Thanks Richard for the thought and effort you put in to improving this wonderful little device. Other future customers like me will benefit down the line 👍 And hats off to Beeline for creating something so much in the spirit of biking. Thank you and merry Christmas all!

Thank you so much for your kind words! It has flaws as all devices and software tend to, even if it's just accepted compromises. But as a good work in progress I absolutely believe in it. And I'm sure it's popularity will continue to grow, if only because of the cost, convenience and aesthetics triangle.

I've been researching the Beeline vs the Zumo XT and I appreciate the detailed videos and your honesty. I know the devices I listed are worlds apart from what they are, but I appreciate them both for different reasons. I'll be mounting either device on my Trophy SE on the factory mount, so I have plenty of space but I also don't want my motorcycle to turn into a car on wheels. While there is a sale on the Zumo XT at the moment, it's still twice the price of the Beeline. Decisions, decisions. Thanks again for your insight into the device.

Thank you Aaron. I sold my Garmin. I won't have a phone on my bars now, having gone through three iPhones (breaks the camera every 20k or so) on different bikes with different mounts. So I purely rely on my Beeline. It hasn't missed a beat, I use in monsoons, the battery life has been good for a 3 day 1,000 mile trip. And if used with the OpenStreetMap to create tailored GPX files for it, then it navigates as close to perfect as you'll get with anything else. Plus it's very affordable, attractive and easy to remove or transfer between between bikes, with no messy wiring either. You don't get a map, but you do on the phone app if you need to refer to it. but if you just want the basics, it works. Let me know what you decide!

Ahhh, thanks! I'm planning to buy one but they are getting "expensive" over here (X16 for the exchange rate!) Two questions: 1. Visibility in bright day light WITH sunglasses? 2. The material used on the Beeline dial - is it glass? (If so I assume it can shatter when it falls to the ground?)
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
I don't wear sunglasses when I ride, but its visible through my dark drop down internal visor so I assume no problem - not sure about polarized lenses, which don't work with car heads up displays if you didn't know. (1) Actually the brighter the sunshine/daylight the clearer it is. (2) It's funny you should say that because I just dropped it for the first time about ten minutes ago, from about 4 ft high. It landed display side down and bounced (indoors). I turned it all, all good. No visible scratch on it anywhere. I think it may be very clear perspex rather than glass, but I'm not entirely sure. Based on weight in hand I think glass would be heavier. The plastic (rather than metal) version should handle knocks and vibration better is my assumption. And is much cheaper.

Can you opt to exclude motorways as a route criteria. I like to take the backroads instead if highways
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, when you enter a destination you can select route preferences and avoid motorways.

Very thorough thank you. Some owners report that Beeline is not good in town driving with instructions coming too late so missing turns. Did you experience this at all?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Actually quite to opposite. Because it isn't trying to do too many things at once it has plenty of thinking power to provide what you need to know soonest. Consistently when running Garmin, Waze and Beeline, it's indicated when I've taken a wrong turn quicker than the others have. It's important to either plan routes in the app, or to use OpenStreetMap format maps when planning routes (zoom in 100% on every waypoint) and creating GPX files for import. Either method is spot in accurate in the thousands of miles I've tested it so far. It has limitations (pointed out in the video), but overall it is really good value for money, easily transferable from bike to bike, doesn't need to be powered by the bike, and does exactly what it claims. The interface takes a little time to get used to it, because it switches from a countdown of e.g 0.7, 0.6, 0.5 miles away from the turn, to 7, 6, 5 seconds away from it. So if you don't keep an eye on it, then look down, it can initially confuse you whether you're looking at 10ths of a remaining mile or remaining seconds. So initially you can miss a turn if you're thinking in seconds rather than 10ths. But once you get used to what you're looking at, you never miss a turn. I've always hated voice prompts, so I don't miss those. A map can be useful but is much more distracting. The Beeline is all killer, no filler. I hope that helps?

Hi Richard. How did you navigate the route you made on my route app on your beeline?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 2 жыл бұрын
Plan the route in MyRoute-app. Make sure the waypoints are properly placed when the OpenStreetMap is overlaid. Select Save As / GPX 1.1. On a MacBook that will download to the Downloads folder. Navigate to the downloaded file via Finder. Right-click on the downloaded file and select Share / AirDrop. When your phone's ID shows up select it. On your phone, it will provide a list of compatible apps to open the file in. Select Beeline - boom the route is on your phone and in Beeline!

I tried one with my Samsung S21 phone and the App caused it to overheat, and my phone shut down also shutting down the Beeline. It is JUNK!
@RichDunn
@RichDunn Жыл бұрын
The app cannot cause it to overheat, or shut down due to heat (40 yrs software experience). I have ten friends with a Beeline, and none of theirs has ever overheated. And we ride in temperatures close to 100F throughout the summertime (3 months). We also ride in temps around zero in winter too (3 months), and the Beeline has never failed me. It is NOT junk, you've just been unlucky. Reach out to Beeline for a replacement.

What does the unit do if I don’t set a destination?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
Because it doesn't display a map, it just show a little motorcycle icon, indicating it is awaiting destination input from the phone app.

@@RichDunn ah, was really hoping it defaulted to a cardinal direction compass with the arrow going north. Would be helpful when getting lost on purpose out in the middle of no where
@BowserFilm
@BowserFilm 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichDunn suppose I could set a destination that is somewhere due north of me and have it function just the same, no?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
@@BowserFilm You can set a destination and then put it in compass mode (toggle switch in app between route or compass mode) and then the app will let you get lost, while the arrow is always pointing directly towards the final destination 'as the crow flies'. So you can have fun getting lost and discovering new roads and gently take your time moving towards the right direct at your free will. I you run out of time, simply toggle back to route mode and it will take you to the final destination in the quickest possible time. Hope that helps?

Great review! is it necessary that the phone has gps and an active internet connection?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
With the Beeline you only need phone service connection to load the route in the app. Once it's loaded, so long as you don't close the Beeline app, the Beeline device will work for the whole route, whether you have phone reception or not.

@@RichDunn Thank you! Gps on the phone must be active?
@RichDunn
@RichDunn 3 жыл бұрын
@@ciliegi Your phone is not a GPS device. It doesn't use satellites to know where it is, it works it out from its relationship to telephone operator network masts. You need a phone signal when you load the route to your Beeline device from your phone. But once it is there, it doesn't matter if you lose phone signal, the route on your Beeline will still navigate correctly.

When I want a map, voice, and wifi, I've got a Zumo XT. The beauty of the Beeline is that it is the minimum mandatory things that you'd need, with the minimum distractions. That'll either appeal or not depending on the user. I like it, but there's no doubt that voice and maps can be very handy too!
