Here is a video that demonstrates how I use triplets to develop hand technique, coordination and soloing. I this first part I show you how to interpret triplet rhythms from straight 16th note rhythms. I use pages from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion for source material. The book is available from me at rickdior@gmail.com
I use single strokes and then double stroke stickings to play these exercises.
Part 2 will begin the application to drum set of these ideas.

This vid is a real treasure man ... your interpretation of 16th note rhythms with 16th triples and the 4 stickings Rll, Lrr, rrL, llR really is da stuff of jazz soloing & fills. As you say, if you got those reflexes, nothing's gonna mess you up doing big band charts. Is there a part 2 to this, and one that demos application to fills on big band charts? Thanks man ... great channel! You're a master! High quality stuff!

Hey Rick, Happy Holidays. I wondered if you have any insight on the left hand traditional grip 16th notes thing that the Bayonne Bridgemen used to do back in the day. Buddy used to do that sort of thing too and it's always alluded me. Thanks for all the great videos!

Hi Not sure exactly what you are asking but I think it is the left hand alternating finger thing. We used to practice that with our hands turned over.

@@rickdior I guess I'm not sure exactly which fingers to use/alternate. I'm sure the thumb has some work to do as well. Love your videos and thank you so much!

Hi Rick, Does this mean the 2nd and 5th are not used. ? 16th triplets: 1 2 3 4 5 6
@rickdior
@rickdior 3 жыл бұрын
That is correct. For those notes use straight written out triplet rhythms like the ones in my book.

rick - thanks so much for another great video. Just wondering if you can explain the similarity vs difference of these types of 16th note triplet exercises to those in syncopatio where the syncopation pages written as 8th notes can be interpreted as 16th notes (eg, 2 bars of the 8ths =1 bar of 16ths). It seems that it is very similar excepting that your rhythms are separated by 1 and 2 note groupings, whereas the ted reed 37 - 46 have more consecutive accented notes in the rhythms. Cam the benefit of these exercises be obtained therefore from the reed rhythms or any other rhythmic patterns? thanks again and great stuff amd for three camps, i am working my way through it.

You can use any book for this. The Reed book is just 8th notes which work as well. The idea is to have as much reading material as possible and being able to use the vast amount of 16th note rhythms in many books adds to this. In my book there are 3 note groupings as well. Also one bar of 16th notes will equal 2 bars of 8th notes.
