Ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous redfish action right now

Try to target any species you want right now in the marshes east of the Mississippi River, and you'll probably catch those fish. What you're also sure to land, however, are more redfish than you've ever seen in your life.
The fishing is incredibly good right now, bordering on the absurd. You'll still catch the usual amount of fish at the upper end and even over the 16- to 27-inch slot limit, but you'll be unable to escape a ridiculous number of fish between 15 and 18 inches.
Marsh Man Masson got in on the spectacular action this week during a trip with his longtime fishing buddy, Larry Frey of Metairie, La., as well as his usual sidekick -- his son, Joel.
They were targeting the remainder of inshore speckled trout that are hanging out in deep holes, feasting on young-of-the-year croakers, but they caught more reds than anything. Combined, Frey and Marsh Man have been fishing the marshes of South Louisiana for nearly a century, and neither has seen redfish action like this.
The anglers threw nothing but soft-plastic lures, including Salt Water Assassins (chartreuse curl-tail) and Matrix Shads (holy joely and midnight mullet), and the action was interrupted only when the tide transitioned from a fall to a rise.
Like the video? Please give it a thumbs-up, and be sure to subscribe to the Marsh Man Masson channel on KZfaq. Also, please leave a comment below. Are you catching copious amounts of reds where you're fishing?

Pretty new to fishing and have read about the late push of specks out to spawn and deeper water in the prime summer months. So that being said, I fish a lot in the rigolets area and the grand pass side of the Biloxi marsh. So is that part of the marsh far enough out in June and July to try to catch specks or does it die off around that time and need to target reds more? Thanks I really have learned a lot from your videos.

Depends on the year. The Pearl has been high the last four or five years, so that's really messed up summertime speck fishing in those areas. If you don't have a bay boat, you probably want to stick with reds this summer.

Marsh Man Masson yeah I have a 20’ aluminum excel bay boat so any suggestions would be appreciated. Not spots just areas. I don’t mind taking a drive south if need be. Just prefer specks over reds

Love the videos. Also fish a brackish system west of hackberry! Reds and flounder mostly with some bass. Would love to see a flounder show! Like the new videos coming weekly, feels like I’m also fishing!

Man, our flounder fishing in Southeast Louisiana has gotten brutally tough. Not sure what has happened. We caught plenty three years ago, but they've been almost non-existent the last two years. Maybe the redfish ate them all lol

Great video Todd. The info you give is very helpful. What is your impression of the new Shimano Curado so far? I have seen you using it for a little while now.

Yes, I got it about a month ago. It's a Curado K with a 7.4:1 retrieve. So far, I'm really pleased with the reel.

It has been the same in Myrtle Grove with small reds a few weeks ago. I went last week and this time it was about 50/50 illegal to keepers. By far my favorite fish to target is Specks. I understand you said they leave the inside waters during Summer. Does that mean they strictly go into the Gulf or just not inside canals and can still have keepers in Lakes and Bays. I ask this because I do catch them off and between islands in Empire for example, off the main channel but not in big numbers. And I see all of the bigger boats fly by me heading out to the Empire Jetty and Rigs. If its calm I try to go there and stay on the backside portion of the Jetty. My boat isn't big enough to handle those waves on the outside.I've only tried it 2 or 3 times and didn't catch much at all. On another video you said you hate Summer and dont target Specks until Fall. Can you please explain how you would target Specks in a smaller boat in the Summer? Is it just that some have stayed closer in from the Gulf or that they weren't mature enough to leave yet? Thanks Todd, Great video as usual!

Mature trout head outside to the big bays and Gulf to spawn this time of year, and remain there until September. What we're catching inside now are the stragglers. During the heart of summer, the only fish available inside are immature juveniles. Some of these fish will exceed the 12-inch minimum, but most are undersized. I abandon trout in the summertime because I don't like long runs, and I abhor fishing with live bait. I turn my attention to bass and reds that time of year.

Dear Mr. Masson, I don't want to know where you fish(ha ha)I would be interested on a video for kayak fisherman. The reason is that kayak fisherman don't go as far as fisherman with a motorboat, and places to launch besides the regular launches. Thanks Charlie Mutter

Also do you use Fluorocarbon leader or just regular Fluoro line that you would fill a reel with ? Still learning about Fluorocarbon line. Thanks !!

you're killing me man, I usually trout fish from sunrise till work in the spring but they closed the trout season til June 15 in nc where I'm at because of the freeze die offs we had this winter. by then the spring bite is long gone. . .

Hopefully the fish will rebound quickly. It doesn't take speckled trout long to bounce back. Does NC still allow gill-netting?

by the way, one time I was trout fishing and just could not get a hit on my jig for hours. decided to start catching small croaker for bait between 3 and 6 inches. turns out we were surrounded by bucket mouth trout everywhere. some of these trout went after some big croaker they could barely swallow, some eating croaker have their size

Marsh Man Masson in the marsh by the mouth of the bayou. I've been wanting to try some bass/redfish but I don't know anyone who fishes there to know if it's worth it or not.

The reds are everywhere because we have none in Tampa! A lot of charter captains here are saying we have a redfish famine. It's very strange.

In my opion its kinda rude to ask about spots you catch fish it should be earned with experience

I don't mind people asking, but I'd rather teach people how to fish than point to a spot on a map. The former is much more beneficial than the latter.

Well, I'm always will to let someone teach me the finer points of fishing… I can catch fish, but if I was shown what to look for during certain times of the year, that would help me greatly… I do all my fishing around Big Lake, mainly because of location… Give me a holler if you ever go that direction…
