Fraccaroli refuge from Vajo dei Cavai | Monte Carega - Small Dolomites:
The Vallon dei Cavai (or Vajo dei Cavai) is one of the numerous valleys that go up the northern side of the Carega massif. It is one of the most scenic and evocative of the various vajis in the area.
It starts from the hamlet of Ometto, in the municipality of Vallarsa, just before a tunnel closed to traffic. You can easily park along the street. You then cross the tunnel and continue along the dirt road following the CAI 160 path. After about ten minutes of relaxing walking in a wooded environment you reach the entrance to a gravel valley where there is a sign indicating the Vallon dei Cavai .
From here, along a not very visible path, you go up a large part of this valley until there is a 90° deviation on the left, which is not very well marked. We will then go up this side valley which immediately begins with an excellent slope, immediately pay attention to falling rocks especially as the valley narrows. Going up you pass two very scenic rocky horns on the left, which can initially be seen from below and will eventually be seen from above.
At the end of trail 160 and you arrive on a much busier trail. Now in a good half hour you can reach the Fraccaroli refuge.
We then descend from the Fraccaroli refuge, descending from Val Grande. Here we find ourselves in a very risky valley, a path that is poorly marked and not clean, full of stones and landslides as well as very steep. The descent to Val Grande alone takes a couple of hours where you must pay close attention. You first pass through a long stretch between rocks and pines and finally into a wooded area.
