I get asked this all the time...which beginner guitars do I recommend?
Electric: Yamaha Pacifica. The most versatile electric guitar for the beginner and beyond. they do rock, blues, jazz and metal and anything else you can think of! I LOVE them!
amzn.to/3gecQ8R
Acoustic: Cort AF510 - These have a folk sized body, which is a smaller sized body better for lady chests, and donut bellies. I've sold lots of these guitars to students and they're impressively well put together. I always have a bunch in when I teach my live guitar classes at my music school.

Thanks Mate!

I used to play out professionally, never knowing a damn thing about the instrument. Several years ago, in an attempt to expunge all of my acquired bad habits, I put the guitars down. The time has come to begin anew, hopefully having lost most of the muscle memory and mental blocks from before. I am beginning with theory, before even picking the instruments up again. I just happened on this video Ricky. I will not be looking any further for support materials for mastering the fretboard for quite some time, maybe never again! Take this revelation, add in discipline and you have a formula for success. You have unlocked a door for me my friend and I wanted to publicly thank you for that. This is quite possibly the single best little nugget of instruction one could ever hope to receive. Well done. Thank You again.

Hi Robert. Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to write them. KZfaq is amazing isn't it?! Sure, I get some really daft and weird comments but comments which can make you doubt yourself and the notion of doing a KZfaq channel. However, comments like yours REALLY MAKE MY DAY. It spurs me on to make more videos. I LOVE teaching guitar and to be able to share it with like-minded people regardless of what country they are in still astounds me. Thank you again, my friend. Finally, someone who will talk to me like I’m an 8 year old while teaching guitar! Sometimes my brain just needs time and repition to absorb a concept, because it’s in overdrive on account of ignorance/confusion crushing any reason. Too many teachers will go: 1, 2 (ok, got it), skip a few (wait, what?), 99, 100 (oook, nevermind).

My Method: I just learned the E and the A String. The D String is the E String, just 2 Freds higher. The G Tring is the A String, just 2 Freds higher. And the B String is the A String just 2 Freds lower. But your video is also very usefull :) I´m looking forward to also learn your method. Greetings from germany!

@MOAB-UT 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe I am not following you. Mabye it's just your wording but it seems like you have it backwards. D is lower than E e.g., (D D#/Eb E.) G is also lower than A in the same manner. Lastly, B is higher than A.
@TingleTangleJones
@TingleTangleJones 3 жыл бұрын
@@MOAB-UT D is lower than E. Thats right but what i mean is finding the same note. E on E string is just playing it open. (0 fred). To find the E on the D string is just moving 2 freds up. So for me its higher because i have to move higher on the fred Board. But maybe its just my wording. English is my second language. :) greetings

@@TingleTangleJones I get what you mean now. Looking at it relative to the open string what you say makes sense. I figured it was something like that. I was thinking in terms of tone- you were referencing physical location. I guess what matters most is how it sounds! Cheers!

Excellent explanation Ricky - clear and concise. I've been playing guitar for over 60 years and I've got away with not knowing the notes I've been playing throughout this time. My musical tastes have changed and, instead of Chuck Berry etc. with a bass player and a drummer, I now play Celtic melodies with fiddle, pipe and accordion players. This means I have to learn to read music notation to keep up with my talented fellow musicians! Before I can do that, I have to learn the fretboard. This has helped enormously and yes, I learned it in (less than) a day. Thanks Ricky.

My OCD tells me there would be 1 egg left in the egg box...What are you doing to me Scott? The reason I use Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father is it's the order of the flats in the flat key signatures. I just noticed that this video is over 4 years old, so I'm hope I'm not too late to the party. I'm at the earliest stages of my journey and determined to learn the fretboard early on, although its 2D array makes that trickier than a keyboard's 1D arrangement. In that pursuit, I've looked at a *lot* of resources for tips, tricks and hacks and this is by *far* the most helpful one I've come across. While none of the information is exactly new or groundbreaking for me, the way it's integrated has given me hope. As you mentioned at around the 9:00 mark, I got the E string layouts rather quickly and 'A' is coming along, but the prospect of the other three and keeping it all straight has been a bit daunting. Thank you so much for this trail of bread crumbs!

