Gorgeous spring evening for a ride on this highly scenic commuter run. Engineer gave us a fast and smooth ride. At 4:04 that diesel roar was not the Danbury train. It was our train. The engineer started the diesel engines and he was fully in diesel mode before we emerged from the tunnel.

Love your video. I take this train as part of my daily commute from NYC to Poughkeepsie. There was a conductor who described this train as the "sunset express" over the intercom. For me, it's the "commuter express" - to home!

Your Metro North train ride to Poughkeepsie was the best express ride I have ever seen. There was not lots of slow speeds while skipping the stations between Harlem-125 Street and Beacon. That is how an express ride is supposed to be.

I take the 5:08 home every day, except that day, March 18th, 2022. I was actually recovering from St. Patrick's Day at Mahoney's the day before. This is great commentary. Thank you! I do believe the current 5:29 out of GCT serves as the longest point to point non-stop. It runs from GCT to Beacon without the stop at Harlem 125th St.

Considering that the East usually loses out to the West when it comes to railroad scenery, I've always said that the ride up the Hudson to Albany is the most scenic Amtrak ride in the East, and that obviously goes for Metro-North as well. It would seem that limited passenger service on that Beacon to Danbury line would be a good idea. Thanks for the bonus coverage of Poughkeepsie.

Agreed Roast Beef. Even if its just 1-2 Roundtrips per day between only Albany and Grand Central. Plus with the LIRR about to start service (here in late 2022)it could also help with overcrowding with riders going to/from Long Island and the Hudson River Valley/Albany area.

This was nice! I've never been on Metro-North before, but I watch videos of it all the time. This train looks fun to ride, and the fact that it stops at Harlem then skips all the way to Beacon reminds me of the Cannonball on the LIRR. The Hudson Line is also one of my favorite Rail Lines in the USA. I'm supposed take an Amtrak trip up to Rochester soon, and I'm excited to finally see the Hudson Line in person! I also like that you talked with that engineer at the end. He seemed very friendly. Anyways, I enjoy your videos, and have a nice day.

I used to make this round-trip as part of my Albany-Empire run every weekend in 2018 and part of 2019 before moving down into the city. Another great vid with superb narration! Well done! Like someone else said, you and “Distant Signal” ‘s Danny Harmon are naturals! 👍🏻 To somewhat finish your story … the South Penn Ry was graded in sections before the truce was called. Vandy (& NYC) didn’t know what to do with it until the Pennsy Turnpike bought some of it to use in the highway construction - but I don’t know / remember which part(s). (This was from an old Model Railroader story.)

Nice. I live up the hill from Polipel Island (where Bannerman’s Arsenal is located). Breakneck Ridge station is located south of MP55, which you passed just before you reached Bannerman’s. Correct, the Beacon Line passed overhead just before CP58, where it connects to the Hudson Line. It was formerly the “Beacon Secondary” that connected the Maybrook Line to the Hudson Line at Hopewell Junction. After the Poughkeepsie Bridge burned, both eastern part of the Maybrook Line and the Beacon Secondary eventually became the “Beacon Line.” It is out of service, still owned by Metro North (MNR). MNR gave freight trackage rights to the Housatonic Rail Road, which does not use it. The line has yet to be sold.

I really enjoy your content. However, I was wondering how ticketing for these various railroads worked? Is it possible to buy a pass and ride on say a Metro North and a NJ Transit train with the same ticket? Do they code share like airlines? I was wondering how it all ties together or is it all individually purchased segments? Also, are there different prices for the different railroads or are they pretty similar in pricing structure? I live where trains aren’t really an option but there is talk about linking some of our biggest cities by rail (Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati) and I don’t have any knowledge of passenger rail in terms of “brands” or pricing versus driving etc and was hoping you could touch on this topic on one of your rides?
