I was 18 when the Eps came out - saw them at Bristol Poly, with about another 300 - and then at uni when Nowhere came out. And then finishing uni when this LP came out. Ergo following them round the country as was the habit for many in those days (I slept in Bournemouth train station after a Fanclub gig) and, like you, this sound is emotional, visceral, evocative, powerful... What a time. Everyone says how the era you grew up in is what you say was the best, that 'kids these days...' don't know.... But surely it's true? From about 88-mid 90s had to be the best periods, or at least one of the best given the 60s and late 70s punk times, to be young and into music. Since about 95? Lots of good and great albums but no overwhelming, all consuming 'scene'. Of course a lot of that has to do with the age you were at but, even so.... But back to Ride. Glorious.

Ride & Lush toured together in the early 90s. I met Miki in Norman, Oklahoma. She was dating a Flaming Lips member(who went on to create Mercury Rev)...I see where they got their name(Lush), but I saw them in Dallas and it was amazing. Ride was magical and took the audience on a journey. The merch was a t-shirt that simply said Ride Lush Ride Lush...across the bottom of the shirt. I still have it.

I love the smooth velvety textures in Ride's music. Every instrument sounds so right, so tight. Energetic yet laid-back at the same time. Hard to believe this is 21 years old, it sounds so fresh. I kind of think this song is about travelling non-stop, and feeling spaced-out and weary because of it. (which I think is a theme running through the album). Wonderful band, they're not forgotten.

8:17 of pure perfection, one which every current music student should be made to listen and analyse as part of their course: The structure, the tightness, walls of sound pummelling like tsunami waves and Alan Moulder’s production. 0.42 when the guitars kick and 6:57 when they thrash it to bits. The energy is insane. Robert Smith wasn’t wrong when he said Ride played their guitars like chainsaws! This single and its b-side, ‘Grasshopper’, blew everything out of the water when released in Feb 92. It was a landmark moment. I certainly played this to death and was on heavy rotation on my Walkman for many years. Listening to it now, it’s still powerful and has stood the test of time and outlasted a lot of the dross that was circulating in the charts back then. Ride should have followed it up with ‘Cool Your Boots’ as the next single because ‘Twisterella’, no matter how great that was, was completely lost on many fans of their earlier eps. Hindsight…
First heard this in January 1992 in an "Our price" record store in Essex. Staff played the vinyl 12" at 33rpm, John Peel style; it sounded like a slab of doom rock, and utterly brilliant. When the confused looking part time sales assistant told me it was Ride's new single I was floored... those fey indie kids had apparently grown balls the size of Jupiter. Was rather disappointed when they adjusted the record deck to the correct speed. Still remains one of my favourite songs ever.
