FWIW, I believe that Manzarek actually played the bass parts using the pedals on his organ instead of the keys, which makes the fact that both hands were occupied on his trademark melodies while at the same time playing the bass parts with his feet all the more remarkable.

The Doors have always been one of the more complex and deep bands I always took the dive into! One of the most shortlived bands, but easily one of the most influential with a legacy still strong.

The Doors are quite possibly my favourite 60s Rock band alongside The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Velvet Underground because of that. For one thing, Jim's dark imagination pretty much made the band and is the main reason why I consider them to be Metal pioneers because of how dark and morbid their music is.

@Joshua R well, "criminally underrated" might be a bit too much, but I'd agree that they are much less present in the mainstream media compared to other old bands like Beatles, Led Zep and so on. They could put up an auction for a crusty sock found under Lennon's bed; it'd be all over the news and sell for 21 Trillion dollar (error margin 99%). You don't have that kind of thing with the doors. You might get a 30 sec news bit on Morrison's day of death, if that.

Holy crap I've heard this song a thousand times and I was not aware of the whispering track overlayed on the vocal. As someone who still owns the Doors on original vinyl from when it was released i always considered myself a day-one fan. Although this was never one of my favorite Doors songs, this is crazy! Time to get the old headphones out and re-listen. Great video. Thanks.

I _literally_ grew up on this song - a cassette in the car was played so often it might as well have been stuck - and this song was easily one of my favorites, maybe even #1. I was like 4~7 when we were driving around all the fucking time, and The Doors was all I wanted to listen to. I also fell in love with it again in NFS Underground 2, with the Snoop Dogg version. And then _again_ with the Infected Mushroom remix, though admittedly the instrumental covers up the effect quite a bit. And yet, I still never really noticed it. I thought it was just some reverb. But now that it's pointed out, it's so hard to miss

As a kid I used to get guitar lessons at a music school, which also formed bands and organised gigs for these bands. Riders on the Storm was the very first song I ever performed in front of an audience. Memories!

Well done analysis especially linking Heidegger’s idea of throwness with ROTS lyrics. The Doors are arguably one of the best if not the best rock band to come out of the US. Every once in a while with a little luck ingredients come together to mesh into a synergistic whole greater than the sum of its parts. One example is The Doors Robby Kreiger is an underrated guitarist and somgwriter. John Densmore is an overlooked drummer who gave such a steady beat and texture to the Doors songs. Ray Manzarek was integral in creating the Doors atmospheric and ominous sound with his organ and keyboard playing. Jim brought everything together. The beautiful Dionysian Shaman front man who played words in the band. He is wholly underrated as a singer. He is up there with Sinatra IMAO. The Doors basically lasted from 1966-1971 with Morrison. Think about how many songs and albums they accomplished in that time. It’s insane. Jim was misunderstood too. He might have had some demons and self-destructive behaviors but he wasn’t a smug asshole. He was a kind and gentle soul really. It sucks Jim, Jimi, Kurt and Janis were all taken from us too soon. Jim would be 77 now I believe. Wish he was still here. RIP Ray RIP Jim and Pamela

Riders is a great dark song by The Doors, but it isnt as dark as the Oedipal part of The End....and neither of those is as dark as singing the "breakfast where the news is read...television children fed...unborn living, living dead, bullet strikes the helmet's head" part of The Unknown Soldier. Imagine those lyrics coming out during the HEIGHT of the Summer of Love and only 3 years into the US involvement in the Vietnam War. Nothing else was that dark at that time...in an era of hippie folk songs and people copying Paul McCartneys love songs in one manner or another. The Unknown Soldier isnt just the darkest Doors song...it was the darkest song of the time.

Honestly to me the doors were greater than the Beatles, but that is my opinion. They were better musicians and lyrically to my ears they were on a level above the Liverpool band. And there are so many references to the occult with their songs, I mean there is the ghost song My wild love No to touch the earth Unknown soldier The intro to the soft parade Riders on the storm to name a few.

