When I first started out working in the Gig Economy back in 2019 it was so easy to make £100+ a day working during lockdown and the times of Covid was a part to play in that but the last year its got so much harder to make money delivering. From the start of this channel I said I'd never quit my day job to deliver full time..... I NEARLY did last year but i really looked at the situation and LUCKY I never went ahead with it. Really and I mean REALLY think about it... if your having thoughts of doing this job do it as a side hustle because these companies could close up shop overnight!

The companies will keep paying lower and lower if riders keep accepting everything sent their way. If a fee is too low, don’t accept the trip. Fellow riders, don’t be taken for a mug! Set yourself a minimum, don’t accept anything below that.

This is also a pretty negative thing to see as a delivery driver as well though. Like maybe you do tip your drivers (how should I know if you don't), but a _huge_ number of people say exactly this and don't tip anything. I have heard "don't worry I will tip you" or "I tip every single time" or "sorry for this inconvenient location I will tip" more often then I have actually been tipped. If you take people at face value apparently everyone is a super generous tipper. If you actually work the job though it's maybe 1 in 20 deliveries you see a tip.

@@sam23696 I get it but it doesn't matter regardless right? I'll pass on my savings when I get them from Uber but some restaurants are charging me 3 - 5 £ just for taking my order through uber-eats, and then charging me 2 to 3 quid on delivery fees, then I'm expected to tip my rider on top of it? It's hard work. I'll tip but not as much as I would do if the businesses on there weren't leeching cash off me for doing their job in the first place, of which they get paid when I buy their services and goods. I'm not 'super generous' but i'll give what I can in my current financial situation, which might only be a few quid, but it's mostly made worse by the fees charged on the apps.

The fact that you that you don't agree with not going right to the customers door made me smile so much. I live in Amsterdam and have been working for Deliveroo since 2017 + Ubereats since 2021 and I've always thought that going to the customers door (even if it's like 6 floors up) is the normal and right thing to do. Seen a bunch of other drivers here telling customers to go downstairs and always thought that that was the exact way to NOT get a tip haha. Anyway, just found out bout' your channel and I love it. It really depends on the building. Some are the kind of gated complex or restricted complex where you really aren't meant to go to the door. Of course if you have a delivery bag and look confident you can get through pretty much any checkpoint anyway and make it to the door, and I usually do if the instructions say that. But in these kinds of apartments I'm not going to try and assassin's creed stealth my way through a doorway, awkwardly enter a door code and try to find my way through a maze of hallways, they can come get it. Some complexes are fully open to the public and the apartment door is effectively the front door, so I'll be there with the food, but like I said it really depends on the building.

I definitely have sympathy for the riders/drivers who are finding it hard to make ends meet, but where I live at least, not only have the delivery fees gone up, many of the restaurants have put their prices up as well, plus there's the overall cost of living shit to consider. Then combine that with the fact that sometimes the rider/driver will do multiple drops, so by the time you get your food it's lukewarm or cold, why would people pay over the odds for that? Personally, I just use restaurants that have their own drivers now, cos it's cheaper, I don't have to pay some bullshit "service charge", and I have never once had cold food delivered to me.

The thing is it doesn't matter how well a great driver does, they're still paid the same as the shitty ones. Most of the good drivers eventually realize it's hardly worth it a lot of times unless they grab multiple orders. It's a cycle. Shitty pay = drivers picking up multiple orders that can lead to food being lukewarm or cold. If you order from the delivery apps you should pay well or like you said, use the restaurant's delivery. Or people could just go pick up their food and save on all the fees and get their food hot -- obviously not always possible or worth it

@@shybzrk true pal with out the promotions it is not viable I feel, plus tipping culture in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 is not a thing so they need to reflect this in fares or encourage people to tip more. Pizzas in a thermal bag can stay warm for an hour so the flip side is that you provide a service people would not get if they tried to get the food themselves or better yet at all, not the niche market this should be really as home delivery I can imagine is only for the few as who does not want to sit around on their arse all day ordering food in?

