I agree! I have been looking at reviews for my next bike....and too many of the today are POV videos from start to finish with someone talking at length about the bike....with no accompanying footage of the bike itself, the features focused on or simple cornering or ride shots. Seems like things are headed towards entire videos of the handlebars, the dash and the pavement going by. This was a great review done right! Well done and I subscribed.

I am on my third Yamaha venture since 1986. I had the 86 venture royale, 138,000 miles, I had a 2002 Royal star midnight Venture, 48,000 miles, I just picked up a 30 K mile 2008 totally stock royal star venture in 2021.. I was looking to buy a 2018 venture, but the local dealer said that you had to pre-order. I stopped in there a few times, and they never had one on the floor. I have never even seen one in person here in 2022. Still waiting to see one. i’m glad I have not seen one after reading about the heat on the left leg issue due to the exhaust pipe being close. there’s one thing I cannot tolerate is heat pouring off of the radiator or the engine onto me. I had a Honda 800 saber 1985 that was an oven. I didn’t keep that bike more than a few months, I test drove the Kawasaki concourse, the Yamaha FJR, and the Honda ST 1300. The ST 1300 was the worst for heat. I mean, I do not understand how anyone could ride one of those things above 60° in temperature. vicious heat. I ended up buying a moto guzzi norge instead.. fabulous machine. The heat was no issue unless I was stopped at a long red light on a day above 80°, but still my bad.. anyway, the new 2018, 19, 20, 21V twin ventures I am reading in reviews on KZfaq, really pour out the BTUs on to the left thigh. One guy said he ended up going to the hospital with heat blisters down in Texas.. that was a review of the 2018 model. Maybe they have done a fix for the heat issue. I am still waiting for the Suzuki Goldwing like machine they are developing with air conditioning that has small plug-in ducts that circulate air through the accessory air conditioning jacket..That machine was supposed to be released by 2019 here in the United States. But I suppose the virus has put a hold on that, like it did on everything else

This bike is proof that harley davidson is not a game changer with their M8. YaMaha had been a game changer for years, harley davidson is a loyalty brand and only changes when their forced, but when they do change its big and welcome for those who ride a harley davidson. I had a yamaha road star 102ci from 2005 to 2012 and i had no problems with the bike and i had over 40k miles on it before i switched to harleys in 2013 and just recently updated to the harley M8. Even with the switch i will never down talk yamaha because they bike ran just as good or better than the harley of the day.

@@yazziet6009 I’ve had my new 2018 for about a year now. In my post above 3 years ago I had just bought a 2017 Street Glide and then as fate would have it Yamaha came out with the new Venture 3 months after I had bought the Harley. Well I bided my time and waited for the Harley to get right side up and wound up trading it in on the Venture for a greatly discounted $19,995 otd with a 4 year extended warranty. It’s quite a contrast to the 2nd gen Venture which I loved and rode for 10 years but this new Transcontinental Venture is something else. My Harley buddies were always amazed at how quick the “little“ 1300cc V-4 actually was, lol. A true “little” wolf in sheep’s clothing I use to say lol.

I think this is a great looking bike, and Yamaha/Star quality is always at the top. I have a Vicory Cross Country which is a good bike and very nimble and since I ride solo this is the class I am in. I would think in a year or two Yamaha would take this platform into a Street Glide set up thus shedding a hundred lbs or more and I would be a buyer. Very nice review.

Adam, you have smacked another one right out of the park. For starters, the visuals are stunning. Looks like they picked an incredible route to ride. And I really enjoy how you are breaking this bike down into different phases. So first things first - the build quality looks to be top notch. Not one seam is out of place, the bar controls look like they are easy to reach and use, everything just looks well done and well thought out. That big wind screen is impressive, and the fact that it's electronically adjustable is great. Did you have it all the way up, and did you get any of that pushing sensation from the vortices? That was one gripe I had with my Vision, and it would only do it when the shield was all the way up. A Ness flip took care of that, so I am curious about that. And I love the air management treatments that they have put on. Again, it speaks to how well thought out this bike seems to be. I am also encouraged to hear you keep using the word smooooth! This is so good to hear. As my level of maturity rises - ahem! - smooth is starting to mean more to me, and I am glad to hear that this new bike delivers that. But smooth does not need to mean gutless. How did roll-ons at casual cruise feel? A good touring weapon needs to be able to get up and move when you need it to, so I am eager to get your input on the performance aspect of this bike. And handling is a must for me. The Vision in my mind is the best handling heavy I have ever ridden, so I am anxious to see and feel how the Venture stacks up. Also, I love the exhaust note. It sounds really nice and full without being too loud. I do not need or want a loud bike anymore. And comfort? I don't even think we need to talk about that; this bike looks extremely comfortable. I feel myself wanting to test this bike even more now. The one thing that needs to resolve itself for me is how am I going to handle the weight. Being a Vision pilot I am certainly used to handling a heavy bike, and I have to decide whether or not I want to trade my heavy for another heavy! Looking forward to part 3.

