The duel's the swordfights are quite brutal in that movie from what i can remember i remember when Harvey keitel (Gabriel Feraud) and Keith Carradine (Armand d'Hubert) are dueling in what looks like some country warehouse and keitel's sword literally takes a massive chunk of Keith Carradine's skin off and another bit his skin is just peeled off and i remember thinking yikes lol

Saw it last night! It was okay. I thought Vanessa Kirby out acted Joaquin Phoenix. She looked and acted more European precisely because she is. Phoenix is an American! Rufus Sewell would've been a better choice. I've read some about Napoleon, and he was nothing like what this movie portrays. Napoleon syndrome is a real thing for a reason! Napoleon was charismatic! He was controlling! He was domineering! He was also a charmer because he didn't have the looks to rely on! He was also brilliant and calculating! Lastly, he was very proud...not insecure! At least not in public. His public personna was kingly and mesmerizing. Phoenix's portrayal was sleepy! Uncharismatic! Tired! Easy to manipulate! He's also not much of a leader in this movie! He let's Josephine string him along like a love-sick puppy! He's manipulated by Alexander...a boy who had no military knowledge or experience! Lastly, Napoleon was not afraid of anything. Phoenix's portrayal shows Napoleon being insecure, and a somewhat of a coward which he was not. If Napoleon was outmatched, he didn't tuck tail and run. He strategically retreated with a plan to regroup. The only time in the movie I think they got his character right, was I how he bullied Josephine but kept coming back for more because that's what bullies do. His anger and temperament was accurate in this movie! But that's pretty much it.

Funny: "A picture is worth a thousand words": The quote is sometimes attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte, who said "A good sketch is better than a long speech" (French: Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu'un long discours). This is sometimes translated today as "A picture is worth a thousand words." (Wikipedia)

Best part of any of it, could be, having had the chance to experience/explore more of RS’s dry wit/sense of humor. Clear his combined talents and personality have won him fans through his career in motion picture/films. Cheers and applause 👏 to that and of course the good of any of it.

Dry/wit sense of humour is probably why I laughed on like, half of the film, because I understood (or at least if I didn't understand, my mind definitely interpeted them in that way) A LOT of things that might not even have been intended to be humorous, which I absolutely loved because to be honest, half of the movie was a big meme with the quotes and the script etc 😂😊

What a pleasant and informative videocast. At 16:55, I thought that it was so grand of Vanessa to not give her answer and let the interviewer say why Napoleon was obsessed with Josephine. Of course, she is right. When a man loves a woman more than she loves him; he cannot bear to be discarded; he must win her heart and when he fails to do so, his whole life becomes an obsession to find the way to impress her. In Napoleon's tormented career, something like 3 million soldiers went to their early graves and I am sure many were lost because of his desire to show Josephine he was king of the world and he would sacrifice anything and anyone for her love. In vain. Vanessa Kirby is an outstanding performer because she is an artist first and foremost who makes us see what an actor is all about: finding the way to express what someone else must have been going through and doing it with style. What an achievement for Ridly Scott and Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby and the many, many other actors and performers and film crew members who made it possible to film such an epic.

That's nonsense. Read a history book and stop thinking Hollyweird actually cares about depicting it properly. Napoleon was obsessed with her at first, but finally got fed up with her. He banished her to the other end of the house and paraded concubines in and out before they finally divorced, and the quote in this film of his last words being of her is a lie from a family member of hers. Not one person at his deathbed said he ever spoke her name even once.

