GRUFF is a handmade, paper short film I've been designing, building, puppeteering, and editing across almost three years. It's a story about the people you know love you, but aren’t exactly verbal about it. It’s how I've processed my dad’s passing, and learned how to love people who don't love exactly like me.
I believe we all have individuals in our lives, related or not, that pride themselves as the "strong silent types". Through this short film, I hope all of us can learn to empathize, connect, and more deeply love the those who have so much more to say than we think, and just need us to listen.
I hope you enjoy "GRUFF".

I really liked gruff although I don’t know why it’s called gruff if anyone see’s this please tell me why if you know but my opinion on the movie is that it was great the only thing I didn’t like is that it was a bit woke I honestly thought it was gonna be an hour long but 10 minutes is still pretty good I mean I know the trials and errors of making an animation so I can blame him but overall my rating is 8.5/10

I really love how in the reveal of the true perspective of that chair. its not facing the tv. its facing the wall of all her accomplishments. but the thing i REALLY love is that the things front and center have nothing to do with her career as a spy but instead focus on her accomplishments growing up. the ones he got to share with her personally. the marshal art competitions her at dance practice. her graduation pictures of her in his lap. those are dead center on the wall.

A tiny detail that meant the world to me. A close family member with cancer drew a tree in our kitchen wall with a beautiful shade of blue behind it. I grew up admiring it. They soon passed on, and that was decades ago. It looks just like the trees behind the father during the hospital scene. That's what tipped the scales for me. The tree was painted over when we lost the house. It was nice to see something so similar again. Beautiful story.

My grandfather was born in the 50s and 60s around the time where children were supposed to be seen and not heard he came from a very abusive household he's always kept to himself and has always been quiet.. even at my graduation he didn't come up and tell me congratulations so I took it personally... And just like the old man he always sit in his chair and watch TV he never really talked to anyone... In a way this brought me so much comfort and for that I thank you.....❤

i find this film to be even more impressive and shocking knowing that not all of the “paper” used was real paper, according to righteous robot, some set pieces were made out of clay, recycled cardboard , aluminum foil, toothpicks, and even marshmallow pieces. This just goes to show how truly dedicated this guy was to making this short film a certified creative masterpiece.

This film almost made me cry, which i never do, because it reminded me so much of my uncle in the last few years of his life. He was my father figure since i got unlucky and had a dad i wish left. He had glyoblastoma, a rare incureable brain tumor, so it made it hard to talk or really do much, but we all still knew he loved us. My mom was in the room when he died, and held his hand in his final moments. She was the only other person in the room.

yeah this one hit in the feels my mother just passed away June 3, 2024 from brain cancer, metastasis from melanoma the last two months of her life, it was hard for her to speak at first she just had slurred speech, but could barely say a couple words close to the end brain tumors are a hard, frustrating way to go I'm glad your mom was with him, my sister & I were with my mom when she took her last breath & it gave us peace may we all have peace & remember to cherish your loved ones

3 years of painstaking work... gone where? This has to be the most ''mid'' lukewarm shtick ever put on the site. What even was the message? Pop Pop should have paid more attention to his kids? The old bastard was a prick to his daughter and it's somehow remedied by him getting cancer. Wow! What surface level garbage did I waste 9 minutes watching. When the fictional show within your short film seems more interesting than the show itself, that's bad... Sorry, but if you cried to this, toughen up.

The only time I ever saw the pain in my grandfather's eyes was when he came to terms that his cancer would win. Men who take it upon themselves to be the rock that holds a household do not have the liberty to wear their hearts for the world to see. When you hold the world on your shoulders the smallest crack will bring you toppling down. Society should appreciate these men more. Grandpa, thank you.

Dang this actually made me cry, haven't done that in a while! But seriously this is a masterpiece! It kind of reminded me of my dad, he wasn't quiet in the same way the dad in the film was, but he had to have a surgery that resulted in one of his vocal cords getting messed up, so he couldn't talk as loud or as much as he used to. I was too young when he had the surgery to remember what his voice sounded like before, so I only knew what it sounded like at a whisper. We have recordings of his voice before the surgery, but they're all old, so I know they don't sound like he did in person. It's sometimes weird to think about how I don't really know what my dad's real voice sounded like and that I never will. But anyway, this is amazing, and you seriously deserve some kind of reward for it!

Reminds me of my grandad. He was also a man of few words. One of my dearest memories of him is when I was sick while we visited them I laid on the coach and eatch tv. My grandad would come in after working on the lands and watch tv for a bit. We were just quiet but his presence while we watched tv together was so comforting. I mis him a lot and wished I had more time with him❤

I love how the super-spy's action and praise is described as "living LOUDER", how she craved and chased the SOUND of applause, but found the deepest love in *silence.* The narration unifies the theme with its own language. And an even deeper irony is that this film's most demonstrative moments aren't characters exchanging witty dialogue, but them quietly touching hands and being close. The narration describes the characters' mindsets, and then the visuals deliver the gut punching catharsis.

I came for the art, stayed for the story. I lost my grandpa last december. And he didn't talk much. He loved it when i called, but he was always the one to say: okay, that's it for now. I lost my parents when i was young and my grandpa was the only one that made me feel like there was someone out there to genuinely happy for me. That my happiness directly impacted his. His house was a little museum of pictures and achievements. As a small kid his old age and limited babbling bored me. But i am so thankful that i grew to appreciate him for what a beatiful person he was. Thank you creating something so beautiful that i can recognize this feeling in that i cannot even express in words.

I'd been looking forward to your short film for a while now. I wasn't exactly sure why. Now I know. Mom and I had a nice visit earlier before I came home to watch your sweet labor of love. At first, I was confused about why it's only 9 minutes long, when it took him 3 years to make. But after seeing it- all of the care, love, and attention to detail. *That's* why it took him three years to make. It's a love letter. To his craft, his dad, to the story itself. Everything about it made with meticulous care to make sure that every detail has a clear purpose. Even the TV show is made in the style of the rest of the film. The little details in things like the way they all hold hands, knowing that one made this by himself, as a tribute to his dad. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful.