What's up Dennis - always nice to hear from you. Glad you dug it and thanks for taking the time to point out your likes. The windscreen in the upper most position shields you from the effects of the road well. If you move the air louvers it gets even more quiet and stable inside the cockpit. But it can also get a bit toasty with that still air. Would be good for cold weather rides no doubt. Roll on power wasn't anything fast or anything -- but it was purposeful - folks that purchase this bike will dig its powerband. Nice and mellow.

This bike is a HUGE miss! Go ride one yourself. The gas tank is way too wide and not comfortable on your legs. The engine heat is brutal. I mean brutal, and it heats up the tank to the point that after sitting at a stoplight for 2 minutes in 90 degree weather, I couldn't touch the tank with my leg. The engine power was actually disappointing, too. Very smooth? Absolutely. Powerful? Torquey? No way. Very disappointed after spending about 20 minutes on it. I was seriously looking forward to this release, but I'm moving on.

Other than the electric gadgets for "infotainment" or backing the bike around, this bike is no better (and lots more expensive) than the Victory Vision. Polaris flunked the motorcycle marketing tests with Victory. They had something special but instead decided to follow behind HD. The Victory Visions were designed way ahead of this Yamaha, by Americans, built by Americans.
@AdamWaheed
@AdamWaheed 7 жыл бұрын
Are you insane? The Victory Vision was a neat bike, and a real head turner, but the reality is: it was a big pile of junk. It was also only $1800 less expensive than the current base Star Venture, and that was six years ago! There is no comparison between the Star Venture and the Vision. You're comparing a Ford Pinto to a BMW 7-series. I do agree with you though; the Vision was a great concept - Sure it had some squawks, but I still liked riding it. It sold pretty well too for a while.

Another thing that plagues this class of bikes is heat. Would be interested to hear how it compares to others in the class. On a plus side, while it does look a bit like an 80s Buick at least they didn't put some idiotic trendy handlebars on it. One thing I'm a little confused about is at one point Adam says "you know how the power pulses feel and this has it," but then says "smooth smooth smooth" everywhere else. So does it feel like more a counterbalanced twin or more like an electric bike?

Quite a CHANGE from your typical ride!! Ha Ha Ha !! My First 'big bike ride' was rather eye-opening... and I was surprisingly pleased! I was invited to ride with a friend, on one of his bikes, on a 4 day trip... But even though I have hit the Medicare marker, I still Love the Sport Riding too much to make the permanent change. My 'compromise' is a 'classic' Suzuki Intruder 1400...but I guess the full-dress cruiser is somewhere in my future. And THIS bike will be very much what I will be looking for when that time comes. I LOVE the styling, both front and rear...and would select the RED color choice,

Looks good, but air cooled? I guess that leaves Yamaha something to improve on? Air cooled is fine, as long as you're always moving. It'll be liquid cooled, eventually. I'll wait till then. Nice looks! I still haven't forgot the 2nd gear transmission problem on the old 1200 Ventures. Yamaha knew about the problem and refused to do anything about it. On 2nd thought, I may just give Yamaha the finger, they way they did us.

Very nice review and great video. Living in Phoenix I would like to find out how it does at idle when the temps are at 115 F. My Trophy handles the heat okay fine but my wife's Victory Magnum can get hot on the legs because it is air cooled. I also look forward to you next review.

I would have to say it will bake itself AND you just like any other air-cooled bike so be sure to avoid traffic jams. I can see why they went V-Twin, but there's no reason they couldn't have went liquid-cooled at least ... they definitely have the know-how and technology. Liquid cooling would have gave this engine even more power because they could've bumped up compression higher. Who cares about the extra weight from it, this beast already weighs almost half a ton anyway. Don't forget you'll also be like every other Joe Blow on the road with only 2 color options ... unless you want to rip apart your brand-new bike and pay extra to paint it your favorite color.

