Ricoh GRIII: Will It Landscape?

The Ricoh GRIII is a small point-and-shoot camera with a big APS-C sensor. It's mainly used by street photographer as a camera that fits in your pocket and looks discreet. I use it as a camera that I can always have with me to pull out when needed. I haven't tried shooting "serious" landscape shots with it before. In this video, I pull out the adapters, quick release plates, shutter release cords and more to see if it will take a good landscape shot.

For those who were born without clockmaker hands, its a lifesaver having the IS and the only HUGE downside to this camera (especially since it was made in 2019) the Ricoh official app for transferring photos to your phone just well, sucks. I had to spend 10 bucks on the App store for GR Viewer (sucked but 500% worth it) which is essentially one guy who made a better app than a huge company. The GR 2 onwards are insanely great cameras especially with the form factor and it has rebirthed my love and desire to be in photography again

Great video. I've been using a Ricoh GRII for a few years and love it. Never thought about putting filters in front of it like that. I might have to try that out. I really like your end results, too. Beautiful shots. Might have to get a GRIII. I've been thinking about full-frame Nikon, but being able to carry the camera everywhere is a huge plus.

It’s a shame you didn’t use snap focus as that allows you to set the hyper focal distance rather than guesstimating on an object as you do with all other auto-focus cameras. You can get an ultra-wide 21mm equivalent lens as well. Anyway, I’m glad you also did a side-by-side comparison as you’re never going to get best results doing something on a piece of kit for the first time. Thanks for the video though, it’s great to see the Ricoh being used off the street too 😊
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 2 жыл бұрын
Snap focus isn't going to be as accurate as finding a focus point for hyperfocal distance in landscape photography. There just aren't enough snap focus settings. It would probably be fine depending on how close the foreground is. I considered the 21mm when I got the camera years ago, but didn't think I'd use it for landscape photos. I thought making the video would be fun and I haven't used the Ricoh with a tripod since I made the video. For me, the 21mm wouldn't likely be used, but if someone really wanted to use it for landscape photography, it may be a good purchase.
@PatBloomfield
@PatBloomfield 2 жыл бұрын
@@BryanHansel Interesting, I guess it's whatever you feel comfortable with. With Snap Focus set to 2.5m at f/8 gives a DoF from 1.15m to infinity, although I use f/11 as I have found that it is slightly sharper 🙂 Most people have gotten used to focusing on an object now, but for me, snap focus is one of the great benefits of the Ricoh system.
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel 2 жыл бұрын
@@PatBloomfield If I remember right, the foreground was about 2 feet away in this shot, so the 2.5m Snap Focus wouldn't have worked. I use Snap Focus when I'm using the camera how I normally use it, but for landscape photography I like to be exact in how I shoot. It is a great feature and with such a slow focus system, it has allowed me to get shots where its normal system would fail. It's one of my favorite cameras for sure.

Single autofocus point and focus at approximately the hyperfocal distance. If the tripod is about four feet off the ground that's about on the bottom third line of a tic-tac-toe grid on the LCD screen.

All of that extra gear makes the GR as cumbersome as a DSLR set up. This is precisely why I don't shoot landscapes anymore. Great results though! My GR is my go-to camera.
@johnsmith1474
@johnsmith1474 2 жыл бұрын
It's not about "cumbersome" it's about weight. There is nothing cumbersome about a camera if you use it enough to be completely familiar.
@dougscottking
@dougscottking 2 жыл бұрын
I get your point, But don’t think you have to have all this gear to get some good landscape results. He’s just testing it like he would his main camera for paid work. Looked like he was just doing 1/20s for many shots you can do handheld with the ibis. Or it only weighs 1/2 Lb so a small gorilla pod will do. You could also probably pull some highlights back from a raw file so ND not 100% necessarily . But I think Nissi makes a small filter kit if needed.
@chickendrop
@chickendrop 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsmith1474 "There is nothing cumbersome about a camera if you use it enough to be completely familiar"?? That's absurd. That's like saying There is nothing cumbersome about the Airbus A380 Superjumbo if you fly it enough to be completely familiar. There's nothing wrong with lugging all of the extra gear (tripod, adapter, filter track, filters, shutter release cable) along to get your shot, but you can't argue that it doesn't make the GR cumbersome. The GR is marketed as a pocketable powerhouse. There's no way your fitting all that gear in your pockets, unless we're talking about the pockets in your gear bag.

I am surprised to learn that the GR iii shows a distinct drop-off in IQ after f/5.6. I would definitely recommend trying some shots at f/5.6 and f/8 for landscapes.
@BryanHansel
@BryanHansel Жыл бұрын
It's all about the compromises that you want to make. There's a trade-off in sharpness due to diffraction plus not shooting at the sharpest aperture and depth of field. F/11 gets you more depth of field but it may not be as sharp as f/5.6 or f/8. Depending on your priorities, you may make different decisions than I do.

Can you disengage AF and shoot real manual focus (not snap focus) - otherwise camera would be focusing each time you pressed the remote ?

The easiest way would be to assign manual focus to the Fn button. Then you could auto-focus quickly and turn off the autofocus just by pressing the Fn button. I'm not sure if there's a way to set up rear button focus using the Fn. If there was, that would be the way to set it up for landscape photography.

It's a lot of money for something I wouldn't use often. I'm not using my GRIII as much as I did either. Using landscape as a verb is cringe inducing. That said, this is a well produced investigation. Good work flow presentation using the camera on site. Of course because this is not a place where weight matters, you might as well just use the bigger heavier camera, and get some exposure & focus stacking done. Or, if you wanted to demo light weight rig, you could use a far lighter tripod.
