The correct answer to the question “How many guitars do I need?” Can be found in this simple equation: (Current number of guitars) + 1 = the number of guitars you need.

Happy 57 and a Half Birthday Rick! 🍰 I started playing in 1991...I’ve purchased 3 guitars & I’ve received 2 as gifts over the decades. 1992 Randy Rhoads Jackson Offset V (purchased) 2009 Les Paul Studio (purchased) 2012 Fender Jazzmaster (w Whammy bar) (purchased) 1978 Les Paul Standard (gift) 2018 Martin Acoustic/Electric OMC-15M (gift) I’ve always preferred sponsoring music classrooms so children can have guitars and other instruments as my “needs” were met long ago and I’ve chosen to defer my “wants” to fulfill children’s “needs.” I’d like to have many more guitars but I like children experiencing guitars more than adding to my collection. I’m not sure if I’m doing the right or wrong thing but it’s the path I’ve chosen that makes me happy; however, I LOVE seeing other musicians with crazy guitar inventories like Rick. How fun would it be to spend a day in Rick’s studio playing so many beautiful instruments!! 🤘😊🤘

I was trying to get a clean tone out of my strat, because I was just playing it and it was clean, now it was distorted; and there was this guy behind me ( this was outside) talking about a white lp custom, and how they age. I gave up on the strat, because I got hungry and got a sandwich, so I could listen to this guy and have a snack. Then I woke up and realized I was listening to youtube in my sleep. I just want you people to know that Rick still makes sense, and is quite compelling in many different realms. So, the next time you think he might be wandering and droning on and putting you to sleep, let him. You'll still learn something, and, enjoy it.

I just bought a Telecaster this week. I've bought and sold several over the years, this is a pretty nice one. So now for the first time I've got a Strat, Tele, and Les Paul all at once. I've also got a nice Taylor acoustic. I think I'm covered now. Except for something oddball like a Danelectro. But they're cheap. Maybe a Rickenbacker 12. They're not cheap, but I might need to do it. A Gretsch Duo Jet would be nice. And my Tele and Strat both have maple fingerboards, so I kind of need a Fender with a rosewood fingerboard. Or both. But that's it. Oh, except maybe a PRS, those things are SWEET!

have to say - I was a bit of a gear head before, especially when I was an audio engineer, collecting gear,. and even now I have too many guitars and basses and too many drums. BUT with age, I have gradually moved away from that and now the biggest fan I am of Tommy Emmanuel, who has essentially one guitar (which he plays to destruction usually) - and every note he plays comes from his heart and soul. its like he massages your heart with his fingers. no effects. no backline. no big production. no quantising. just a beat up guitar and his playing. Love it.
@arrakian

Rick, one of the best parts of your “What makes this record great” is that you have (or close to) versions of the equipment used in the songs. If that leaves you a gear head, oh well. 😊

You know, I found a way to make my G.A.S. more manageable. I try and find incredible deals, or at least have something to trade-in so I can bring the price down of the gear I want to acquire. I've set a price in my mind that is both reasonable and that does not put me into debt. If the gear I want is far out of my price range, then I do a ton of research to convince myself I don't need it. I check my budget, do the math. When I see that it is unreasonable, my mind tends to let go. This is how I counter the impulsivity. Another thing I do, is seek out more affordable alternatives. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience. Cheers

Sweet PRS. Really wish they put out more solid finishes on their core models. Apparently, one of the pillars of that company has been about producing instruments that get treated like paintings more than tools to _make_ those proverbial paintings. I’m glad to see more KZfaqrs break out of the gear addict mentality. Its encouraging for recovering gear junkies like me. When I realize I’ve worked to cut my stash of 14 instruments in half, it puts a smile on my face. Big weight off my shoulders. Lastly, it’s a beautiful thing how technology keeps evolving in a way that empowers guitarists and bassists to make better and better quality recordings at home. In the 90’s, there wasn’t a multitude of DAWs, sims, attenuators, IR’s, plugins etc, as we have available now.