There is a weird parallel to be made with the failure of the hippie movement and the darkness of The Doors, one of the quintessential bands of the 60s. It seems they were painfully aware of the shadows lurking under the ideals of peace and love.

Apocalypse Now takes place in 1969 and Riders on the storm came out in 1971. The end came out in 1967.

I like 'Riders on the Storm' better than 'The End' (also a great song tho). But I think 'The End' definitely fits Apocalypse Now way better. The End is a song about pure madness paranoia and anger. The song gets so aggressive in the last few minutes it fits with the chaos and destruction and guerrilla warfare that took place in Vietnam. Whereas Riders on the Storm gives me this unknowing of what is to come vibe but in a calm way.

*Jim Morrison was one of the very few rock lyricists who wrote some poems that could stand alone as poetry without music. It's my understanding that that is what he wanted to do in the last months of his life. If you're interested in his poetry (as opposed to his song lyrics), his work is still available.*

@@TH3F4LC0Nx it may be "low culture" but it captured the zeitgeist of its era and continued to inspire people from latter eras, why would it not be a great work of art? I mean maybe I was over enthusiastic to call it one of the greatest, but it certainly is a great work of art

@@a7mdxxxbohndy Hey, don't get me wrong, it's a pretty sick tune, but I'd say it probably isn't among the Doors' best. Well, actually, I'd still rank it pretty high among their work, but I still think they did better. The Crystal Ship maybe, or Break on Through just because it's catchy as hell.

I saw Ray play once at a poetry reading and he busted out riders on the storm at one point and then went off on a tangent as everyone say silent watching even the poet stopped and watched and I swear he played some shit that was like doors songs you've never heard. Oh man he had some good shit had Jim lived Ray had some great shit to play still

"Girl you gotta love your man" is surely not Jim to a girlfriend, it is clearly, immediately, a message to all women, that women and their love are the necessary ingredient for man and humanity to make their way through this world into which we have been thrown. "The world on you depends." People should really not try to explain poetry. But if they do, it's sad to hear theories to lead people past what has been expressed in a way that I think touches humanity in such a powerful and unambiguous moment.

wildbob absolutely agree with that. Serial killers and seriously maladjusted individuals will site a lack of love nurturing and guidance from their mother. Paternal input is important as well but lacking the female aspect of unconditional love respect and support from the mother figure the individual and thus society as a whole will suffer

@@wilkinsmicawber2996 big agree with you, i think 'mothers turning men into serial killers' story is a total myth. vast majority of them had a long history of abuse by various people (AND ALSO HEAD INJURIES!!!) women and men are all humans, who are social creatures -- we all need each other. but it's not women's role specifically to support and uplift men. that would suck! women want to self-actualise too! men have to support and uplift each other and the women in their lives just as much!

Riders on the Storm was new the summer I worked in a factory that made lamps. The radio was difficult to hear over the noise of the machinery ( I operated a machine that put one screw into each lamp part and then passed it on to the next worker); it was a noisy place. The big garage type doors were behind me and always open. Whenever this song came on over the radio it was hard to tell if a summer storm was beginning or if the sound of thunder was this song on the radio. . The answer would be revealed only when Jim Morrison's voice could be heard just slightly over the sound of the machinery. Atmospheric and memorable; I can still feel this song's presence as I recall those moments.

@@patsfan4life not to touch the earth is more allegorical specially with Christianity themes, the verse "minister daughter is in Love with a snake" might sound like a young woman of certain upbringing might be in Love with Satan. There are other references to mysticism in the songs. Google the meaning of the song and you'd see plenty of references to the mystic.

Patsfan 4life Riders on the storm gives me a very “cool” vibe, and tend to give me a goodbye feeling, like it is time to move on. Those two others tracks, through their instrumentals but also lyrics of despair, mysticism, do give me a dark sentiment. We can really salute the Doors for grasping Jim’s texts so well and really building their own chilling sound
