Hi Matt, I know this is one of your older videos, but that extremely well made "Line Spool Holding Device" in the video (3:10 min) was it custom made or is there a company that manufactures them? You get some great unique gear over there, sometimes us in the States have to import the good stuff (Like for Overlanding Gear for the LandCruiser) Ask me how I know that...HAHA

Good day Matt... On a 50lb setup, targeting tuna and billfish, would you go from the mono to a double line (aussie plait) and then swivel, and be done with it? Or will you go from the mono to a leader using the hollow braid splice, and then crimp swivel on leader? I'm having mixed feelings.... Thanks

Hi Matt, whats the next step after splicing in the topshot? How do you connect the leader? Or do you directly fish a lure on the very end of the topshot? Thanks for the answer!

This is for game fishing, Marlin mostly, so he then ties a double, adds a snap swivel and form their you clip your rigs on. Lures etc that have their own leaders.

I have a Penn squal 30 with 32b drag can I put 120lb 8X braid with a 130lb mono for tuna fishing or should I go heavier. tuna range 55kg to max 200kg advice pls

I wouldn't go any heavier and really don't think you need anywhere near 32lbs of drag. I fish 80lb Toro Tamer hollow core (which I really like) to a 150 foot topshot of 100lb mono on a Makaira 30 for tuna up to 200lbs and never need more than 18-20lbs of drag. The graphite body won't be a problem unless you over gun the drag with too heavy of line. I'd preset the drag to 18lbs at strike and you'll be amazed how much it is. This way even if you have a big tuna up and down you can button down to turn the fishes head but you're not gonna have frame issues. Graphite reels have caught a ton of huge fish and won't be a problem as long as you stay within reason.

So I’m using 80lb hollow, should I use 80 or 100 mono? Will one slip more than the other?

why do u need a holow braid??? sorry for dumb question...I see a lot of video hot splice a holow braid, but can't find videos for holow braid purposes.. :)

You can connect hollow core to monofilament or fluorocarbon without using a knot. The way hollow core is designed, it acts like a chinese finger trap. The harder you pull on it, the more it will squeeze down and cinch onto your other line. That's my understanding.

Hollow core has a few great advantages in big game fishing. You can make wind on leaders and go loop to loop connections. You can splice in topshots without a swivel or bulky knot. You can also splice in new hollow core with 100% strength if you've lost line. I love it because for tuna fishing I can have 80lb hollow mainline but splice in 150 feet of 130lb hollow followed by 50-75 feet of 200lb hollow. This lets me have the line capacity of 80lb, fight the fish on 130lb and end the battle with 200lb. Tuna like to make big circles straight up and down so with the 200lb I can button down the drag and turn the fishes head. Lots of advantages of hollow core but the biggest is simply the options it gives you.
