I remember this one local place in my home town called the Wheels Inn and wow...that arcade atmosphere was just awesome. Why is 1993 graphics better than psx in 1994? So people knew how to draw proper 3d. Just Sony was cheap?

Ridge Racer is far superior to Daytona. No contest

The Arcade version of Ridge Racer had lines behind it. Ridge Racer needed constant maintenance from the abuse of getting the fastest lap times. Daytona had a dinky 4 speed dash shifter that immediately ruined the experience. Ridge Racer had several different styles of shifter going on, all located where they would be in a real car.

@@somethingoriginal1707 Daytona's official release was in 1994. So it has an advantage over RR, which is really running on 1992 hardware. Again, it shouldn't matter because the System 22 and Model 2 were incredibly advanced for their time.

No. RR1 and RR2 in the arcade can only be played from bumper view.

Any recent version of MAME should work. I used 0.211. No samples are needed.

I downloaded MAME and a romset a couple of weeks ago and this runs perfectly on an old Dell core duo PC that I'm using for Launchbox.

@@arronmunroe Yo, can you explain how you map the controls to a joypad??? There's SOOO MANY controls in the menu I have no clue what is what. I'm also using it on the Mac and when I get in, it drives automatically without me having to press on the gas.

@@CJTranceAddiction For the steering wheel, I would just press a direction on the joystick for "steering wheel analog", but not the ones called "inc or dec". On the other hand, for the gas pedal or brakes, I would suggest mapping a button to just "inc" for both of them while disabling the regular analog. The shoulder triggers on my controller usually have difficulty when set as analog the normal way, but you could set it differently if you're able to get it working. Keep in mind that setting it the way I suggest makes it so you can't partially hold down the brake or the accelerator.

@@arronmunroe This is so confusing, man...yeah I got the analog working on my PS3 controller but I have to press the analog stick up in order to drive forward. Basically the analog also acts as the gas pedal wtf??? Also, there's like P1 Pedal 1 Analog Inc and Paddle Analog Inc.....

They had one in the Trocadero in London up until about 2002 I think. The car was a red/dark orange Mazda MX5 if I'm not mistaken. Cost 5 quid to have a go though... absolute madness. And there was an attendant standing next to it at all times (to explain how it worked and, I imagine, to keep people from damaging the car)

Listen, this is the game that when you walked into an arcade (something that absolutely IS lost on today's generation and would never understand) your eyes lit up and were immediately drawn to it. This is the game the launched what is now the powerhouse Playstation brand. When this was revealed to be a game that you could play in your home, then that was it, and that's history. So, he's absolutely correct when he says you have to be in a particular club i.e old enough, to understand the impact this game had then, and now.

I hadn't used that Retroarch core, but I verified that the same issue shows up in MAME 0.136. MAME 2010 core is from MAME version 0.139, so it's pretty old. I would imagine that the regular MAME core wouldn't have that problem.

That was only 14 hours ago. I can't always respond right away, although I have sometimes missed comments. That wasn't one of them, though. About that game, it's not really one that I would want to play. Not for now, at least.

The emulator MAME can be used to play this on PC.

I believe that's just an emulation problem, not how it actually looked in arcades.

The only 4K part of it is the pixel count of this upload, though I think it's also for minimizing the video compression artifacts. By the looks of it, I'd say the actual resolution the game is being displayed at is more like 640x480 or 1024×768. Definitely there's no anti-aliasing going on, but then again, it'd be fair to assume that the arcade machine the game was run on in 1993, used a CRT screen that most likely smoothed out "the staircase effect" we can now see on modern screens.

@@gilotovlog8703 This game does run at 640x480. I think it would be cool to play this game in true 4K, but unfortunately, the official version of MAME will never support a feature like that.

@@MegaFCKforever Yeahh, ALL of them...R4, R5 and Rage Racer (R3) hell yesss. Too bad so few truly appreciate this amazing series. Most don't get it. The dynamics and the feeling you get from RR games is unlike any other driving game I have played.

Because it was an early/launch game. R4 included a bonus disc with the original PS1 version running at 60fps to demonstrate advancements in their development skills.

ps1 was a lot cheaper than the ridge racer cabinet so it can be bought by average consumer. so thats why its 30 fps on the playstation, and it was also a launch title so not much they could do
