I think he primarily meant no worry about getting sick and dying suffering (e.g. cancer), not so much dying by external force, although you could extend that thought experiment that way.

And that's the main reason why I don't cry over people who commit suicide. They got to choose how they die. The rest of us don't get that luxury, and even fewer still of us die "peacefully in our sleep". Odds are, you're going to die in some horrible way that you never could possibly have imagined would happen to you, and you'll never see it coming...

Every time Stephen interviews Ricky there's this weird vibe like Stephen finds his atheism unacceptable. Catholicism is a big part of Stephen's life and his worldview hinges on an afterlife existing.
