Rick Steves' Europe

Rick Steves' Europe

Күн бұрын

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | From the port of Kuşadası, we wander the streets of ancient Ephesus, soak in a natural spa at Pamukkale, learn why the dervishes whirl at Konya, munch lunch in a Turkish pizzeria, and cruise the Mediterranean on a traditional Turkish gulet from Antalya. Turkey is a mighty nation whose ancient heritage, Muslim faith, and western ways are coming together...and we’ll see how. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #turkey

What I like about Rick Steve is that he is so positive about the people and places he presents. At a time when we're all becoming very suspicious or each other, Rick still shows us as common people, with hospitality towards visitors, pride in our customs, and more in common than differences. Thanks Rick.

I taveled half of Europe from Bulgaria to Norway and i can say that i have found lots of people like him who are so positive about cultures and people in general. More you travel, more you open-minded. We are not so different from each other even if we are living in different places, eat different foods and believe in different Gods. We al are human at the end.

I've met and known many Turks who had Albanian, Bosnian or Georgian ancestry (which explains some of the more European or Caucasus looks), and I even knew one who Arabic and looked completely Arabic, but only knew and spoke Turkish. Looking back even farther, the Turkic tribes from the steppes merely conquered (and mixed) with a pre-existing population that already had a mix of Greek, Phyrgian, Hittite, Armenian, Galatian (Celtic), and Medean (Kurdish) strains.

Your city is beautiful! I've travelled in Turkey extensively, but never to Izmir...until last June. I loved it and kicked myself that I hadn't visited earlier. I liked the Agora, Alsancak, Kordon, Karatas and the Asansor, Kemeralti, Kadifekale, Karsiyaka, and of course the side-trip to Efes ve Selcuk. I only had six days exploring Izmir and it wasn't nearly enough. I've been to other regions of Turkiye (Trakya, Konya region, northeast, Bursa, Istanbul), but just something about the Ege pace of living, worldview, cuisine and history really gets me.

I spent a semester as an international student in Konya. It was my first time in Turkey and really allowed me to experience this side of Turkiye outside the tourist areas. It was definitely more "conservative", although there were some areas of the city not quite as much....After this, I got to know Istanbul in depth (including staying there three months in 2015). This last June (2017), I stopped over in Turkey again while on a trip to Avrupa, and this time visited Izmir. Its a shame Rick didn't show much of this beautiful city. I spent a week there (including a side-trip to Selcuk and Efes) and was astounded at the sites, stories and especially the Ege pace of life.

7:21 referred to as a Roman city. But Ephesos was not a Roman city. Was a Greek city . In the first century after Christ was inhabited by 250.000 Greeks with Roman citizenship, and Apostle Paul said his sermon and wrote the letter to the Ephesians in Greek.

Ephesos was an ancient Greek city and It was built in the 10th century BC by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists. During the Classical Greek era it was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. The city came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC....It was not a Roman city!

Western Turkey reminds me of so much like GREECE especially the ruins and the Mediterranean Sea and everything about it except the flags and women wearing the head things .... I also liked when he kept saying Roman everything when obviously it is made by the Greeks and the letters on the Ancient Ruins were of course in Greek and the architecture too!!!!!!!

Seeing all these greek alphabet on these ancient ruins make me feel sorry for the destroyed culture and language of Anatolians. Lidyans, the inventors of currency, Hittites, Carians, Isaurians and many more... All of them got destroyed and Hellenized by Greeks.

I had the great pleasure of going to Turkey last November for three weeks and yes, we went to Ephesus. In Kusadasi, I remember being alone on the Main Street in the late afternoon and looking around on the way back to the hotel. I had the MOST DELIGHTFUL three hours talking to four backgammon players in front of a jewelry shop. A little flirting but we were all old (50+) and knew it was all in best. I would go back to Turkey if i could. Oh, and Konya... a dream come true to sit next to Mevlana’s (Rumi’s) tomb for an hour with the believers. So many wonderful memories. Thanks to Rick Steves for the review.