I like any approach that helps identifies relationships between notes on different strings. Like the difference of a fourth between adjacent notes on strings 3, 4, 5 & 6. I also think of the relationship between the notes on the same fret for strings 1 and 3 as that of a minor third. Very useful for chords and fills. In addition to the open strings, everyone should know all the notes on the 6th string for power chords or barre chords. And the 1st is obviously identical to the 6th and everything repeats at the 12 fret. So out of 72 notes, there's probably only around 40 that people struggle with. Another approach is to keep a tuner on your headstock and play a game to find every C on the fretboard, then every F# and so on. After a while you can see the patterns.

This was the way I figured it out for myself too, but I took it one step further: that cycle, if you don't do the 1-fret offset when it repeats at B, is actually: B-E-A-D-G-C-F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb ... and then that whole loop repeats. It's the same thing shown in this video, except you repeat BEADG as flats at the end of the sequence (so I think of it as BEADGCF BEADG, and just remember the last BEADG are all flats). I remember it "Bead Juicy Funk" (BEAD, GC=Juicy, F=Funk). Anyway, there's many different ways to look at it and remember it; the important thing is whatever makes sense to YOU! This trick is great for finding your way around at first, but really you should use it to eventually learn the location of every natural note without having to think about it at all :)

I have watched many videos on this topic. All of them taught by people who clearly know what they’re talking about. I’m not bashing them at all, but as is this case when trying to learn anything, you eventually find someone or some thing that explains it in such a way that it all clicks. This gentleman has given me that click. I feel like I now have a solid base from which I may be able to finally get this once and for all. Thank you sir.

Here are the 5 steps to learn the Notes on a Guitar: 1) Memorize the 6th string Natural Notes (EF G A BC D E). 2) Memorize "BEAD GCF." 3) As you are going up the strings, when you hit the 2nd string, move 1 fret up. 4) As you are going up the strings, at the end of F (on BEAD GCF), move 1 fret up. 5) This pattern only applies between 0-10 fret and 12-22 fret.

This has been profoundly helpful for me. Thank you so much for this video! I wrote out the "rules" for this note-placement method. Perhaps others would find them helpful, as well. If I've gotten this wrong, please point it out, and I'll edit it. B-E-A-D-G-C-F BEADGCF is the order of flats (reverse it for the order of sharps).
A great mnemonic for this is “Battle Ends, And Down Goes Charles’ Father.”
It’s also a great way to map out the notes on a guitar fretboard. Each letter corresponds with its same-named note on the fretboard. The basic idea is to spell out B-E-A-D-G-C-F on a given set of 2 neighboring frets, moving from the thickest (6th string, the one closest to your body) to the thinnest (1st string, the one closest to the floor). Here are the rules to follow to make sure you get the notes placed properly.
 Be certain to take careful note of the ***, which applies to the ever-pesky "B" string. 1. Begin on the “B” note of your choice. In this example, let’s pick the “b” that you’ll find on the thickest (6th) string at fret 7. 2. To place the next note in the series, “E” for “Ends” in this case, move to the next thinnest string on the same fret*** 3. Carry on in like fashion, placing each of the letters in the order of the mnemonic, moving to the next thinnest string on the same fret for each, successive letter*** 4. When you reach the thinnest string and you’re in the middle of the mnemonic, start again on the same fret, beginning with a repeat of the last note you just placed on that thinnest string. For example, if the last letter in the mnemonic on the thinnest string was “C” on fret 8, you repeat the “C” on the thickest (sixth) string on fret 8, and carry on with the mnemonic as usual. In this case, that would be “F” for “father” on fret 8. 5. When you’ve reached the end of your phrase (i.e., “F” for “Father”), to find your next “B,” place it one fret down towards the body of the guitar on the next-thinnest string. 6. ***When placing your note on the “B” string (the second thinnest), move down one fret toward the body of the guitar and carry on as usual

This is AWESOME. Every other video "teaches" you to learn the fretboard simply by counting the notes on each string one by one from the nut. This actually shows the relationship / pattern of the notes ACROSS the fretboard. Now I feel confident that I can find the strings that are near / adjacent to the note I'm playing, instead of just the note before or after on the same string. Genius!

So I was gonna mesmerize the notes vertical down the odd frets but I saw pattern. Went and got my circle of fifths diagram. I learned the order of flats and sharps before so I saw the BEADGCF everywhere but a pattern. Now watching this video it all made sense and now see or visualize my fretboard so much better now. Everything is a pattern on the guitar u just have someone like you to point it out. Thank you and u got a new subscriber.