I waited for this movie so much. I could not be more happy when finally I was able to buy tickets and go to see it. I watched it and is sheat. Massive, huge fricken disappointment. The real title should be Josephine, and subtitle - Napoleon on drugs. Sorry, but either Phoenix was badly instructed what to do or he just deos not have the charisma to play characters like Bonaparte. Nearly 3 hours long movie about one of the greatest commanders and leaders in history, reduced to alcove’s ventures. Historically its just marvell level, it's beyond bad. I wonder what the purpose of this pic was? It has very little to do with Napoleon, even less with history. Btw, you will learn from this movie it was the russians that defeated Napoleon. Seriously. The movie is a conglomerate of completely random events without any significance and meaning. You can walk out, go to loo, get the food, come back and you will miss nothing. Waste of money and time. The ony good things are the battles,. All two of them. The rest is just incoherent gibberish. And the music, or sound rather is awful, some islamic (?) howling interlaced with orthodox one. Horrible.

Thought Napoleon was terrific! I can see why some might have not enjoyed it, considering it's a compressed version of his life for the cinema screen, but for what it was, I loved most of it and found it to be Ridley's strongest film in nearly twenty years. Felt like a return to the old style of Ridley from the 80's and 90's at times, and reminded me a bit of 1492 Conquest Of Paradise, which is a very underrated film. Brilliantly staged battle sequences, stunning locations, set design, cinematography and attention to great detail as well. Now bring on the 4 hour cut.

this film is unworthy of Ridley Scott! he should have taken inspiration from his film “The Duelists” which is an excellent film.

You know, folk who claim to know about the history of NB have thrown rottern tomartos at it. I said to my misses, watch it with a clean mind and we enjoyed it. I visited the Duke of Wellington's house today and spent some time looking at paintings of Empress Josephine. I think Vanessa Kirby good acting job for sure and i get the connection

Those who dislike it I have to say to them this is an entertaining movie, not a documentary! It was a complex historical period, they could not cover everything in 2.5 hours. They did not cover any of Napoleon's institutional reforms such as the civil code, because it would be awkward and boring as a movie.

It's not entertaining, though. That's a big part of the problem with it.

Vanessa's no idea abt what she's talking about...I mean her impressions of a castle, where Josephine died. That was Malmaison, but in the movie we don't see Malmaison, that's totally another castle! I've been to Malmaison twice in 2019 and 2022!

What a haughty aristocratic accent Vanesa has, home bred for a thousand years from the mountains and forests of Skane. The icy fjord gaze rolling in the Albion green hills buries a longship in its silt.

Very disappointing with this WOKE Napoleon movie. Had a huge hope before watching, was expecting something like Gladiator and it was joke of a movie.

To save your time and money, DO NOT watch "Napoleon". You will thank me for this advice. The weak movie has nothing to do with history besides the name.

Awful film. Comes across as a hatchet job on Napoleon, cut to pieces to fit into 2.5 hours. Doesn't know what it wants to be. No character development so they needed to put on screen titles to label who some people were. No accents so at one point, the messenger tells a king that Bonaparte landed. Turns out it was Louis XVIII with a Basingstoke accent. Not fussed about accuracy, but there's no cohesion in the jumps from one time to another. I love Phoenix, but he plays a jaded miserable mumbling napoleon from the beginning to end. At 23 he was dynamic, charismatic and ambitious. Not world weary and quiet as played. The grading was appalling. The whole thing looked like a Nuclear winter had fallen on Europe. Pointless scenes here and there - what that Mummy scene all about? Finally, Phoenix's Napoleon looked the same at 23 as at 46 at Waterloo. Avoid.

As far as I know, Napoleon didn't have a "harelip"! The choice of the main character was completely wrong! I can't see him as Napoleon with his face, nor age. In the case of a biographical film, I think the similarity between the real person to be portrayed and the actor portraying it is important for authenticity. (See Oppenheimer and upcoming Bernstein movies.) No matter how fantastic the actor is chosen, but I can not believe that he is Napoleon. Now we can see Commodus as a Warlord instead of Napoleon! Super!!! If the director wanted Joaquin Phoenix in his film at all costs, he could have given him the role of General Von Blücher. He had a mustache. Sorry!

A work of art it may be, I know nothing about that. But how can something be a portrait if it does not take any account of the portrayed person's life, behaviour or overall character?
