I can testify. I went from my house in Northwest Mississauga down to a train station in Southwest Mississauga and it was 12km. I was able to use separated paths inside of Subdivisions, but there was some points where I was on a 4 lane stroad with not even a bike path

This video makes me angry. In the UK we claim to want to reduce the number of car journeys being made but don't want to fund the requisite infrastructure investment (certainly not outside London). When it *is* funded, it's typically done only partially, and/or in a cack-handed way. But this proves it can be done on a large scale (inter-city, for goodness' sake!), to a high level of quality. It's infuriating.

Thoroughly agree, EastStandManc. I'm a Brit living in NL. It's cycling heaven here, whether you're doing it as a sport or just for commuting or shopping. Britain is rubbish in comparison.

Even worse in Ireland. As a cyclist, you mostly have to be an unwelcome guest on roads that are designed to let cars and trucks speed and get away with as much crap as they want, and share these roads with hostile car and truck users with a primitive hostile mindset towards cyclists. It's horrible.

Always wondered how to pronounce Nijmegen! :)
@JulesStoop
@JulesStoop 7 жыл бұрын
The combination 'ij' is actually a single vowel in Dutch. A letter in our alphabet, next to but distinct from 'y'. The pronunciation is close to how an English speaker would say 'ai' or 'ey', and never like 'idge' or 'itch'. This is also the reason why both glyphs are in upper case when they're at the start of a proper name or geographical name (e.g. IJmuiden, IJsbrand).

I cycled the Rijnwaalpad last year. Although it is generally wonderful, the signage in the urban parts of both Arnhem and Nijmegen are very poor, especially around Lent. People who use it regularly have no problems, but for a first time user it's confusing. I missed the 'green bridge' completely.

3:00 could it be possible for the installation of a device 30m from the intersection in which cyclist would touch with their hands as they pass by it and would activate a traffic light signaling the cars to stop. It would take away all the guess work and would guarantee the safety of the cyclist as well as his priority.

that bit in Bemmel is idiotic, you have to make 3 90 degree turns with a radius of no more that a metre or so, within 10 metres of each other. pulling the intersection 5 metres further would have eliminated 2 of them. it's doable on a regular bike, but on a tricycle, especially with 2 front wheels i have use the wedge curbs to lift one front wheel and round the corner on 2. with no visibility around the first corner

@@switzerlandch4986 There's a lot of historic rivalry between Arnhem and Nijmegen. Nijmegen was the largest city of the NL from before Roman times until the 12th century. Arnhem became the provincial capital in the Middle Ages and suppressed Nijmegen in several ways. The rivalry between the two has become a way of life for centuries.

why dont you show the situation where the road is only one way and very small : here you get passed by e-bikers that go faster and you have to stop biking besides your partner and go behind her . That happes too often and is troublesome.

Most of the time speed bikes are NOT allowed on this bicycle highway due to sick regulations that equals the speed pedalec as a stinky and noisy moped with combustion engine. Dutch bicycle infrastructure is one of the best in the world but the regulations are conservative and counteractive to new and promising developments.

Then I see no future for speed pedelecs in the Netherlands. I would never buy a speed pedelec then because I would refuse to cycle on the road together with cars and trucks when there is a perfect cycle infrastructure. I am wondering what motorists are thinking seeing a bicycle on the road - that's how they look like - doing around 35 km max.! I have a speed pedelec myself and I cannot remember when I was able to made the maximum supported speed (45 km/h). This speed is very exhausting, so usually i am doing around 30, 35. (Inside the city often only 25...) And with that speed i should be on the road? Why not making a speed limit inside the city. Porsche's or Ferrari's are also allowed on streets with 30-km-speed limit although they can do 200 km/h. But I live in Switzerland, our cycle infrastructure in the citys is poor and nothing compared to the Netherlands, but speed pedelecs are allowed where regular bicycles or slower pedelecs are allowed and it works. And they are booming very much. Even the normal pedelecs are sold in high numbers (every 4th bicycle is a pedelec now).

panlomito Well, the debate on this topic isn't over. The elderly see this as a perfect opportunity to ban any fast cyclist (mopeds are already banned here) while it's proven lethal to ride as a vehicle among cars. See the video on this page at 6:00 deorkaan.nl/levensgevaarlijk-snelfietsen-door-wormerveer/ . Yep. This really looks like some British road rage to me. That's why the Dutch Cyclists Union (Fietsersbond) and the RAI Association raivereniging.nl/dossiers/speed-pedelec (these are the lobbyists for vehicle manufacturers) want to legalise these bikes on those "fietssnelwegen". After all, those paths are designed to cope with speeds up to 45 km/h. It's a pity if this money is going to be wasted if only slow recreational cyclists are going to use it.
@HelenaRG71
@HelenaRG71 7 жыл бұрын
Everything in this video you linked i could have predicted. Car drivers see a bicycle. I don't know how it's communicated in the Netherlands to motorists that they should now expect speed pedelecs on the road. (Do they know what a "speed pedelec" is?) And as nobody can make 45 km/h all the time (or simply never), car drivers will not understand what this cyclist is doing ont he road. If you do not change these laws, I foresee accidents with speed pedelecs on the road. And no helmet will save you if a car drivers rolls over you. As I said in my first post, i am usually doing 30, 35 km, that's a good speed where I do not get sweaty and exhausted. On a road, where cars can do 50 or more, I cycle on the side of the road (for sure not in the gutter, but it is also not allowed to cycle in the middle of the lane all the time!) so cars can overtake more easily. But there are still too many car drivers overtaking too close, so in a country, where there is such a fantastic bicycle infrastructure, i would refuse to cycle on the road.