Gig delivery jobs are all about supply and demand. If there's a huge demand in an area and too few drivers, well, the offers will be more lucrative. If demand is low but with many drivers, then you'll get no requests or small amount offers.

Working in a time based model sure has its upsides. Like over here in Germany, I work for Lieferando (aka. Takeaway) and they're paying 12 € per hour and we get to choose when to work in advance. Even if we don't have an order active, we're still getting paid. Then there's a bonus system on top of that, where after a certain amount of deliveries each month, you get an amount added to every delivery you do. And various compensations for stuff such as wear on your own bike, extra for working in the winter and another extra for working on the weekend. Seeing how companies elsewhere apparently pay by how many deliveries and I believe how far you go seems really unresponsible to me because I imagine that it'd lead to people working more recklessly?

Here in New Zealand meal delivery drivers are mostly hired as independent contractors, meaning the large food chains can get away with paying drivers less than half the minimum wage. Drivers have to pay for their own petrol plus pay government levies. Plus taxes. Yes they can claim a portion of their petrol costs via tax return, by the time all the other taxes/ costs are factored in it leaves the drivers with very little, especially those doing the day shift. Oh, and being contractors means no holiday pay, no sick pay...nothing. It is basically a loophole in the law that allows employers to evade any responsibility to their workers while paying slave wages. I haven't watched your video to the end yet so maybe you have the same system in the UK, I'm not sure. Anyway I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel! 😀

Yesterday did £15.53 an hour all on deliveroo Really good as a side hustle. Earns me 1k quid extra a month after expenses for 15-18hrs a week.. Mixed with fulltime job in a mornings is really worth it.. Just not UberShits

Thank god I madd that decision to stay in my day job too. Yes it can be quite tempting to go solo on delivery when the money is good as how I felt when I started the gig 5 months ago, but I'd advise anyone to keep their job. Deliveroo is just icing on the cake. My take and experience.

In the end i Totally agree with you. It's better to learn other trades then be a full time delivery partner. About myself I am a full delivery partner with Zomato in the southern part of India. Here in India there were three companies namely Zomato swiggy and Uber eats. Uber eats left before covid in 2020. Coming back in 2022. The pay has decreased dramatically, as both companies are running in loss, though the revenue has increased a lot. The riders of swiggy are been on strike because of very low paid. And company has not even bother. If the strike continues they may even close the zone.

One thing i would do, if i would live in an area that had any of these services, is using an E-bike. They are so better for the cities. You basically can drive everywhere and you are as quick as if you would drive a scooter. But besides that, i love the style of video ^w^

This is why you expand keep your options high always and I mean always have multiple apps I have a Amazon,Grubhuh,Uber& Doordash as an option. I would start a trade but school here in CA is to damn expensive not to mention you have to pay to keep your license I want to open up some air soft fields or even off road go karts but it’s to damn expensive it’s almost like they don’t want you to succeed. I’ll just keep saving and expanding as much as possible to not need the apps if only CA didn’t tuck you over every turn of the way and road block you with regulations after regulations. I learned the lesson the hard when my main source of income Amazon flex stopped operations here in my market back in 2018 the money was great and I was only working 2-3 hrs but all of sudden it stopped the door slammed shut I had doordash and postmates but that was dry take it from me always stay ahead always.

It's all a question of supply and demand, as long as there is an inflow of cheap labour that is willing to work at or below market price wages are not going to go up. Appreciate yoursensible comment on the gig jobs, it's a gig job, not a full time employment, it's good to make a bit of extra when you're a student or in your free time or if you're half retired, it's not something you want to have as a career.

