The rocks along the edges of that train floor is absolute genius level interior decorating mastery. It does so much for the space with no danger to the students and for a tiny cost.

Wow. At age 51, after 30 years of Shotokan training, I have noticed myself making excuses for slowing down a bit, not being as sharp (“Well, I am getting older after all...”). But after seeing Sensei Hotton’s astounding technique at age 64 , I realize I have no excuse other than being lazy. Thank you so much and osu!

"After 50 years of practice I'm still finding things in my technique that I didn't know two years ago." It is this, his Beginner's Mind, that drives us all to listen to Hotton Sensei. Beautifully done. And sublime falls, Dan! Much love from Pennsylvania to you all. -Bruce Costa

Ahh yes, shoshin (beginners mind). It's been a big part of my training philosophy for years. More people should understand this. I see you're in Pa. me too!

Thank you so much for this video! It's amazing! As someone who has trained years in Shotokan and even more years in Aikido - this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. I'm not sure if it looks to you like karate with some elements of aikido infused into it (because it does totally look like that), but the great thing about everything in this video is that it's not just SOME aikido elements - everything in there is 100% aikido. I've literally practiced those exact techniques in aikido classes (albeit, higher level aikido classes). And this is something that a lot of people don't understand about martial arts (I'm excluding you from this statement because I know you know this), that something can indeed be 100% karate and also 100% aikido. There's no contradictions. People who practice more than just one art, and get to a high enough level, usually discover the fact that different arts mostly boil down to the same elements once you get to a high enough level.

Much respect to Hotton sensei and all that teaches us. These concepts are interesting. The only improvement I'd say is necessary is bringing these concepts into more live drills, and not just static oi-tsukis, because let us be honest, who would do that in any sort of physical confrontation? Practicality should never be sacrificed for the sake of pure technique.

And the thing that binds them. Is they both learned from traditional Masters, not sport Karate teachers. Fundamentals will see you through life. They are the foundation on which the whole building of Karate do stands🙂🙂🙂

There is a feeling and mindset to these type of techniques that is very difficult to teach.

Remember Sensei Hotton is also an Aikido black belt too. He has combined Aikido philosophy and principles of body awareness into his Shotokan. This has created a style that has increased kinetic energy and directed power. Power generated from the ground upwards and forwards.
