Right Start Math Manipulatives are the best collection I have found. Math manipulatives should be engaging, encourage exploration, and teach you something! RightStart Math has reached that goal with flying colors. In this video we break down each manipulative, how it's used in each level, and how it serves your child.

Hey guys! I'm Summer Meyers, homeschool mom to five kiddos, and we talk all things homeschool on this channel. Homeschool community is important to me--talking about homeschool and encouragement to be our best selves for our children is powerful. I love talking home education and really diving into what makes homeschool work. We are an ecletic homeschool, mixing Charlotte Mason, Wildschooling/adventure schooling, and Unit studies. I have kinesthetic learners as well as visual learners who thrive on being outdoors and soaking up God's green earth. I love hearing from other families who are choosing to school at home, so please introduce yourself in the comments! Being at home is hard, and taking on the education of our kids is even harder. Know that you are not alone in this journey and that you can do it!

I just wanted to say we love RightStart. The lessons are long but how they teach it is amazing! I wish I was taught math this way. Maybe I wouldn’t have felt completely confused by it. I see a lot of homeschooling Moms who consider it too much for them as parents but it is sooo worth it! If you have a kid who shuts down with flash cards and endless worksheets, this is the math program for you!

I wish I was taught math this way too! It would have saved me so much grief. I got to say, our first year lessons took FOREVER, but it does get faster doing level B 3rd time around with the 4 the kid. 😆😆❤️❤️

One other hack for kids with hyperhidrosis is the battery powered scratch pads! ESPECIALLY for left handed kiddos. (Those of us that are left handed get very frustrated and struggle with white boards and chalk boards, because our hand rubs over what we just wrote).

A scratch pad!! What a great idea! We already have a few of those, but I never thought to use one for school. 🤦‍♀️ Haha! I'll have to bring those into our school room. Thanks for the tip! ❤️

I love your videos 😄 You come across as very authentic, and I love your sense of humor. I selected Right Start Math for my daughter, who will be starting TK this fall. Super excited to see everything that’s included 😮😍 I couldn’t be more excited to find a CURRICULUM that teaches math through games. I’m planning on using Logic of English for the same reason-lots of songs and games; and it incorporates physical activities into the lessons 🙌🏼 (Plus the nerd in me is so excited to learn the rules of English haha). Thanks so much for this video!

Thank you for sharing!! I have an upcoming fourth grader and second grader. I wonder if I should start a level before so we can get the hang of it since we aren't starting from the beginning. Do you have any thoughts about just jumping right in?
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! There is a placement test, and then a few days of review lessons at the beginning of each level. So if your kids don't have any experience with an abacus, or have had a long summer break, that should get them moving in the right direction. I would go ahead and jump right in to the level they place at. 💕💕

Yes! The manipulative set is for all the levels, although I will say that there are a few manipulatives that are just for level A and maybe B like the tally mark cards or hand cards. The majority of the set you will use. Check on eBay or Facebook curriculum groups for used sets--I snagged our set for a little over $100 when we first started. Glad it was helpful! 🤗💕 I have a Level A-D video that goes through what's in it.

I'm considering a switch from MWC 1st to probably RightStart B. I have a slew of manipulatives from various other math curriculum. Is there a list of the manipulatives that are specifically used in each level (I haven't been able to find one....I'm hoping it's in the teacher's guide)? It would make the switch easier if I could just get the bits I needed.
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers 9 ай бұрын
So there isn't a list specific to B. All the materials are used except for the drawing tools and goniometer so I wouldn't bother buying those. I have bought the foldable math stick 3 times now and my kids keep messing with it and breaking it. 🤦‍♀️ We've resorted with retractable measuring tape instead. I've priced it out, and buying individually I'm not sure would save you a ton unless you already have the majority of the items already. Here is my affiliate link directly to the manipulatives. That lists everything out. Hope it helps! ❤️ rightstartmath.idevaffiliate.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=225&url=566

Summer thank you for this in depth review! I'm on the fence between Right Start and Math With Confidence. I have an 8 year old who hasn't had any formal teaching up to this point. He is resistant to being taught and an Unschooler at heart. I'm not super confident teaching Math and giving him a "why" behind lessons. Worksheets are a no go in our house. I'd love to know your thoughts on all those hang ups I have. How easy is it to teach Right Start? Should we jump in to Level B?
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers Жыл бұрын
Level B is not heavy in worksheets and they are very basic-- couple of problems and then you move on with your day. I like the setup because it encourages independence-- we go through a lesson and then you finish the lesson off by yourself. That's a skill that doesn't happen over night, so I try to be patient when we are working at that. Is he competitive at all? I would invest in a few "normal" games that he can practice math facts with so he can make the connection of "why we do math". Sleeping Queens, Candy thief, Zeus's on the loose are great for that age. Is there a reason you are deciding to take a different approach for math since you started unschooling? No judgement, just curious. ❤️

@@SummerMeyers My son is a wiz at the Monopoly card game. He can count money coins well and do some mental Math. I have a 5 year old and 2 year old as well so I'm going to grab both Level A and Level B. Yeah so as far as Unschooling, it really clicked for my son between the ages of 4 and 7. I let him take the lead in what he wanted to learn and he was so eager. I almost couldn't keep up. Lol. A shift happened when he turned 8 years old. He was chronically bored for months. It seems like he needs a little more direction. He loves games and so I thought Right Start might be a way to connect through play and learn a little Math along the way. My 5 year old loves games even more so I'm hoping I can do joint lessons with both boys and just let my 5 year old glean what he wants. I'm still passionate about Unschooling. We spend a lot of time outside, on KZfaq and playing Minecraft.