I always expect the driver to deliver to my door. My delivery instructions state to leave it in my carport. I have a driveway with plenty of room for parking. If I don’t want to go out in the rain to pick up my food, I also do not want to go out to the driver’s car and get wet. I always tip though, $5-7

i have walking difficulties so use deliveroo and uber religiously. Used to be just eat but fees got to high. i pay monthly subs so avoid the high fees with the other companies but the costs of food has got out of control.......sausage and cheese baguetes from last year has gone from 4.50 to 8.50 and some companies charging over £5 for a coffee... something needs to be done with the prices they are selling at to encourage customers whilst drivers get at keast min pay.

If they would just add a few dollars to the order it wouldn’t be such a big deal. For example I see ALLOT of $7 orders batch pay then $2.50tip (if lucky) = $9.50 if they would just add 2 or 3 dollars $11.50/$12.50 it wouldn’t be so bad

Not a great day mate but at least you got home safely. it's a shame that there's not a set up to make sure you guys get paid better. You might want to concider delivering medical supplies to chemists, hospitals and doctors offices as there's much more money in it. The app used to deliver medical supplies in America is Goshare but I don't know if there's an app for London that caters for delivery driveres.

I'm deciding to move to an electric escooter within the new year when the weather improves... Currently using my father's car to continue my deliveries... as last week my car completely broke down. Was picked up and taken to a garage, and the whole engine needs replacing in my DS3 (2015) with labor going to cost £3,635 to get it fixed :( rather than scrapping it. Father is helping pay for it then sell it on... If it wasn't for my dad, I wouldn't have had enough to cover in my bank. All my earns since September would have been GONE in an instant. Not easy when you're still paying £4,800 left of a bank loan I originally got for a car a few years back. I don't do deliveries in the daytime especially in town with York traffic wardens are ruthless for giving out tickets, especially outside Mcdonald's.

I been doing this on an ebike in Cheltenham and its seems to be reasonable money for the hours I put in I do 40 a week and work 5 days a week 12pm-8pm. At the moment it's making me between £400 to £500 a week. However I work in a very good area for deliver roo and used to work in a bad area where you did not get many restaurants. So location is everything and is more important than how fast you can conplate and order becouse if your not able to get orders all day for at least 8 hours a day than your not going to make that much. Lastly there are ups and downs through out the mouth as times change and the current climate effects the amount of people ordering. Like London eats mentioned work on something else at the same time you do have something to fall back on or your be left with no income if deliver roo shuts down in your area.

I don't use the apps but when I get my kebab on a Friday night I'd always give the lad a couple cans of Stella/red stripe ( whatever I'm drinking) let him hit the j, I've even made him a one to take home hahah , I always tip when I go pick up from the shop, couple of the Turkish lads on the grill at hench af, I'm always joking with them that they never have chicken kebabs left cos them guys be scoffing all that lean protein ! Always hugs and fist bumps when I'm passing , my 6 year old son was like ' dad how do you know those guys ' when we were walking past and the big guy came out to meet my son! For me it's important to build a relationship and tip what I can , and I get a great feeling from it it's respect on both ends! Sorry for rambling , stay blessed 🙌

i think its a cultural thing , here in NZ come to the street , will not enter hotel/apartment block to find you - rarely happens when they make you and its rude AF. There usually is no parking here in city so guys in car will flat out not do it , and if on a bike , even locked they get stolen so easily - i wouldn't take the risk. even one guy on a scooter , parked at a petrol station to pick up , and some guys in a van quickly pulled up , they jumped out , picked up his scooter and put in van and drove off. So less time away from car/scooter/bike the better

I don't agree that the delivery prices should go up, its the reverse lojic people always go by. If they uped the delivery to over £5 like 90% of places are then I personally would never never order from somewhere with high delivery. I feel for the drivers but higher prices means less customers but more profit from less sales, same for the riders, would you rather have 1 delivery an hour for £10 or 6 delivery's in an hour for £4. The prices of the food is also why less people are ordering because they also do the reverse logic. Everyone needs more customers so they put prices up to stay afloat, litrally dosnt make sense to me, it's just scaring people away