For me the path from novice to pro is the path of: "Bang for the buck" to "Buck for the bang". From multipurpose to modular, and as a prosumer without a revenue stream - yes - choice paralysis is very real. Slowly weeding out the less than stellar parts of the signal path. Starts adding up when you start looking at power conditioning, sonic treatment, patch cables, good stands/hardware, maintenance, etc. only as good as the weakest link.

Thomas Blug has videos where he goes in a studio and captures the sound of all their expensive guitar amplifiers by making adjustments on his Amp 1 guitar amplifier with a nanotube. More so now that he has his Mercury edition. Most guitarists go beyond their guitar amplifier's sound with pedals anyway. Universal Audio has plug-ins to capture the sound of the major guitar amplifiers when recording.

I've thought about it too, but it's not a total waste. If you stay away from the cheap guitars (they just don't resell great; there are too many of them, and they're cheap enough that there's no reason to buy one used). I'm talking about the MIJ, some high-level Charvels, the upper-level stock Fenders, the 1970s and 1980s stuff! Stuff that sounds great. Affordable is different from cheap, in my opinion. I'm not saying you'll make a profit or even get your full money back, but you can pull some money out of a well-crafted guitar pile if you need to. Versus buying clothes, going out to restaurants, or buying expensive computer parts. At the end of the day, guitars have value because they're functional tools. My point is.. It's blowing money.. But it's not full on blowing money like gambling is blowing money. Ok.. I bought a blah blah guitar for $1800.. Chances are it's worth at least $1000 bucks in a pinch. Try that 15 years after you bought a computer? Unless your dealing with a collectable computer? haha.. Little excuse line of reasoning for all you married guys out there.

Great video, Rick. One thing I would say is this: For those of us in the real world, we don't get to expense gear on our tax return. One thing that makes me a bit jealous, is that as a studio owner, you probably get to depreciate (or section 179) your gear acquisitions. That means you get to buy items and take a tax break! Maybe I should start a studio on the side!!! Great vids, as always. Love your content.

An important aspect of GAS is the inspiration factor. I find that different guitars / amps / pedals inspire me to play “differently “ . Without getting too weird , there is definitely a spiritual side or “vibe” that some instruments have and you feel it as soon as you pick it up and start playing. I don’t feel it with all guitars ... maybe 1 in 50 that I tryout and even then it’s to different varying degrees but when you feel it .. you know it. I’ve sold several “vintage” guitars that just didn’t do it for me. All my current guitars give me that “inspired” feeling... each unique and inspiring in different ways. Don’t know if that makes sense to others but that’s my litmus test. How many guitars are enough ? The number I own now is enough... unless I run into one that inspires me. Then just one more .

I was just looking around my basement and I have 16 guitars including a double neck epiphone 12-6 , 2 bass, a banjo, and a sitar. Next to them are 3 guitar amps and a bass amp. I’m a surgical first assistant by trade, am a pretty crappy guitar player, and have no logical reason to own this many guitars outside of the fact that I like them. It becomes like hoarding at some point. At least Rick used these instruments and amps of his to make money.

@26:45 So many high gain amps are indistinguishable on a recording from each other. Especially with low tuned guitars. Even though I like a good high gain amp I find my gas is much more for different medium gain tones for guitars at A440 or a little lower. That’s where I hear the most differences. I definitely GAS a lot more for amps than I do guitars.

