After spending a night in Rifugio Scoiattoli, we were headed to Rifugio Locatelli, located in the Tre Cime di Lavaredo National Park.
[In case you want to know more about our experience our stay at Rifugio Scoiatolli, check out the link : • RIFUGIO SCOIATTOLI - C... ]
The mighty Tre Cime di Lavaredo are one of the most majestic and commonly photographed mountain peaks in the world.
We drove from Passo Giau to the car park at Rifugio Auronzo. There are large car parking areas here but they do fill up quite rapidly during the summer months, so do try to get here early in the day. There is a €30 entrance fee for a single entry/exit to the car parking area to keep in mind.
A wide and flat trail connects Rifugio Auronzo to Rifugio Lavaredo, which is halfway between Locatelli and Auronzo.
The Rifugio Lavaredo sits right in the shadow of Tre Cime peaks. Great views from right outside the Rifugio, so we took a small break at Lavaredo for a quick bite, before heading onward to Rifugio Locatelli.
From Rifugio Lavaredo, a short hike takes you up and over Forcella Lavaredo. Once at top of the Forcella , the views change dramatically, opening up to a spectacular view of Tre Cime Park and the valley below.
And from here, like a dot, we can see our destination for the night, Rifugio Locatelli. The sign here indicates a 30 min hike, but it almost takes 45 min - 1 hour to reach Locatelli.
Rifugio Locatelli (m.2405) stands in a panaromic position on the Forcella di Toblin. From here you will have the best view of the Tre Cime peaks. We were able to admire the Tre Cime in their breathtakingly profile, along with the magnificent lakes of Piani.
As for the Rifugio itself, unlike Scoiattoli, the facilities were basic and functional. As it's a very popular place, book well ahead (via email) for private rooms. We were late in booking, but managed to get two beds in dormitories.
Also make sure to reach there before 6pm, as they might give your room or beds away after that, if you don't show up. Bathrooms are shared and you have to pay for the shower.
Blankets are provided with the bunks, so we only carried the sleeping sheets with us.
We opted for the half board option, which includes Dinner and Breakfast. Dinner started at 7pm. Three courses, with some really tasty options for all food tastes!!
We were fortunate to witness an amazing sunset. The three giant rocks along with valley looked fascinating in the evening light, before the clouds started rolling in later in the evening.
We got up again at 4AM the next morning, to watch the sunrise above two lakes just behind the Rifugio, and everything looked magical when the Sun casts the first orange glow on to the magnificent Tre Cime peaks.
After a simple, but filling, Breakfast, we made our way back down to the Rifugio Auronzo car park.
It is definitely one of the most beautiful hikes in the Dolomites. And it's fairly easy with no steep climbs, so almost anyone can visit the three majestic peaks.
We were then headed to our next hike of the day to Lake Sorapiss.
