I've been shooting with the Ricoh GR III for the past few months and I can say there's a lot to love about this little camera! But is it the new king of street photography cameras? My Ricoh GR III street photography review has the answer! Hint: YES IT IS!
The Ricoh GR3’s small form factor and matte black magnesium alloy body are super stealthy and the snap focus mode makes shooting on the street a breeze. The newly designed 18.3 mm f2.8 lens and 24 megapixel APS-C sensor combine for amazing image quality that definitely has its own signature look.
It's easy to see why so many street photographers love this camera!

Thanks for your review. Keep in mind the GR’s battery is the size of a CF card. This makes storage of extras easy. I use pelican’s water tight case. It holds 3 and fits nicely in a pocket.
@karledwards
@karledwards 4 жыл бұрын
Good point... But by the same logic, 2 of the current GR III batteries would be about the same size as a battery with twice the capacity. And this larger battery would eliminate the need to change the battery so often! Like I said in my review - the GR3 battery life sucks but this doesn't change my view of this excellent little camera. :)

Is it possible to lock controls on the GRiii while shooting. Specifically the ADJ/EV Compensation Lever and the Control Dial? I am shooting in manual mode, from the hip, and find the shutter speed and exposure compensation change because the controls rub against the body? Thanks.

Watched this vid. Bought a GR. Don’t know if I will like it. The hurdle I have to overcome is the FOV. Like 50 and 35 is OK. I’m afraid 28 is going to be too wide. I really don’t want to get THAT close. I will try and see if I can deal with this. No flash? No problem. I’m a natural light photographer. LOVE that there is IBIS. Snap focus seems like a good idea and one of the features GR users rave about. LOVE the high contrast B&W film mode. Will play with the highlight saving mode. May or may not be a feature I will use. Of course, the pocketabilty is a major feature. Pants vs. a jacket pocket. I live in Seattle so I’m wearing a jacket nice months a year. You know what I mean. Want to love this cam. If not, I’ll stay with my 100 S or T. Also just bought an XPRO3. I know, a different animal. Just go out and shoot. Mask on Nurse Marty

One of the first things I did after buying the GR3 was to superglue that adapter ring around the lens on. I have no intention of buying the adapter lens. That ring comes off too easily so my solution was to glue it on.
@karledwards
@karledwards 4 жыл бұрын
OMG! The loose ring is definitely a design flaw with this camera... I lost that ring the first week I had the camera and had to pick up a blue one as the black ones were out of stock everywhere. Finally found a replacement and it seemed to be a bit more snug but not entirely secure. I ended up using a small piece of tape where the ring attaches to the body and the extra friction seems to have solved the problem for me.
@AlexZafer
@AlexZafer 4 жыл бұрын
@@karledwards Did the same thing... I put tiny bit of gaffer tape around the ring -- it made a tight fit without ruining the camera with glue. I shoot with a GRII, which in reality produces pretty much the same image & handling/size/ease-of-use as the GRIII. Here's my thoughts: 1) The Ricoh has EXCEPTIONAL black and white, so if you shoot in monochrome, I'd use the Ricoh. 2) if you're going on assignment professionally, then bring the ricoh and the DSLR, if not, you'll need to self reflect on the actual pain-in-the-ass which is lugging around a DSLR. If you want candid, in the moment, travel and natural feeling moments, the GR is the way to go. Its unobtrusive and puts people at ease. It also forces you to get in close to get the frame, which produces even better results. If you want to get some real life examples of the quality and images you can get from the GR, go to my website here: www.StoryVisionStudio.com Under the "Daily Documentary" link at top, ever single black and white shot you see was shot with the GRII. In my eyes, its more than enough image quality to get print quality results.

