumental parts, everything is in there! I feel like sometimes memorable elements get hazed over when singers want to sing what they love and the band doesn't get the time to actually put it together so it sounds heavy-handed.
