My second attempt of going sub-compact, this time I didn’t give up. And this time I got some Ultegra 12speed Di2 bits to play with. There will be some scales involved, and there might be some descending in there as well.

Great video as always. I haven't had slicks on my gravel bike in a few years now. I find that I'm fine with my Gravel King SK tires for the roads and speeds I ride. The extra comfort and confidence on broken roads along with the ability to explore a little off-road have changed "road-riding" for me. I want to try the SS next to see what they do in the gravel.

Unusual stuff for this channel but my experience will build the gravelking SS tires fame ! I use them (700x35) on a tracklocross bike (48-19 ratio) and they are really awesome ! Amazing skid resistance and good dry off-road performance ! I might actually get another set for my road/CX/gravel Spé Crux

Thank You! I am an Allied Echo owner with 12 speed Ultegra D12 and this is the exact hack I was looking for. What others might not understand is this frameset only works with 12 speed Di2 due to limited wiring and cabling options thus we are stuck with the 12 speed DI2 world if using Shimano for the most part. I will consider the front crankset mod and or keep praying for GRX 12 speed Di2. Peace my brother!

Exactly the same problem here, I tried 46/32 chain rings (extra 2mm offset inward to handle that 32t on Shimano cranks). The 2mm offset is not that bad, but the FD not low enough is a problem, causing chain drop and poor FD shifting performance. But that 46/32 chainring combined with 11/34 cassette provide some super awesome ratio. Although finally I go 38t + 11/40 M8000 cassette (with RX817 RD), despite the extra noise on that 40t cog, it's mostly fine. Now my desire for that super compact chainring is brought back!

I approve of subcompact gearing. I run a 48-32 up front and initially an 11-34 out back. I found I wasn’t using the 11 much at all so when it was time for a new cassette I got a 12-36. Can’t say I’m disappointed. The times I’m spun out I wouldn’t want to go faster anyways because I wouldn’t have enough time to brake before flying off a mountain. Plus I get a lower gear for climbing up anything I want basically. Subcompact is the way to go for most riders imo especially if you ride gravel.
@mattkavanaugh5623
@mattkavanaugh5623 2 жыл бұрын
I run 48-31 GRX cranks with 11-36 cassette, and GRX RD. Works great. I did have an 11-42 cassette but that was overreaching the RD's capabilities... though the 31/42 ratio for climbing was almost like MTB gearing :)
@swe223
@swe223 2 жыл бұрын
Adapt the gearing to your use and riding conditions. I often ride a TT bike with 1x 54t or 56t chainring, but I've gone as far as 42/28 and 11-36 on my gravel/bikepacking bike. Pretty good for long steep gravel climbs (endurance Z2) , perfect alignement when riding on the flat at ~30-35km/h. On the descents I spin out at 50km/h but when bikepacking, I prefer to rest anyway instead of pushing and wasting energy. So bigger doesn't really make any sense for that use.
@andrep4435
@andrep4435 Жыл бұрын
@@swe223 hey, how did you get to the 42/28. I’ve been thinking about doing something similar, looking at white industry’s crank set, for my gravel bike. Would be interested to know what components you used?
@swe223
@swe223 Жыл бұрын
@@andrep4435 My Gravel bike (Kona Sutra LTD) uses a MTB Bottom Bracket so it was a little bit easier for me. For example, I can use an XTR M980 crank which comes in 44-30 or 42-28, or any MTB crankset in 104/64 BCD and adapt any chainring on them. Personally I mounted Osymetric chainrings because I love them. With a road BB however it's hard to go below 30 because of the bigger BCD but it should still be good enough. For example GRX (46/30 natively with smaller BCD) or Absolute Black who makes 46/30 chainrings that go on 110BCD. But you can still compensate in the back with something like an XTR 11s 11-40.

Your my favourite presenter👍I know you are a Shimano fan boy. I have 2 11 speed Shimano Ultegra bikes, but this year I was building a new bike ( Argon 18, Krypton Pro) so in reviewing groupsets ( I live in a hilly area and am an olderr rider) I decided to go Sram Axs as I could get a 43/30 with a 12 speed 10/36. One 1 of my Shimanos I use Standard compact and an 11/34 and on the other one I use a standard compact with an 11/40. Shimano is back in the dark (racing) ages when it comes to road groupsets and I am fed up with constantly fiddling to get the gearing I need.

Last question - I’m running the same crank and chainrings and it has a tendency in the small ring to such the chain between the frame and the chainring. Wondering if you had any other tips or tricks to set up the Ultegra front mech with the Easton crank and chainrings?

How is that Easton crank working, is it a 11 or 12 speed and does it creek or is just doing it's job?

No problems in either 11 or 12 speed. The Crank itself should never creak unless something is seriously wrong.

