In September 1998, Norfolk Southern operated its track geometry train over the steepest mainline railroad grade in North America, Saluda, in North Carolina. With an average gradient of 4.7%, the "Mountain of Challenge" was a daily operating obstacle since most freight trains running down it exceeded 10,000 tons.

10/7/1998 I was promoted to RFE to the Asheville District. Saluda was one half of my duties.

I was in 8th grade when this was recorded. I remember stuff like the 1998 Corvette being a pace car (purple, I think) and people being worried about the millenium bug. It doesn't feel like it was THAT long ago. The difference in video quality tells me that yes, it was that long ago. Thanks for sharing!

Where I railfan in Rural Retreat VA in Southwestern Virginia, 1998 was the year they built the siding (Control Point Duncan and Crockett) that is 10K feet long which would be a mile long, but the trains would often use that siding and Glade Spring which is the longest siding on that line compared to Radford and along with its rail yard!

Reminds me somewhat of the Southern Railway - Saluda Grade Training Video that I saw elsewhere on KZfaq. It's good to have saved all these videos because Saluda grade will never be reopened as it wouldn't be economic to do so. Thank you for your efforts.

Good thing they did abandon that line that is one dangerous piece of railroad i hate to say it but that line should have never been built
