Hi John. Thank you so much for all the info. I've been shooting skeet and rifle for over 40 years. I'm retiring soon and want to get into competition rifle shooting. I really appreciate the info that you are sharing.. Hopefully there are some youngsters that will take up the sport. They are dwindling. Thanks again.

John, The Shadetree Rest is a top that you add to a traditional front rest. You will note that he offers several different post diameters to fit the different rests.

Thank you for pointing that out and yes, I totally brainfarted when I did that one for some reason. In an effort to not cause any confusion I've cut that out and will look to cover it in another video. I've already had some people ask about some other front rests that are sub $1000 and that top would be a good addition to that video.

For a budget friendly level front rest you need to look at one made by shade tree engineering and accuracy, you only get a top but you order to fit different bottoms, they seem well built. Did enjoy your video and information about front rest

John, can you do or do you have a video on rear rests? SEB has some great rear rests. I’m curious your thoughts on the different spacing sizes he sells…which work better or is it just dependent on the width of the rear stock?

The hard part with these rests is that they are fundamentally not available. IT is one of the biggest drags of Bench rest or F class, The gear is not readily available and is more of a " put your name on a list and wait a year,, if you are lucky...... Meanwhile, tough.

Need to buy used, these things are out there, people upgrade and, trade,and quit everyday. Ther are apps you can get on your phone that will alert you when a certain item comes up available for sale, weather it's powder, primer, in this case ,rests. Search those apps, I just was able to buy brass from a person who sent me a notification from one of those apps. Point is,it works for sights too I hear Like accurate shooter

I spent a year and a half searching for a RPR in 6.5 Creed. I year waiting on a custom build in same caliber. I know it's frustrating. I ve looked for front rests and can only advise to order one you want then use whatever you have or can get untill your choice comes in. My biggest roadblock is finding a place with distance ( a thousand yards with no close homes would be great) to practice. 300 is what I have. 500 is max I've shot and that was temp. 😢

Of interest the Caldwell firecontrol units can be smoothed up pretty well. But, you need to pull them apart and lap the friction plates, play around with different greases and pay attention the the friction pressure screws/buttons after reassembly. When that has been done, they are quite passable for a budget F Class rig.

Hey John, do you have a website that shows this stuff? I’m a buy once cry once person and I’m not f class yet but I want to in the future. I’m not looking to buy junk and I’d like to see all your recommendations in one location. I already went with your trimmer recommendation and I’m looking for other essential gear like rests. By the way it’s sad you only have 17.7k subs. Your channel is gold.

First off, thank you for the kind words. As for your question, sadly no, there isn't one place to see them all. Most of the F Class world (along with other disciplines) are what we'd consider to be 'boutique' items and often one person's desire for a bette product that is in turn somehow turned into a sellable item often without the creator having any business, marketing or sales experience. What the evolves into is a series of rabbit holes and small poorly designed websites that are often hard to navigate and sometimes even harder to actually buy from. I'm working to create a solution to this but it'll take some time. Wish I had a better answer but there isn't one yet. Sorry.

On the Caldwell fire control how do you lap the friction plates
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. I didn't lap them. But you can open it up and clean it up which can smooth it up. But even at that it will never be on par with the most expensive ones. Good but never great.

You have to email ernieemily@yahoo.com to get a price list and get on the waiting list for any of the rests (in the US). He's the US distributor. If you're outside the US let me know and I'll find you the proper contact.

As a 1000yd benchrest shooter who can tell you that small groups depend on a good tracking set up so you can get your 10 round record string down 1000yd to your target quickly. If your front rest has windage adjustment, then you will be adjusting for windage a few times between shots. If your rest does not have windage adjustment , then you will not have to worry about it moving left or right. Though if you shoot F-Class which is slow fire to where we get 10 down before F-class gets their 2nd shot down due to the target going down and getting a orange circle put up then it does not really matter if there is windage adjustment, also for the fact the F-class prone position shooting halts some recoil which can lead to torque, its better probably for the front rest to have windage adjustment for the nature of that style of competition shooting. Where as in 1000yd BR we are letting the rifle totaly do what its going to do without any type of stopage or manipulation other than pushing the rifle back up into battery with our shoulder to where it touches the front stop
