I will never understand why this band isn't shoulder to shoulder with AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in EVERY conversation... These guys are absurdly incredible

In the 90s when all these guys had new albums out , STP was consistently in my car's cd player. As a musician myself, their song structures spoke to me in a way the others didn't so much. Now that I'm older I can appreciate the complex nature of these songs and how my initial intuition was correct in liking STP over most others. I do remember STP getting a bad rap with some critics. AIC + STP were pretty much top 1st place tied for me. Everything else I could go either way. Siamese Dream too was a masterpiece. The 90s just had so many really good bands. Nirvana never quite clicked with me for some reason. They just seemed to whiny and too barre chordy basic bitch. I think the media propped them up more than they deserved IMO.

"Plush" is one of the best rock songs of the 90s. The way Scott sings over the chords is absolutely brilliant. In his prime Scott Weiland was one of the best rock vocalists of his generation. He had such emotional depth to his voice. His performances on "Creep," "Wicked Garden" and "Sex Type Thing" were also incredible. Stone Temple Pilots are rock royalty. 👍

Robert DeLeo is such a songwriting genius. And he's NEVER mentioned as such. He single-handedly wrote the bulk of STP's material (including 90% of their hits). Absolutely brilliant. As someone who couldn't write a song to save his frickin neck, I'm absolutely in awe of dudes like him.

Well I have a good story to tell and after I watched this it made me want to reach out to Robert. I loved and still love STP. I was living in Cleveland and was working at J Crew and in comes Robert. Some of my co-workers were making fun of Scott and his drug issues and Robert thought I was the person talking about him. He came up up me and looked like he wanted to kick my ass. He told me it wasn't right to make fun of someone and their problems. Then he came back about 20 minutes later and asked me if I was going to the show. I told him yes, and I did. I loved STP. Then he just said ok, and he walked away. I still feel very bad to this day he thought I was making fun of Scott.

Then in Creep admits to stealing forward Yesterday "I'm half the man I used to be" Some get sued for less but.... when you write that well the original owners bow to you.

The Carpenters reference is spot on. Listening to the inversions and voicings tells you you are hearing someone who listened to a lot of mid seventies pop rock radio. Robert did indeed "listen well."

The Scott Weiland era of STP is some of the best music ever written. Period. I was about 8 years old and in second grade when Core came out in 1992 and I've been listening to STP ever since. One of my all time favorite bands.

The DeLeo brothers are definitely one of the most underrated and overlooked musicians from the grunge era. Everybody shitted on STP for thinking they weren't worthy of being in the same conversation as the Big 4, but they definitely belong there. At the end of the day, just like Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots trascend so many genres it's kind of reductive to classify them as just "grunge".

Man I’m with you 100%, and both STP and Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite bands from the 90’s, by far. Both bands were doing such unique things and blending so many genres that I don’t think it was ever fair labeling them “grunge”. But with that being said, they definitely stand toe to toe with the big four, and in my humble opinion, are BETTER in many ways.

I really love grunge, but IMO, STP and AiC are much more than just grunge. For me, AiC is a hard rock band associated with the movement just because they shared the city and time, and STP is another hard rock band that we tend to associate with grunge because Scotts voice tessitura. Greetings.

I saw STP live and two things struck me (other than the obvious ‘Weiland is a star’ thing): Dean D has the best hard rock guitar sound I’ve ever heard live. And secondly, Robert D is an incredible bass player.

This STP album, in my opinion, is one of the hardest hitting, most badass rock albums of all time. EVERY song on the album just kicks major ass. Plush is one of my all time favorite songs ever and one that I play as a warm up when practicing guitar.

I equate Dean to Alan Holdsworth. If you don't know Alan take that dive... I did with Tony Williams Lifetime Proto Cosmos. transcribed the solo for my Transcription and analysis class in music school. It destroyed me trying to play it and I quit school. and music completely.... only writing songs until Freebeer came along.

Amazing conversation. Count me among the folks for whom Purple is a desert island record. I love its dark tone, the mix of psychedelically wide and claustrophobically tight spaces, hammering grooves and wide variety of tempos, the random sprinkles of exotic textures... they just took so many risks and it all works for me on every level, I'm grateful to have it in my collection.

STP was truly the quintessential rock band for the 90’s if we are talking rock following the traditional formula of classic rock artists. It’s almost as if they were so smooth that people overlooked their talent. Not a band that has one or two hits and 10 filler songs on the record. They had an incredible sense of melody and structure. In their defense a lot of critics were admittedly too harsh to them originally.

Just like the first time I heard Boston, Radiohead, or Nirvana, STP's Plush had the same effect of suddenly galvanizing one's attention to the experience of the manifestation of sound in space. Great song!

They *hated* playing that song already by the time they finished their European tour in 1993, or at least that is what they claimed back then. Dean and Robert said that every night when they would play the first few bars they would look across the stage at one another and roll their eyes because they hated that song so much. ...and Eric was "over" finding a bottle of Dom Perignon in his hotel suites (this was at the Paramount Hotel in NYC when they were there to rehearse for the SNL performance). Robert seems a little less jaded and over it compared to 30 years ago, and he's a lot more handsome now then he was then. He was aged very well. It's good to see him not hating playing music.

I had the pleasure and good fortune to see the original lineup of STP a year before Scott passed away. It is a cherished memory, and STP will always hold a special place in my heart. Simply one of those rare, killer bands that made music not just in passing, but songs that you would attach memories, events, and emotions to.

I'm old enough to remember that a lot of people described STP as Pearl Jam wannabes. Through the years, people have come to realize that just isn't true. I actually think STP are the better band, but doesn't have the same discography volume.

I'm one of those people. I was (am) a metal head and thought all that grunge was being overhyped like crazy by MTV at that time. Later on I came to appreciate a lot of the grunge musicians and Pearl Jam isn't even in my top three.

I like PJ but STP are the better musicians and songwriters. More on the level of AIC and Soundgarden I’d say.