The IBIS is nice (and works fairly well!) for evening/night shots. Just got my GRiii a couple of days ago and so far that's all I've really had the time to play with. :) I just set my Video button to turn it on/off though. Will likely keep if off for daytime/fast shooting, as I'm sure the IBIS is a big part of the battery consumption. Awesome review. Bang-on beginning to end and reflects my thoughts on the camera and the GR line. I've been shooting it (like you, film as well) for over a decade and none other compare. A couple differing thoughts: 1. That Ricoh branded battery charger (and for that matter battery spares) wasn't the only unit available at or before launch. Any camera that uses an Olympus style Li-92B or Li-90B will work perfectly fine. There are and have been *many* available, but few-to-no sellers marked them as compatible early on. They were. It's the same battery. Though I've yet to find a 3rd-party maker that lasts as long as OEM, despite the very overstated mA ratings on some. But whatever, they're cheap. 2. I actually love the on-camera USB-C charging solution. I do wish they'd included the off-camera charger, but the aforementioned after-market units are dirt cheap. For the simple fact that it's USB-C is why I love it. I can transfer images *while* charging it without a) using a different cable than I have for my smartphone, and b) I can use *any* USB-C cable connected to *any* of my power sources, even for my laptop because the brick uses USB-C universal charging and detect and supply the correct amperage. In short, it's just the inclusion of USB-C in general that I love and opens up many possibilities for charging and transfer that weren't possible before. Plus, you know, it's current tech. 3. And this is related to all the above... You *can* use your camera while you charge the battery if you're using a USB-C power-brick. Sure it's clunky and not ideal, but with a decently long USB cable (a nice braided one that doesn't bind) you can plug it and shoot it "tethered" in an emergency situation. And the battery will be charging *while* you're shooting, which happens quickly because USB-C charges at a higher rate. Many people carry around a power-brick for their juice-hungry smartphones these days already... You can use the same one for the GR if needed. Boom. Carry on. :) 4. IBIS. I once agreed with you and I certainly didn't have it on my personal list of things I wanted too see on a new GR.... But damn, it works. I can shoot this thing, which already has (as you mention) *drastically* good and improved high-ISO performance, down to 1/4 sec shutter and with IBIS it's golden. Pure and simple. I didn't care or want but I've certainly been impressed by its effectiveness. Blah blah blah. I'm done blathering. NICE REVIEW!
@karledwards
@karledwards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. You make some good points but I don't agree that shooting tethered with a power brick is a replacement for a good charger. Ya, it would work. But would you really want to?? Having USB-C charging is nice if you're on the road because you can charge an extra battery while you're external charger is busy. Of course, fi they don't give you a charger in the box you're forced to fork out the money and get an external charger anyway... Hence my point about chargers! Also... IBIS? I'm a street photographer. It doesn't matter how still I can hold my camera, my subjects are moving so IBIS is 100% not needed in my street camera. I can definitely see it coming in handy for shooting video with non stabilized lenses but that's just not what the GR III is about :)

@@karledwards I wonder how many buyers get fooled on ebay, into buying a GRIII, which is actually a GR Digital III. At first glance, if you're unfamiliar with the cameras, it's an easy mistake. To summarise; EVF = The Matrix LCD Screen = The real world
@rudykammermeier8227
@rudykammermeier8227 4 жыл бұрын
It needs a view finder of some sort. An EVF would make the thing perfect, but you can buy the Ricoh GV-1 or GV-2, which are optical view finders, which is better than nothing. LCD screens are OK, but they can get really annoying on a bright day, when you can't see anything. You conveniently forgot to mention that.
@karledwards
@karledwards 4 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from but in this case I think the "lack" of an EVF is actually one of the best things about the GR3. It forces you to work differently with the camera and, personally, I found that liberating! Definitely not for everyone though!

Is there some How To Be A KZfaqr guide somewhere that tells you that a ridiculous number of jump cuts will make your videos edgy and unique? Yup, edgy and unique, just like everybody else.

Haha! What exactly about my video makes the claim that it's edgy and unique? It's simply the style of the video.

Street Shootr not a style, you just have to, because it’s hard to make video and we know it. Don’t go behind this kind of statement, it makes you more stupid than you are. Just try to make longer take, it will be a huge jump in quality.

They've come a long way with the 3 actually - never had any issues with dust on mine... plus they added the sensor cleaning feature. Seemed pretty solid to me!

I guess that depends on your perspective... No two lenses are the same and personal preference matters a ton. But the GR III is no slouch in the optics dept.
