Join us on a motorcycle tour of the scenic New River Gorge area of West Virginia!!
The ride out Route 60 from Charleston to Fayetteville is a fantastic ride. Starting at the State capital along the Kanawha River kicks off a very scenic trip. Headed east out of the capital you travel along the river as it cuts through the mountains. The backbone of the economy, coal, is prevalent as you leave the city.
As you ride , there are several opportunities to stop and have breakfast at Tudors Biscuit World if you start out early like I did. The Peppi is always my go too, it's delicious!!!
If you play close attention, just before you get to the town of Gauley Bridge, there's a small unmarked oasis to cool off and rehydrate with natural spring water. Thanks to whoever supplied the old picnic table. Just look for the small gravel pull off.
Once you reach Gauley Bridge, the riding and the views become spectacular. I veered off of 60 at Chimney Corner, to travel Rt. 16 the rest of the way to Fayetteville. It was an amazing ride as it followed the New River. Lots of twists and turns, fellow bikers and amazing scenery. I highly recommend this stretch. That route will take you to Rt. 19 and over the New River Gorge bridge as you head north. The visitors center is a good place to stop and stretch your legs and take in this magnificent structure. If you travel past the visitors center you can ride down the one way switch backs to arrive at the bottom of the gorge. It's well worth the time. Some of the turns are severe so be cautious not to high center your bike. The road is scarred with those who didn't.
After spending some time watching rafters it was back up the Gorge and off to New River Harley Davidson. It's just a few minutes away, up 19 and back onto Rt. 60. Lots of great people, a friendly staff and a very cool t-shirt. After meeting tons of new friends, it was west on 60 to Hawks Nest and back to Gauley Bridge. Only the few miles outside of Gauley Bridge is really good riding, but worth the trip to stop by the park and overlook. Rt. 16 is a better ride, but it makes for a nice loop on this trip.
There are so great many see things to see on this route, so head out and discover them. Enjoy!!