Great idea and a great approach! I love siblings doing side by side learning. I think RightStart could be a good fit to jog his curiosity. I think the Levels and the Yellow Math Game book would be a great way to explore math if you want to be more loose with your approach. Best of luck!! ❤️❤️

How do you use rightstart with 5 kids? I also have 5. I have used RightStart for a while too. I will have one finishing F and doing G, one in E and one in B, a 3yr old and a 1yr old this fall. I really like rightstart...it just takes a while to teach....but so does everything. Also oldest can make it take +1hour to do a lesson. Any mom to mom tips?;)
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers 2 жыл бұрын
I'm currently teaching 4 of my kids with RightStart and some days it's a battle and some days it's a cruise. 😆😎 I usually get one started, then move to the next one and bounce between the two. Sometimes if they both just have worksheets, I can add a third into the mix. I also do not go longer than 30 minutes for their lessons. If it's taking longer because of a warm up, or a game, I'll split the lesson into 2 days. It's been my experience that if I do longer than that, their brains turn off and it takes twice as long as it should. If we speed through a lesson in 10 minutes, I'll do the next one or I'll pull out a game. Games make lessons go that much faster because they get a chance to practice their math facts. But you're also juggling a toddler and a baby! 👏👏🙌 That's a ball game in itself! Hang tight and don't make things too hard for yourself! 🤗❤️

It depends on the level. If there isn't a game involved, I can usually do a lesson between 15 to 20 minutes. A game will add time, but it's part of the fun and learning process. What levels are you looking at? ❤️

My daughter is finishing up Math with Confidence 1st grade. I’m torn between Right Start B or C. Does C review addition in the beginning? She hasn’t done multiple addition.
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers Жыл бұрын
Level C goes over quite a bit of single digit/double digit in the beginning and then does a section on subtraction (which isn't really covered in level B). It works on multiple digit addition and subtraction by the end of the level as well as introducing multiplication. I would take the placement test just to be sure where she falls. RightStart definitely takes a unique approach to what they introduce in each level. Kate Snow's books are solid and the transition between the two, I have heard, are pretty easy. ❤️❤️ Best of luck!

What are your thoughts on Saxon Math? Have you ever tried it?
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers 2 жыл бұрын
I have not used it, for a few reasons. I'm personally not a fan of flash cards or drill worksheets, which Saxon relies on. However, I know several families who have used it, and really love it. Also, it's a great program if you plan to transition back into American public school, since it does follow pretty closely to their grade level standards, meaning it doesn't jump around like RightStart. One more thought to consider is that it's spiral based. Definitely not a bad thing, but it's something to consider if you prefer mastery instead. Some children thrive on spiral and some (like my middle!) are like goldfish and need mastery based. 😜 Hope that helps! 💕💕

@@SummerMeyers Up to which grade can Right stat be used? Does it go up to High School? If not which curriculum will you use at a more structured level, like middle school or high school?
@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers 2 жыл бұрын
I think typically kids finish around 7th to 8th grade, depending on how quickly they work through the levels which go up to H. Some parents stop at F and start a new program for Pre-Algebra/Algebra. G and H (I have not gone this far yet) are heavy with geometry and algebra, although I think you would want to go into traditional Algebra after completing all the levels. I've recently heard a lot of parents moving on to something called Mr. D math which sounds phenomenal. Righstart has a page of recommendations on what to transition into high school: store.rightstartmath.com/home-school/high-school/

Did you buy the manipulative kit from Right start? Or did you buy them from other places
@SummerMeyers

My first year I bought everything used because I was not sure if we would love it and I didn't care for the price tag. There was a big set on e-bay and I snagged it. I've also seen them used at homeschool consignment stores and facebook groups. If you can't find a used set, I would say its absolutely worth it to get directly from RightStart. They are phenomenal company and have great customer service. I would not try to make up my own kit with amazon or somewhere else--it just would not be worth it. ❤

Thank you so much, I didn't find much of anything on eBay, and am not very familiar with any homeschool buyers club. Depends on the level-- Level A is shortest. We spend about 15-20 minutes most days. The levels get incrementally longer as you go up. You can decrease the amount of time spent by looking over the lesson before hand and learning the games. What levels are you looking at?

@SummerMeyers
@SummerMeyers Жыл бұрын
I've heard good things about MC! Switching between math programs in general is notoriously hard, but RS does make a lot of effort to ease in new families. There are review lessons at the beginning of each level that do a rough overview of the Right Start way of viewing math and working with the abacus. Make sure to do the placement test. RightStart is considered a spiral mastery, so it builds on skills introduced in earlier levels. This should help with any gaps with switching from a different curriculum. You'll be able to gain mastery with the math games book. If you think it's a good fit, I would go for it! It's a solid program. ❤️
