@@n.e.e.n.official6639 There were many situations in which Gillen was sounding too strident and half-toning the notes, his technique was never perfect like Dio's, watch Ronnie's performances with Black Sabbath in Ottawa 1982, in Toronto 1982 and with his solo band in Manchester in 1983, Gillen has a simpler singing style and without the variation of melodic designs and that fabulous spectrum of vocal color effects that Dio had through intonation manipulation (Dio was always a master in vocal manipulation), Gillen never had much discipline in the high notes and many times, even though he had an excellent technique, good control of his natural treble and great harmonic resonance in his live performances, in some cases he sounded too strident or with his voice even squeezed at times on very high notes far from the open throat singing and highly controlled free notes with very open vowels in the upper fifth octave as Ronnie had, Gillen could hardly belt notes above B4 with an extremely full-bodied, balanced vibrato with the same naturalness as Dio, he did not had perfect muscular control of the vocal mechanism and just like an operatic rock voice like Ronnie had, Dio could to execute those harmonic throat distortions with perfect control and without any muscular tension and effort, Dio is considered an absolutely virtuoso singer by many singing experts that I have access to (as I have in-depth knowledge of vocal anatomy and physiology, and know many great professionals in the field and have also partly studied the vocal material of many rock/metal singers); Gillen in my opinion was one of the best rock singers but at the same time he was underrated as a singer but he was not an extremely virtuoso singer in terms of technical ability and consistency in live performances like Ronnie James Dio; Just study deeply the Anatomy of the muscular structure of the vocal mechanism of both singers and I am sure that any specialist with formal knowledge of musical theory could reach the same conclusions.

all the singers hired were a treasure. would have been interesting to have had more works by sabbath with these and more vocalists. Hail the Heavy.

Have always been a huge fan of Ray Gillan absolutely one of the best singers period but hearing him do the Dio stuff gave me chills my God you close your eyes on children of the sea and you would think it was Ronnie himself, brilliant.

I was at the show just before this in Portland Maine. Ray nailed all genres of Sabbath effortlessly and it was an awesome show.

I loved Ray's voice and it was a tragedy to lose him so young. I actually own the Eternal Idol w/Ray on vocals and of course the original

Ray is one of my favorite singers of all time. Of any of my favorite vocalists, he's the one I'd like to be able to emulate the most. Strong and great tone. Fucking beast on the pipes!

For most singers, the band often times has to lower the key of songs so the singer can sing the tune live. For Symptom of the Universe here the band actually raises the key of the song for Ray!
@MrLtia12342 жыл бұрын
Although he doesn't actually sing it! (Other than a single 'yeah'). But yeah, it's a whole tone sharp of the original- up to F#. Strangely, on the NSD tour, Ozzy was forced to sing it even higher in G!

Ray was amazing live, and Tony Martin was amazing in the studio. Great choices, both.

Tony Martin rocked live, too. Try listening to TYR promo tours or anything before 1994 (I guess he damaged his voice touring while having flu....) But he COULD sing live! (For example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrKheZeDtN6ueZc.html )