Hi Sokodad, Adam is wearing the TCX X-Cube EVO Air Boot. He says he "loves them" and that they are perfect for "riding inside a furnace". They are also comfortable and have a tough, grippy sole which is important in a riding boot. Fit is true-to-size. TCX X-Cube EVO Air Boots: www.jakewilson.com/p/4713/55789/TCX-X-Cube-EVO-Air-Motorcycle-Boots On another note, the gear we wear in motorcycle tests, like this one, is in the description of all of our videos.

I'd agree but there's more to a touring bike. Their '18 model seems to take a few step backwards where the Venture is stepping up with features any bike over 800lbs should have. Only draw back is the power plant but that's a small gripe.

Air-cooled should not be classified as touring.. touring is traveling thousands of miles. Something an air-cooled engine is not built for. Especially on a hot summer day. The engine would heat up so bad

I have a 2017 Road Glide, I love the M8 it’s a fantastic engine but I don’t see the point of having this bike air cooled. HD does air/oil cooled engines for a certain look and feel. Indian is the same. This bike isn’t trying to be classic Americana so why not just have it be a liquid cooled twin? Oil cooling the engine works great but there’s just no reason for it on this bike.

Yamaha, it looks like a beautiful bike, but, Kill the Music and let's take it from the start. Guy walks up to the bike, gives us a 'walk around' commenting on the features, (no music), start the bike from a cold startup, we'd like to hear what it sounds like 'coming alive'. Then, again, (without the music and the coordinated camera angles), strap on a go pro and just drive the bike. Commentary is fine, but give it without the 'sales pitch'. Very Important Now...... Let the bike speak for itself. Thanks.

Yes Fred. 76.9 BHP @ 4500rpm/and 109.4 Torque at the rear wheel. Finally true spec's form a DynoJet dynamometer. How sad. Just absolutely dreadful in this day and age of modern technology and power.. I am so heart brokened. And its not like the HD where you can tweak the hell out of them with stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and crank out some major power. I can't believe that I fell so inlove and followed this bike for sooo long and finally such disappointing news...Ahhhhhhh Thank You Fred Brochu.

These specs are actually good for a touring bike. Low hp, I admit, but the torque is phenomenal and that is what matter. It's the weight that bothers me. Similar HD with liquid cooled head make a bit less TQ but also a bit more HP (80 hp and 105tq at the wheel I think with the new milwaukee 8) But weight at least 60 pound less. Hell, the Goldwing with it's gigantic liquid cooled 6 cylinder is still a bit lighter. And as you said, the HD can be modified like crazy. Currently, you can get a stage 4 M8 from the factory that gives you around 115-120 HP and TQ and you keep the warranty.

Front end looks decent... rear a little to much... navigation system... who cares, you can put a kenwood system on a bike... if I had the dash/fairing room.. I'd have a navigation 7 inch on my bike... I just don't know why you want a vtwin that looks like a goldwing.. no heel toe shifter???

A "new" air cooled motor in 2017? Is Yamaha so desperate as to try to steal a few customers from H-D? The whole motor segment of this video is dedicated to trying to justify the "air cooled" thing. If I wanted a primitive air cooled motor, I'd buy a Harley Davidson that carries a far better resale value. A definite ball drop back step for a company like Yamaha.. Boo

Yeah, I read it. Everything is pinned on the "aesthetics", just like H-D. The pushrods, the fins, the exhaust note. And oh, a 600,000 mile lifespan. Lol, right.. :D In reality, damn near 3 gallons of oil included, the rear cylinder is going to burn out just like the big H-D cruisers due to the lack of cooling from the "air cooled aesthetics". $20k new price, worth $5k three years later. If you're going with an antique design, go with something that the faithful are willing to give new price for 3-5 years down the line..
@RidersDomain
@RidersDomain 7 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Aesthetics and that nostalgic look/feel is what the what the segment/class demands. If you want modern, techie water-cooled designs there are other six-cylinder designs out there. The rear cylinder "burn out" assumption is just that as it applies to this bike. Re-sale value is a funny thing, and there are a number of factors at play, in addition to the machine's quality/durability. Only time will tell if this model can maintain a steady value over time. But based on what we experience during this ride, we won't bet against Yamaha/Star. Thanks for your comment - always good to hear from folks like you and get their take on new motorcycles.

