Making Music With My Own Samples.. So Sick!

Let's create a track with NO SAMPLES other than the ones I make on the spot, and then resample them. I find this to be a fun approach to making music, as well as an effective way to camouflage my mediocre piano skills, haha! I can play chords I like at any tempo and then slice and chop them up on the Octatrack. Next to getting some organic tones from the Nord 6D, I wanted to layer them with the rigid, robotic, digital sounds from my minimal Eurorack setup. I used Osiris as my voice of choice, and the Maestro to modulate the wavetable, resulting in some intriguing textures.

Also, the reason why there can be a bit of a grind in the melody is because the G min chord is a G minor 9, which means it's either from the key of F or the key of Bb. The A minor chord either comes from the key of C or G, which has a B natural in it. So if the chord playing is the Aminor9 the way you played it with the B natural in the middle of the voicing, then using a Bb like from the G minor chord preceding it conflicts melodically/harmonically. So it's possible to play that B natural during the A minor and it sounds really cool because of the contrast with the G minor and D minor chords. The D minor is flexible. Either B or Bb would technically work, but both are a 6th degree from D so they're both really strong intervals.

I sort of stumbled upon the the idea of creating original tracks to serve as base to create samples from ac outlet of months ago on the channel of Alex Ball. It made sense to me instantly on many levels, and so I find it fascinating to run into another take on that subject (sort of) over here. Which is nice - and highly appreciated! :-)

I sometimes re-watch some of your older videos, and it is just amazing to see how far you've come. Definitely inspiring. I don't have all of the tools you have, but it's really inspiring how you've gone from that first Compact Creation with the Drumbrute and the Monostation (where the Monostation was barely audible due to mixing issues, remember?) to this jazz workout. Love!

Loving all your "house track rom scratch" content mate. I hope you get Dirtywave M8 a try someday. I'm coming from the Elektron ecosystem and I was surprised to see that it's the perfect "house device" for me, hence it's my "main gear" now (that I can literally take anywhere). For the past couple on months, I usually compose on M8, and eventually I'll be using Octatrack & Analog Heat+FX to "perform a live set", as sort of a "more fun" way to DJ with a easy to carry, minimal setup.

It’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content. I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak. I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds. When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap. I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power. In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with. What would be your suggestion? Thank you!

Great work, I always look fwd to your videos as I always catch some new little trick. A bit of a fun fact - I know you said you saw this from the maestro Jon Wayne (a big fan), but this technique is quite old - I saw it in a old Miles Davis documentary. He was the pioneer ofcit, with his batch of electric releases, and he done it in a way to sample everyone jamming on their instrument for 30 mins, and later on cut the tapes of each instrument into small portions and re-arrange it to a 5 min track! I love using it with looper on Isla S2400 and later sequence via Digitakt Midi :)

15:59 It seems that the chords that you use are from the d minor scale. The first time you played the melody that sounded "wrong", you played the B, which is not part of the D minor scale. The second time you automatically corrected yourself to playing Bd! But when you play the A chord, you can play the B to extend the chord (as you did when recording the chords), because the B is harmonically supported by the other notes from the chord. But what also could be the case, is that after the chopping and sampling and everything, maybe this part of the song is leaning on the g minor sound, which is part of the d minor scale. And if you play a B at that point, you create a g major sound, which clashes with the g minor! Still trying to wrap my head around these things! Thank you for sharing this session of trial, error, and creation ❤

Sample chopping your own melody helps a lot. I just go hip to Jon make beats about a week ago if that. He’s sick, you guys make me want the octatrak more. So with a DT and a OT you can have them linked and record independently? Can I do that with a DT and a Live2? And will the midi control devices under the DT and OT act independent like the recording process? If the live 2 can’t work with the DT like that I might have to get that damn OT.

Of course, the notes A,G,D do not make up a 'complete' chord. Especially not a triad chord as your G and A are only a interval apart. At best, what you 'claim' to have (though you did not say 9th) here is a G maj. 9th chord without the 3rd or 7th of the proper 7th chord G,B,D,F (A is the 9th). I can't tell if your 'acting' as though you know what you did on the keyboard, with a sort of sarcastic humor regarding 'music theory'. That, or if you're just trying to 'fake' that you do -which you clearly do not.
