Imagine being so rich that in the future their are now thousands of tourists visiting your place each day, out front just standing there staring and admiring on this structure you once lived in that is now considered a work of art, but during your residency that exact same structure was simply called the front foyer.

Buckingham Palace wasn't built by an absoutle monarchy. Why does France have these grand palaces? Because they had absoutle monarchies at the time when the grander styles arrived in Europe. England was done with absoutle monarchies when this was being built. Parliament were in control. Buckingham Palace was originally a Manor House and then converted into a palace by King George IV, who never had this sort of power. There was simply no need for a British king or queen to live like this because they didn't need to show off their unchallenged power. They had to get money from Parliament at this point and Parliament never really gave British kings or queens that much money. In fact, British monarchs at this point weren't that wealthy compared to their European counterparts because Britain became a Constitutional Monarchy before a lot of other European nations. If Britain was an absolute monachry when they had their power and glory they could've easily built something like this but 10x larger and grander- but they never needed to when they were the superpower in Europe.

This comment thread is silly when you consider the truth that all empires and luxurious palaces are just vestiges of oppressive, unjust States that used their power to crush common folks. There is no inherent greatness in structures and symbols that reflect imperial authoritarianism. You can marvel at the artistic value of it or at the sense of history that it evokes. But you can never be proud of symbols of tyranny, suppression and authoritarianism.

The residence of the most powerful man on Earth. The biggest and richest palace. Probably the closest to a Paradise on earth that humans ever got.

the palace of Versailles is an amazing place to visit! the rooms are so colorfully decorated with every inch of art and sculptures. the palace will take most of your day to see because it is that huge. the line to wait to get inside was very long, but if you come in February like I did, the lines will go by fast. must see the hall of mirrors, was my favorite room, and loved the queens bedroom. it looked so royal and elegant. definitely worth the trip

Just went there today! Get the passport with a designated time on it to skip the lines. Well worth the extra 7 Euro. While the palace is absolutely beautiful, do make time to explore the gardens as well. It is unbelievable how huge they are. Also the Trianon and other buildings are worth their own visit. This place is utter beauty from end to end. Also the surrounding town is a joy to wander about too. Could not have been happier with this visit.

At the time of Louis XIV, the royal garden was part of a royal park four times larger than the current gardens (1977 acres today against nearly 8000 acres). It was surrounded by a forest. Louis XIV, like most French monarchs, loved hunting.

I went to Versailles last year and immediately went to the Hall of Mirrors you know I have this eerie feeling that the Louises and their servants and courtiers were watching me as I walked along the room. Then I raised my middle finger and said "ha! we commoners can enter your residence now!" T'was a satisfying yet eerie experience. But the room that has the most negative aura was Marie Antoinette's. I dunno but I felt uneasy when I entered her room, like I felt fear which was probably what she felt during the revolution.

Well, from gossips i heard, Napoleon resided in versailles and his wife slept in the queen’s bedroom and all she had was nightmares and she felt her presence was haunting this room and she asked not to be in the palace again, which is why they left versailles and stayed in the grand trianon. Its said versailles is haunted with Louis XVI and Antoinette’s ghosts and i even heard at night they see her carriage enter the palace. Interesting gossips tho lol i want them to be real for somereason.

Comparing the times, Louis XV was even more powerful than Queen Victoria. The most powerful king of all European history ..
@EarthChampion_TophBeifong
@EarthChampion_TophBeifong 5 жыл бұрын
Well, you're right, comparing the Kings, he was more powerful. He was the state. Victoria's empire was far less ruled be herself and instead ruled by "her" government, the parliament and the prime minister. But comparing Empires, Victoria's was probably the most powerful empire the world had ever seen and probably ever see again. If you would compare actual absolute monarchs, the empress Catherine the Great of Russia is a more suited contestant vs the Sun King.

Queen Victoria was a constitutional monarch while King Louis XV was an absoutle monarch in two completely different centuries. King Louis XV literally saw himself as a God and built this palace so grandly to show that off and the fact he was unchallenged. Here Louis XV was in complete control, while Queen Victoria wasn't, her Parliament was. And Victoria had an entire historic age named after her and no one can question she ruled a very large and very powerful empire. Queen Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen) is more comparable to him.

All Europe countries at one time or another had their rise and fall. France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, England etc... also the great empire of Russia, the empire of China, Japan etc.. nobody likes to be ruled by an all powerful king, emperor, dictator, general and soon or later revolutions take place. Yes the Palace of Versailles is beautiful but only a handful of people could enjoy it... two generations of kings later the revolution took place and it was the beginning of the end with royalty in France.

That’s because most Europeans have seen places like this. I live in Amsterdam and I pass by the Royal Palace everyday and lost count how many times I’ve been inside that place. Most Europeans who can afford it will go to places outside of Europe. The history and traditions of Europe are still so heavily integrated in the the Europe of today that palaces like this are a lot less special to us than they are to people who have never seen something like it.

Louis probably never said "L'Etat c'est moi' (there is no record of it anywhere). But he said on his dying bed: "I am going away, but the State will always remain". He didn't identify himself - as a man - to the State, but his function, or what he would often call "le métier du Roi" ("the profession of kingship").
