From a 67 year old drummer I have to compliment your amazing level of skills and most importantly your finesse.. Young drummers take note and realize what you are being offered here.. it is priceless!

I have the Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit which I think, is what your kit evolved into. I've owned many different sizes, brands and models of kits, none of which have sounded as good as my current "economy" mahogany shell kit. Other than the 30-degree bearing edges, I don't know how Gretsch can get this amazing ("Great Gretsch Sound") sound from this kit. Again, your demonstration with full explanations are amazing and very understandable. It's so nice to see and hear a professional drummer on KZfaq who actually knows what he is doing without trying to impress anyone. Keep doing what you're doing! My gigs are almost all small, soft venues.

-" the 12" is not good for brushes"-... then immediately proceeds to make it sound amazing!.. Love your playing, love your gear, love your videos. I've been doing this since 1983 and you still give me moments where my eyes just pop open. Thank you for that!

Amazing sound and playing! I do find it funny when people are amazed with the Catalina series or cheaper wood drums. Back in the day, makers never really marketed the wood used in the shells. You may as well market the glue used to hold the plies together. Anyway, again excellent video. Thanks for posting.

Excellent, I have the Gretsch Catalina new design ,7 ply mahogany 12 ,14,18 w 5x14 snare they sound exactly like these. Great cymbal set as well Rick. The sound might be due to 30deg. bearing edge.

Likewise; after owning many sizes and brands since the 1960's, I have finally settled on my Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Round Badge model with mahogany shells and the famous 30-degree bearing edges. For the very low price, I am amazed at the great sound which can be extremely quiet and extremely loud. The 5-lug 12" tom has an amazing depth of sound. In addition, after buying and playing many different combinations of cymbals I have settle on Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride, K Custom Dark Hi Hats and a K Dark Thin Crash. For me - no for everyone - this is the best combination for small venues. Of course, heads and sticks can make a world of difference. Rick Dior rules. I wish I had a "Way Back Machine" so I could go back in time and bring my younger self to the present so I could learn from you. You are the best!

I've a 16" made in Japan kid's bass drum in white marine pearl from the 60s. Wood hoops with inlays, single tension. It's made of cheap firewood, but it sounds really nice! Looks cool too. Those Gretsches are cool!

Pearl Omar Hakim 5x13 snare works well. All African mahogany, high quality, and affordable.
@rickdior
@rickdior 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, That's a really nice drum.... but loud. African Mahogany is much harder than the Philippine version. Philippine Mahogany has softwood properties and I think that's what contributes to to it's mellow quiet sound.

Hi Rick! Great playing and sound! I just picked up a kit like that with the 16” bass drum, 8 and 10” toms and 13x13 floor tom and the 12” snare! I plan to use them on quieter gigs!! Killer playing!! I was told they are from 2010 or so but the version with the 16” is rare!

Thanks The thing I like about this kit are the larger toms, 12" and 14". Thats what makes the kit feel full size. I was told this kit is from the 1990's.

The little kits are a lot of fun to play. This one sounding great. Very usable, especially with what seems to be an increasing number of smaller venue, acoustic, unplugged gigs. I don't know about the miking for this video but what heads were used on the 16" BD. I'm assuming no muffling. Btw, you worked the 12" SD very nicely with brushes. No snagging on the rims.

Hi. I've tried to imitate your cymbals setup but those hi hats are very difficult to come by. Especially shipped to my country. There's a set of City Pack w/ 12" New Beat HH and 18" (re-issued I believed) Ride similar to yours. What's your opinion on 12" New Beat would it be great for a "Quite" kit. Thank you.

Those cymbals sound great! I've owned a few flat rides. None of them sounded as good as those when crashed. I've been wanting to try Dream's flat earth ride. Big fan of small kits too. They do sound a bit quieter but I think I'm going to have to stick to mesh heads and Sabian cheese grater cymbals until I build a shed.

I'm sure playing softly made it hard to relax and groove. Keep your pattens basic with a "loose" grip on the "sticks". Try Regal Tip Blasticks or wire brushes. A tympani mallet on the snare with a Blastick on the cymbals will fatten up the backbeat without loudness. Also, don't bury the beater on the kick. The fuller sound will feel bigger.
