Over the next month, we will be traveling from New York to Washington DC. This is Amtrak's busiest railway corridor, but it is also served by different state-run commuter rail systems. We will be riding commuter rail from New York to Philadelphia and from Baltimore to DC.
In this first instalment, we will be hopping aboard a New Jersey Transit train on the Northeast Corridor Line (named after, well, the Northeast Corridor) and riding it in its entirety from New York Penn Station down to Trenton, NJ. Our train is a Bombardier Multi-Level, and it skips all stops between Newark Airport and New Brunswick. Is this train worth the price of a ticket? Find out!

Best commuter train in america. I cannot tell you how much i relied on this for interns, college and just getting to new york and my home town(Edison). I love NJ because its the only state in america where you can live both in car dependent suburbia and dense walkable place.

NJT does have bathrooms in their trains (there's usually 2 in every consist), you just have to keep walking to the next car until you find one with a bathroom. Also, there are technically 2 power outlets in each train, they're just located under the flip up seats under the longitudinal seating section at the end of the cars.

12:29 I really wish the MBTA had trains like these, at the moment only the cab cars have open spaces like that, usually half of it is taken up by electrical equipment or a bathroom which makes bringing a bike onboard sometimes difficult. We also don’t have electric doors between train cars, and we don’t have special high level only boarding doors. The single levels we have don’t even have electronic doors, they’re manually operated.

That's the cleanest looking window I've seen in a while if I'm being honest. Every time I ride the NJT commuter rail, the windows are so dirty you can't even see much when looking out. One thing I like about these multilevel cars is that they're silent. They're quieter than the comet railcars. I'm not sure if you ever rode on them before. Another thing I wanna say, I don't think I've ever seen the NEC train this empty in my life. This line stays jammed packed, especially the trains to NY Penn Station. Great video.

@@Thom-TRA Haha yes, your stress is gone now that I gave feedback on this vid. On a serious note, I'll be looking forward to seeing the video where you traveled down the NEC. Not to mention, I believe there's a bus that can take you from Newark station in Delaware to Perryville station in Maryland, but I'm unaware of the departure time. Thought I'd just mention it anyway.

fun fact: you can actually buy 1 straight ticket from New York to Philly on NJT and SEPTA will honor that ticket and they have special fare gates at the Center City stations that allow you to tap your NJT or Amtrak tickets on them.

Another very informative & detailed upload Thom. I really like how you explain everything so clearly for us 'out of towners'. Grand Central Station is truly 'grand' & impressive. I also like that all three of you travel together - as they say 'the family that travels together stays together' LOL, Although it appeared that you did have the Penn Station entrance doors slammed in your face by Lindsey & Bear seemed to be giving you the "Bear Stare". It made for a very enjoyable upload, as always, to watch. Thank you for sharing.

6:08 The Bombardier 3000 series multilevels actually do have two power outlets per car located behind the seats on the 4-seat group on the lower levels. There is also one in the washroom in the cab car. If you're lucky enough to get a 4-seat on the lower level, you can find it behind your seat. (note: this is true on the commuter trains in Montreal, Canada operated by EXO, which use the same bombardier 3000 series cars, this may not be the case for NJ Transit.)

I have been fanning Northeast Corridor a lot this year. The Penn Station Access project has broke ground recently and I have been following along with it in order to create a video based out of it. The New Haven Line will eventually have a second branch into Penn Station (currently it only terminates at Grand Central Terminal) along Amtrak's Hell Gate Line, as well as four new stations in various parts of the Bronx. Amtrak and MTA are currently rehabilitating the existing infrastructure along the Hell Gate Line to make it more compatible with the M8's. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

I've rode on this route before (not the express version, though), but not exactly by choice. I had taken Amtrak from Buffalo, NY with the plan to pick up another Amtrak train at Penn Station to go the rest of the way to Trenton, where I would then meet up with my younger brother and his wife to take the RiverLine the rest of the way. Unfortunately, got held up halfway through New York, missed my Amtrak connection by mere minutes, panicked, and bought an NJ Transit ticket for the second leg. Hopefully someday soon I can take this trip again and actually be able to enjoy it

I had the same in Chicago not too long ago. Was on the Empire Builder and missed the train to Michigan by seconds due to delays. I’m glad you at least had NJ Transit to get you there, I hope you get to have fun riding it soon. Btw, how is the River Line? I’ve always wanted to ride it.

New Jersey transit had bathroom. The reason why you probably don’t know about it maybe Curt is been blocked off by the conductor for security. Also, the ticket price is high because you’re crossing the state line like paying a fee to use the tunnel. I’ve been trying to figure this out when I am on the north jersey coast line to north east corner or any other line.

The Hawker Siddeley bi-levels originated in the 1970s before FRA mandated trains had to be heavy steel. Designed for Go Transit in Toronto with only low level platforms, no height or length restrrictions. (length of car has inpact for tight curves in a tunnel). (Hawker Siddeley canada merged with UTDC which was eventually purchased by Bombardier which was purchased by Alstom (except for the Bombardier trademark which remains with nearly bankrupt remains of the former company). The Multi-Levels were ordered by NJ Transit with an add on join order from EXO in Montréal and designed to fit both the Penn station tunnel as well as the former Mont Royal Tunnel in Montréal. The cars are shorter to handle some of the curves (mandated by NJ Transit). There is a bathroom in the cab car. But due to the need for high capacity, putting a bathroom in each car would remove too much capacity. lak of plugs ios just cheap design, but NJ Transitr woudl have data on average journey time (not everyone does Trenton-Manhattan). One big advantage of the Multi-Levels is that it has 4 doors on each car, with the end doors in vestibule able to handle both high level and low level platforms. The EXO version doesn't have the kit for for vestibule doors so those are low level only in Montréal. So when train gets to large station, dwell time can be reduced due to faster movement of people in/out of car. These cares are "FRA heavy steel" because designed post FRA rules and accelerate more slowly than the bi-levels which are aluminium. On an express service, it makes less of a difference, but for our services in Montréal with relatively short distance between stations, the trip feels very sluggish on diesels. NJ Transit has electrics (and some bi-modes) which have greater acceleration to cope with the heavier cars.

You guys visit the Northeast Corridor. The reason why it's electric is because most of the line has poor ventilation. Mostly by NJT and Amtrak. Some still use diesel power despite the fact the NEC is electric. One of them is MBTA. MBTA relies on diesel power which pollutes the stations. Penn station is cool. Completely electric line in the U.S.

The distribution of bathrooms in any given NJT consist that isn't made of Arrow III's is pretty random, but at the very least all cab cars in loco-hauled trains always have a bathroom. I have been on off-peak trains where some cars are not open, and sometimes this has resulted in there not being a bathroom you can actually access, which is not great. As far as the multilevels, the cab cars (70xx) plus any 72xx series non-cab cars have bathrooms (that's specifically why they are numbered in a different series). As for the Arrows, the odd numbered cars (with pantographs) in the married pairs have bathrooms, (although the single cars do not), so they are nicely distributed through the train, just one more reason those old warhorses are still my favorite. About the fares: NJT saw massive fare increases during the Chris Christie era... I would be hard pressed to think of a single person who has ever done more harm to public transport in our state. His refusal to fund NJT properly resulted in deferred maintenance to trains, buses, and infrastructure, along with drastic staffing shortages (which we are only now overcoming) and the aforementioned fare increases. That's to say nothing of his canceling the ARC tunnel project and trying to use its federal funding on road repairs instead. Fares have been more or less level for the 5+ years since he left office, so the rest of the world is gradually catching up to them.
