Sasso Nero Refuge Val Aurina.
The excursion to the Sasso Nero refuge is one of the most spectacular and longest in the Ahrntal valley.
The construction of the refuge began in 2016, to replace the old Vittorio Veneto refuge, located a few hundred
meters lower than the new structure.
For this ascent you need a good workout and good legs (1600 m of altitude difference are not trivial) as well as a
good acclimatization.
The starting point is the hamlet of San Giovanni in Valle Aurina (north of Campo Tures) where by car you turn right in the direction of Malga Stallila at 1472 m. excellent refuge and refreshment point.
The path begins slightly uphill and here is the first revelation: almost everyone stops right at Malga Stalliler (which is beautiful and already sunny in the early morning) or embarks on the Sentiero del Sole which cuts through the valley, remaining almost always at high altitude.
We continue along path 23A which winds along a forest with a rather regular pace up to Daimer Hutte (1872 masl). We leave the last people with their steaming dishes and cold beers on the tables outside the refuge. From here on, in fact, we will not meet almost anyone.
The climb begins immediately behind the Malga Daimer Hutte: the actual path begins and the 23A turns into path 23.
In steep switchbacks we climb along the east side of the valley until we reach a showy glacial moraine beyond which the crevasses of the Vedretta di Rio Rosso (Rotbachkees) stand out.
In about 5 hours we arrive at Rifugio Sasso Nero crossing snowfields and a short equipped path.