Currently trying to get lighter gears on my gravel bike with Shimano 12-speed di2 groupset. I’m a bit lost with what components I can mix and match. Found a 110bcd 46/30 chainring from Bikingreen that would solve the gearing issue but then I’d still have a rear derailleur without clutch. Would you happen to know if a 12-speed XT di2 derailleur would work with my setup? Thanks in advance for your reply!
@ridesofjapan

To my knowlege there’s no 12speed di2 clutch derailleur that work with the wireless 12speed shifters. The only one Shimano makes at the moment is e-bike specific one, and from what I’ve gathered it’s not compatible. I’m eagerly awaiting GRX 12speed di2 rumors for this year.

@@ridesofjapan A GRX 12-speed di2 would be the perfect solution… hopefully they will release it this year. For now settled on a 49/33 chainring that was readily available, paired with the 11-36 cassette that got released with the 105 groupset. Should get me up most mountains. Hopefully the gravel is smooth enough to not throw my chain off without a clutch 😅

Why don't frame manufacturers just make a mounting bracket that accommodates sizes from 28-60? I have the same problem with trying to fit a 58-tooth chainring on my time trial bike.

It being Di2 and disc brake only made me switch irrevocably to Campagnolo :( aside from the crankset, the 48/31 GRX being just perfect for my gearing needs

@11robotics wrote: "switch to Campagnolo ... aside from ... 48/31 GRX crankset". I would love something like this. What is your exact setup, 11 or 12 speed RD? Do you use a GRX FD with Campy shifter? Or Campy FD? How reliable is the front shifting?
@11robotics
@11robotics 9 ай бұрын
@@j18ter here's my setup: Campagnolo Centaur 11 levers and rear derailleur, Campagnolo Chorus 11 front derailleur (had a Centaur 11 before, the Chorus 11 is like 15g lighter and 100% compatible), Shimano GRX FC-RX810-2 crankset (originally with 48/31 chainrings, now with Specialités TA 46/30 chainrings), Campagnolo Potenza 11-32 cassette, Campagnolo Potenza chain. It shifts perfectly well in the front, with either the Centaur 11 or the Chorus 11 FD and with either the 48/31 original chainrings or the 46/30 Specialités TA ones. One minor issue though: the larger chainline of the GRX chainset compared to the standard road double chainline. Even though it shifts perfectly fine, the chainrings being 2.5-3 mm further out than they're supposed to be means that the chain is noisier when you use the large chainring with the largest 3-4 sprockets. The Campagnolo chain is also noisier in this scenario than the Shimano ones, which is why I will soon switch back to Shimano Ultegra cassettes and Shimano chains. With this setup, the chain is only slightly noisy when on the largest chainring and the two largest sprockets, which I seldom/never use as gear ratios anyway. Also, if you have a braze-on front derailleur, make sure it can slide down low enough to accomodate the 48 or 46 chainrings. Some frames don't allow you to go lower than the position for a 50 chainring. Mine has a round seat tube and a clamp mount, so I had no issue in setting the front derailleur at the correct height.

@@11robotics, the quick and very detailed reply is much appreciated. I'll have to think this over. The chain line issue is a good point (and to a lesser extent Q factor as well). I've considered the Rene Herse cranks for this very reason. They claim compatibility with Campy, even 12 speed. The required square taper BB is a little unorthodox for a modern bike, but maybe not out of place for my steel bike. Lowering the FD should not be difficult, as it's mounted with a clamp like yours.

@@j18ter you're welcome! You may also want to consider the 12-speed Chorus 48/32 crankset. I nearly bought it twice, but decided to stick to the GRX one so I can have access to decently priced chainrings. The GRX is a really versatile crankset for what it's worth, there are even 44/28 chainrings from Specialités TA for it if such a need should arise, and the default 48/31 gear combo is largely sufficient for typical road bike use cases.

Do you feel any difference running a 11 speed crankset with otherwise 12 speed components? I am upgrading to 12 Speed Shimano but want to use my r8000 cranks.

I can't speak for all cranksets, but once setup they preform to my expectations. I does take some tinkering to set up the front shifting though.. a bit more trail and error compared to 11speed. Will it preform just as good as a native 12speed shimano crankset? probably not... but you can get it pretty close.

Ok, I’ll be the estupido one and ask, is this completely fine, being an 11 speed chainring / crankset within a 12 speed dura ace setup? Most particularly not asking for a friend, asking for my own personal benefit. 😅

Unfortunately is hard to give a general answer that will cover all 11speed chainrings. But I’d say that most 2x 11speed chainrings will work fine with Shimano 12speed chains. However, 11speed 1x narrow-wide chainrings will generally NOT work with Shimano 12speed chain, as is the case with the Easton 1x 11speed chainrings.
