Great to hear Rick talk about this subject, and his experience, it is so real. I had the same operation 4 years ago, out of nowhere, experiencing the same symptoms; immediate referral to an NHS hospital that specialised in cardiology who promptly performed an angiogram, exactly as Rick describes, but in my case believing a stent may be inserted during the procedure, however, the consultant advised me in recovery that like Rick, my situation was critical and a bypass operation was required within the next 48 hours. As Rick explains, there's a short period of disbelieve and reality to come to terms with, as with family and friends, and, I was a none smoker and a very moderate drinker. Maybe Francis Rossi's explanation regarding Rick's heart related issues, that his rock and roll life style had caught up with him, was a little too simplistic and misinformed because heart disease has many causes, often a genetic, though addiction to nicotine over a long period would have had a causal effect. At the end of the interview, the interviewer and Rick were in doubt as to whether he actually required his by-pass operation ! In my case the NHS consultant showed my wife and I the live angiogram recording which clearly showed the diseased left main artery which if it fails in everyday life, there is little to zero chance of recovery, commonly known as the `widow maker'. He explained there was little time to lose, and having seen the images and received the explanation, there really was little doubt regarding my condition and to trust the expertise of the specialists; I hope Rick was presented with the same evidence and explanation, but like he said, at the time there's a lot to take in in such a short and unexpected time frame, so maybe it passed him by in the fog of confusion. Like Rick, I was also told that the operation generally last for 10 years, so the years passing and the years left are always mindful. My consultant advised, `just live and enjoy the rest of your life'. Good advice I think, and considering Ricks lifestyle, I think he did really well. Thank you Nyquest for publishing this interview, there a very serious messages here that could save lives. Like Rick, if you experience chest pains like never before, don't waste any time, make an appointment to see your doctor. R.I.P. Rick - you are greatly missed.

You've said what I was going to say! They would have known what % arteries were blocked and no question he would have needed the operation. My dad had a triple in 1992 and he lived another 30 years and was never told as far as I'm aware about it lasting 10 years. I remember also at the time Rick had it done at the Wellington hospital in London and his surgeon was the same one that operated on dad! I knew Rick had been with a very safe pair of hands! Dad and Rick have both gone and I miss them so much.🙏🫂😔

If this was filmed in roughly 2011 (14 years after the op), it sounds like Rick was starting to believe he was ok, when as we now know he had further heart attacks in 2014 and 2016 and was dead by the end of 2016, about 5 years after this. Not sure what the lesson is. In some respects he did well to last another 19 years (my dad lasted 15 years after a quad bypass and died almost 88), but on the other hand he might have lived longer if he had taken more care and listened to medical advice.

Considering his indulgent lifestyle, he was rather lucky to get 68 years in.

I've enjoyed all the Nyquest interviews with the SQ band members, but I find Rick particularly the most natural communicator, able to connect at ease to a wider audience. Maybe his early days in Cabaret and clubs, working with a wide variety of entertainers, provided a showbiz grounding that other band members had little experience off. He wanted to become a rockstar, focused only on playing rhythm guitar - hard and loud, and he became one of the best rock rhythm guitarists, possibly the best, but Rick also had the versatility at hand to slip back into showbiz and pop music with ease. Interestingly, after watching his return to Sunnyside holiday camp with Jean and Gloria, he comments and believes that they were a good trio with great harmonies, and maybe with the right exposure they could have made it with their first record! In retrospect, Rick appears a little conflicted. We'll never know, but I've always thought that had SQ split in '84 and gone their separate ways, Rick could/would have succeeded as a solo artist and could have easily gone on to present TV shows in his later years because he connects so well. Rick understood showbiz, and he had learnt from his early start at Sunnyside the importance of engaging with the audience and fans, on and off stage, and he often comments on the importance of being nice, avoiding confrontations. I think this interview, more than any other, demonstrates Rick's potential, in as much as he's able to talk on camera about a medical subject which although is based on his own experience, is engaging and relatable to a mainstream audience, for example, you most certainly do not need to be an SQ fan to take an interest in this film. Undoubtedly, Rick loved his rockstar status, and the fans, and he continued his public support for the band, irrespective of disagreements and the coming and going of band members, and maybe his loyalty to SQ was an obstacle for opportunities in other areas of mainstream entertainment. It appears from watching the many TV interviews over the years with Rick and Francis when promoting tours and albums that although Francis is the `number 1', it's interesting that Rick is the most coherent and engaging and the interviewer, and sometimes panels of interviewers, appear to gravitate to Rick for comment and analysis and he delivered interesting facts and stories entertainingly without causing any offence, Francis mainly operating in a support roll. Irrespectively though, in the public eye, SQ were Rick and Francis, but, I do believe that Rick's many PR contributions to the wellbeing of SQ were largely unappreciated by some members of SQ ! R.I.P. Rick - you are greatly missed.

Well put. Each member of the band has their role to play same is all walks of life. FR gets something of a bashing from fans Rick stayed along side so this is an indication FR is very important to SQ. We found Francis to be great company although we aren't in a band with him but speak as you find we could see why Rick would be friends with Francis. Rick was very friendly especially here at his villa in Spain, he fed and watered the crew as well as supplying plenty of Melvins, a great host, interviewee, talent and man.

I really enjoyed Status Quo over the years and miss the group and their music. I had read somewhere Rick was warned multiple times about his smoking, drinking and drug abuse. I don't think he took the advice seriously.

The CCT scan would have shown him all the places in his heart was not receiving blood. Obviously there were four blood vessels that were clogged up. I’m not sure why they didn’t put stents in to him. They must have had their reasons. It was back in the 90’s so technology has moved on a bit. It would have been a huge wake up call, and I’m not sure Rick fully heard that call.

I just had a triple bypass 1.5 years ago. Stents were not an option due to the position of the blockages. Otherwise, they would have put them in. My arteries were glogged very badly. I could not even do 4 minutes on the treadmill. And only 54 years old.

@@pauljones9061 Quo got their big break when Roy Lynes was in the band. Yet no one is saying it's not the same without Roy. Get over it. The current band has been running longer than the original Quo and the frantic four.