People are stupid. We'll see how many fall for the "Yamaha is better than H-D even with the same flawed design". I'm in no way a H-D (look, feel, attitude, frown clown) fan boy, that's why it's so disgusting to see such a lame attempt to copy from a respected brand like Yamaha..

Sure, that's why I'm considering selling my Electra Glide to buy this Yamaha. Unfortunately, I may not be able to since the bottom has dropped out on HD resale. New HD sales are down 8% and my local market is saturated with used bikes. Looks like I'm stuck with HD for now. Good thing I still like riding it.

Personally I really like the machine but think Star would have been money ahead if they would have named it the Strato Tourer or something.. I have a hunch that using the Venture name to try and draw in touring riders of the past V-4, water cooled, shaft driven Yamaha Ventures as well as disgruntled Harley folks may very well backfire on them.. If your viewers here go to sites like VentureRider.org and read in the 3rd Gen section there of what those folks are saying about this bike (where Star should have gone for input in the first place) they probably would understand my point.. Nice bike but, an air cooled, belt drive touring bike that (quoting Star ads) "is going to turn the touring world upside down"? I was at the unveiling at Lake George and than went and test rode them at Sturgis (see my You Tube video's) and I really think that intent is going to be a long time coming.. Drop the price by 8 grand = maybe.. Just my opinion..

That is a totally ridiculous price for this bike. You can get a Gold Wing or even a BMW K1600 GTL for that price. Either bike destroys this one in EVERY category. Well, except excessive engine heat. If you're looking for that, this bike is for you.

Shame that it's a Harley wannabe. Pity the engine's aesthetics had evolved in reverse. GW's engine "looked" very advanced & to-date, tho such horizontally opposed or evn the other; the 'Boxer' config., provides the low-down center-of-gravity quality, but the blocks' heads get in the way of the feet & the otherwise comftable leg spread position, a hallmark of Harley, what's favored by all & this abuv example has precisely that what's mentioned. This had that comfy ride position, but the engine shudda been a V-triple (a 2 bank/3 cylinder) or V-4, perhaps..? & the all wonderful automatic transmission option (like Honda's DCT, wud be absolutely great).

You said .. "Day 3 & nearly 400 miles" ... You just lost me. I do at least 500 miles per day (some days 1,000 miles) with a severe spine injury on my GL1500 and my wife is right beside me riding her VT750 Shadow Spirit. If that Yamaha is that uncomfortable that I can't toffee it through a full tank of gas .... I'll pass. Thanks, but no thanks. And no need for me to look into this bike any further than the first 30 seconds of your video. You just said allI need to hear. If I'M wrong in My decision ... maybe it's because. YAMAHA needs to rethink who they hire to test their bikes. Apparently, YAMAHA needs to hire real bikers who actually ... wait for it .... RIDE! Myself and my wife would be happy to do it ... and we would actually RIDE them rather than spend all of our time at the local. STARBUCKS. Good for you! YOU LOST Yamaha MORE THAN ONE potential SALE. Having over a million miles on two wheels (on all makes and models) ... I'm pretty well respected in the "real biker" community in my area and across the country, (btw ... so is my bride), and when some biker asks me what I think of this Yamaha ... I'll tell them EXACTLY what you said here. (At least your lead in) ... that you can't bear to ride it through a single tank of fuel. The very sad thing for Yamaha is ... I had a Venture Royale made in three 80s. I LOVED THAT BIKE! So when I saw this one ... I got excited. Unfortunately ... that excitement was destroyed less than 40 seconds into this video. GREAT JOB! GOOD FOR YOU! YAMAHA SHOULD BE PROUD! So .... I won't be buying one of these ... and neither will any other biker I know once I share your initial evaluation with them. Thank you for your professional insight. And THANK YOU so much! You saved me from making a huge mistake. This bike LOOKS GREAT! Most of them do now ... ... However, it obviously will not perform, or be as comfortable and road capable as my needs. Have a great day and .... Ride it like you stole it! (But I sure as hell wouldn't pay money for one.)
