So glad Lance made this list! Loved Storm's gimmick, Henry Rollins look and great ring ability. I am a little surprised that Raven's Flock didn't make this list. I know the flock may have been an obstacle to the indie legend that was Raven when it comes to his actual ring participation but their look was unmistakably 90s and Kidman and Saturn were shining lights in the stable.

For everyone that loves the Razor Ramon gimmick for Scott Hall, take a look back as Hall played a near identical character in the form of the Diamond Studd, managed by DDP. His finisher, move set, promos, and overall character were in WCW but unfortunately the people at the top didn't see anything in him. That is the same story for Taker, Austin and all the other young talent they let go in the early 90's.
@Henderson1011
@Henderson1011 Жыл бұрын
Austin actually played a large role in WCW. He was let go because Bischoff saw him as injury prone, which wasn't really wrong. Though he was wrong in that he didn't see Austin as marketable. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

Malenko wasn't the first to have the 1000 holds gimmick, but it fit his submission based style to a Tee. Making him the Iceman was also a good idea given he just couldn't channel a promo on camera (he had a very dry sense of humor backstage) so they told the fans he had that cold and serious all business demeanor when it came to wrestling. Reminds me of when Benoit would rub his hands together during promos in ECW and in a few WCW. Good stuff.

Glad to see Mortis on this list, I've gained a new appreciation for him and Wrath with the Reliving the War Series. I have to say the Lord Stephen Regal character was one of my favorites when I was at the height of my wrestling fandom, it wasn't so much the outfit for me, but his theme music. His theme made the character and tied it all together, I definitely think if Mr. Matthews had been a wrestler back in the 50s through to the 1970s, he would've been one of the great heels of his generation, thankfully we got him during mine and he indeed is one of the great heel wrestlers of the 1990s through the other 2000s. He is another case of WCW not knowing exactly what they had, and we can name at least five of those examples very easily. But he was truly one of my favorite heels to hate but you could not deny how unique his wrestling style was, and definitely got me interested in wrestling, going back to the 70s through the 40s. I thank him for being yet another character in the tapestry that was professional wrestling, especially pre-attitude.

Very good list, as usual. Love that you included Regal here. His gimmick was perfect for his straight-up mat wrestling style. The one person I'm surprised you didn't include here was 1998 Jericho. That might be my all-time favorite version of Jericho. Such a great promo guy and a fantastic heat magnet. nWo Konnan was also really good. He was so bland in 1996, then over the course of two years he transforms into one of the top guys in the company in terms of getting really good crowd pops.

I think he was playing both sides, both kayfabe and in reality, and did it brilliantly. I think he did it because he knew his ankle wasn’t going to ever be the same, and he was a speed/quickness guy, not a power guy. Austin was able to transform from a technician into a brawler after his neck injury, but he had some size on Brian.

@@zlinedavid According to friends, Brian was surprised who could not get a guarantee to return to WCW, and even when he did not he still wanted to go to back to WCW, but was talked out of it. It might feel like he was playing both sides, and we can't ever know what was in his mind, but this is what people close to him said. Playing both sides makes a good story, it matches the character he played, but that doesn't make it true.

Brian Pillman was just so good. One of the first wrestling action figures I got as a kid was of him. I loved his “unhinged” character and as an adult I’ve grown to really appreciate his in ring work and his promos. His passing was so sad. I was a very young fan new to wrestling in general and a guy I just got into dying was a shock. I also was a massive Sting fan during the “crow” era. I loved the whole dark hero thing. I had a Sting tape that I watched over and over. I was also really into Mysterio and Benoit as a young WCW fan. They were super captivating to watch even for a kid who didn’t really appreciate or understand the nuances of in-ring work. Nash is a guy I gravitated towards too, especially during the Wolfpack run before the finger poke. He had a “cool” factor about him. I didn’t really appreciate Scott Hall until I went back and watched Razor Ramon. Now, I’m a bigger Hall fan. Lance Storm in WCW was absolutely fantastic. One of the few bright spots during the dying days of the company. Booker T was a guy I was always behind in WCW. I rooted for him every time. I was super happy when he finally won the world title.

I was a big fan of Glacier and didn't like Mortis, lol. Also, much as I dislike the real life guy, Disco Inferno was a good mid card gimmick. He stood out as so egotistical that he didn't realize he was behind the times. I was also a big fan of Alex Wright (pre Berlin) simple look, simple dance, great wrestler. Really enjoyed your list! 😎👍💯

I remember seeing Super Invader when watching WCW Worldwide in maybe 92 or 93 and thinking "wow he's even bigger than Big Van Vadder!" I was about 10 years old and I believed he would be something. Turns out he just did a few squash matches and went away, but 10 year old me was picking my jaw of the floor.

Cactus Jack is my all time favorite WCW gimmick. 'Crazy' characters had been done a hundred times before, but Foley perfected it and gave the character a level of intelligence and sympathy you just didn't see in those days. Some of the storyline shenanigans he was dealt (debuting in a present or the amnesia stuff being prime examples) would have sunk lesser talents. Instead the character became legendary.

That original crow sting was arguably the greatest character ever. Scott Hall is a freaking genius.

So glad you mentioned Mortis, Regal and Storm. I enjoyed all 3 characters back in the day and they were great in the ring as well. Better than some of main guys for sure eh “brother “. 😂😂

I always got a kick out of Ernest "The Cat" Miller once he turned heel and became a cross between James Brown and Muhammad Ali.

That was great. The Cat was such a heat magnet, but as you said, he was what happened if the Godfather of Soul mixed with Ali. He was very entertaining, especially as the commissioner. "I'll tell you what, Scott Steiner, you want a match tonight? Ima give you a match tonight! I'm a give you Goldberg!"

I remember being a teenager at WCW events during 97 and 98. My and whoever I was with would be watching the rafters the whole time looking for Sting. It was an exciting time. One of the coolest times of my life.

What you said about Mortis, "Kanyon" was exactly how I felt back then when he debuted. He just looked damn cool and could back up everything in the ring. So much more could've been done with that gimmick and worked. Much love to Kanyon. RIP

I loved most of those, especially Sting. Crow Sting got me into wrestling. Loved Regal, Mortis, nWo, and Lance. But I’d have to include La Parka, Eddie Guerrero, Chavo w/ Pepe, Raven, and Saturn.

I think Eric Bischoff as a character was an amazing gimmick. The smarmy "owner" of the company with the used car salesman smile. He fit the role so well.

3 Count were one of the few bright spots in the dying days of WCW. All solid workers and for once, wrestling created a gimmick that was timely rather than 5 years behind the times. Had they been in WWE, they would've gotten over huge in the same way Too Cool did and would've been great mixing it up with the Hardyz, Dudleyz and E&C. Unfortunately they were in a company on life support.

Love your take on Mortis. I did really enjoy what he was doin with Raven for a while. But who better than Kanyon?! I always liked him best as "himself". Guy was an amazing performer in the ring and on a mic. Heartbreaking that he left the world so early.

It's not exactly a gimmick, but one thing I loved about WCW over WWF back then was the fact that they gave a lot more air time to the smaller guys and the Luchadors especially. I had as much fun watching Konan, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Milenko, and them as I did watching Sting and Hogan and the guys at the top of the card. I also loved Disco Inferno and Harlem Heat.
