As a new Garand owner with a period sling these videos are actually extremely helpful

Is that an original "gas trap" Garand in this film? The one that got upgraded to the modern version?

The web sling is much less complicated and works just as well. Take it from a guy who took second place in the Ninth Naval District rifle match with an off the rack M1, Lake City ball ammo and a well worn web sling.

Incredibly helpful video with a nostalgic flair to it. I just replaced the original rotted sling on my ‘66 Remington 700 and was never taught how to use it. This video solved that

This is how you turn an unstable, poorly balanced, human and a rifle, into a turreted artillery piece.

An oldie but a goodie! I can't recall the narrator's name but he did a ton of narration in the 40's. I don't think it was only military in nature. No point here, just an interesting observation.

I think that bit at the very end sums up everything I heard about the sling in actual combat conditions (OK, Ian McCollum. But him and this video are the only two I've found specifically about use in combat). Good video.

These videos must have been pretty painful to watch back in ww2. They would have shown it using the old projector and you'd all be cramped in a tiny room having to watch this to completion and then afterwards having to do all this again.

1. Cost. We were in the great depression 2. Material shortages. 3. Lots of left over slings from 1903 Rifles, that instructors already knew how to use. There was a cloth version (the M1 sling) that was fielded later, that does have some advantages.

3:55 the instructor calls the grip a "pistol grip".
@AngeredKabar
@AngeredKabar 6 жыл бұрын
Captain For a time a grip on a rifle stock that was more contoured and was designed for your thumb to easily wrap around the top was considered a pistol grip. Terminology has changed since then to include a vertical grip more or less separate from the stock and that is a lot more common in usage now.
@danphariss133
@danphariss133 6 жыл бұрын
Which is correct. As apposed to the straight grip stock. The term FAR predates rifles like the StG44, the Ak etc.

Not in California, its a featureless stock, kind of like screwing a barrel and receiver to a two by six and painting its pink. that is if its not on a ban list or something. soon that commie state will ban nurf guns and water pistols because nurf darts could be put in a freezer and get hard and put a mark on someone's ass and water pistols because you could put soap in the water and make the bad guys eyes sting ( unless you use Mr Bubbles, that doesn't sting) but it does make bath time fun.

So is there a separate "ar15 gi cotton web sling" and another style "m1 garand gi cotton web sling" or are they the same thing?
@nglitz
@nglitz 7 жыл бұрын
Same thing. The green cotton sling is about as generic as a military sling can get. It fits everything.
@AngeredKabar
@AngeredKabar 6 жыл бұрын
Shown here is a 1907 sling. Its leather and I want to say Korea was the last time it saw use. Probably wasn't even used much in WWII. You can do much the same with a GI web sling (the green cotton one) but it's a bit different in construction and use.
@SouthernGround
@SouthernGround 6 жыл бұрын
different, the leather one is old school, but still allowed in high powered rifle, most run the synthetic version, me i prefer the go old web small arms sling. its a personal choice really.

@Kuuryo So What? If this was properly planned they would not have the demonstrators pointing their weapon at a fellow soldier. Just show you then as now, the brass does not hold their lives as valuable. If you were to do this at most ranges you would, and should, be asked to leave....