Every guitarist knows that the mathematical formula for how many guitars you need is N+1 where N equals the current number of guitars you own. Wsup Rick, you mentioned that you have arthritis in your fingers or something of that nature. There's a book called, "Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method", written by Aaron L. Mattes. The republished book is blue with two pictures on the cover with a year "2000" copyright. It really helped me keep my fingers healthy over the last decade. And I'm an Army Vet who's practiced boxing, wall handstands, and many things with my fingers and hands over the last 8 to 10 years. So I'd give it a try to see if it works for you. They still sale it online. So the exercises for for the fingers at least once a day for a while to see how that wotks for you. And it doesn't take long to do them. -Best of wishes bud Doulos

Let's face it- it's FUN to own a bunch of different guitars and amps, and for less than the cost of say, a Corvette or a small boat you can have a crapload of gear! I go along with the theory of having different gear available for different sounds, but if having 20 Strats lining your walls is what floats your boat, have at it. I've had to downsize lately, partly out of space considerations, and partly to fund studio gear but it's all good. ( although if I had it to do over, I would have kept the vintage Hi-Watt 50 watt. Selling that stung a little bit....ouch.)

After I got my Carvin, I couldn't believe that I had played anything else beforehand! The quality difference between a USA made, custom shop guitar and a Korean RG is remarkable... plus after hearing so many horror stories about Gibsons arriving exactly the way that one you ordered did! Makes me feel lucky that I've never been a fan of Gibsons lol I sold all my extra stuff and even stuff wasn't extra ... I do my own amp and guitar maintenance luckily... digital modeling is cool and all but it's not the same as the real tube amp tone and saturation with real celestions... nothing beats that for me personally

When you buy the new gear u need to learn how to use it. It's time consuming and best time investment is practise. So key is simplicity. A new instrument can make you want to play and practise more. It's easy for you to imagine you're using sth like Axe FX III, but if you're amateur and have just a few hours a day for your hobby then avoid complexity. Optimize for the minimum barriers between playing and creating music. This is my go to rule. If u see a new shiny thing and GAS kicks in, try to watch some tutorials and reviews of the stuff you already have and not yet fully mastered.

I'm 3/4 through this video about g.a.s., and Rick is currently discussing several different speaker emulators he owns. Now we're discussing a custom pedal that you can add before everything else... LMAO, Rick, leave the minimalist discussion to 5 watt world. I love that when you discuss a particular player or style, you have the specific style or gear in your hand. Gear is like partners. You just need the one, but if you want variety, and can keep them loved and properly maintained, who's to tell you how to live your life?!? Cheers, Rick!

In the past 2 months, I have swapped an old Univox P Bass copy for a Randall head and Kasino 8x10 cabinet. I have then bought a Fender 2x15 cabinet and am eyeing a Sunn Concert Bass head. I’m actually also helping my guitarist friend sell his Blackheart amp to buy a Marshall head for the Kasino cab in place of the Randall. I believe I maaaay have a problem.

I’ve had a few guitars over the years. I’ve not really had money for premium gear, especially for a hobby I never intended to become anything more, but I’ve found some quality budget instruments, and a few diamonds hiding in the rough. Due to life and job interference, I’m down to two guitars: an Alvarez RD8 (my original guitar that is sadly not in very good shape anymore and has become a sentimental display piece), and an Ibanez acoustic/electric I got for free from a coworker. There are three guitars I was forced to part ways with that I deeply regret losing: a Regal roundneck resonator, a gorgeous Epiphone Dot (the first brand new guitar I bought myself), and a surprisingly excellent playing and sounding Explorer style Arbor bass I got from Music-Go-Round for $75 with custom Hamer case.

I went through a bout of GAS for a while, but I stopped after my third bass. For many years I had just one bass. Then I bought a Squier Jaguar because it was cool, and then there was a Rickenbacker on sale, so I snapped it up. That was about 8 years ago. The Ric is my dream bass pretty much and my main player. Between the other two I can cover most bass tones. I love to look at basses but I don't feel the urge to spend money on any more. A fourth bass would just collect dust anyway.

It's weird. I was a purely acoustic guitar player for 16 years before I got into electrics too. I never bought and sold acoustics, I never truly GASsed over other acoustics and never wanted to change anything about them. But electrics? It's crazy how many I bought and sold, changed stuff, GASsed over guitars, ...
SHOULD I SELL MY GEAR?
