It's funny how Wogan is expecting a punk rocker type who sets out to offend, and instead gets a studious, thoughtful man who has worked hard on his art.
@richardathome65
@richardathome65 3 жыл бұрын
No, I disagree; Wogan knew exactly what to expect. He'd been in the business long enough to recognise the difference between actor and character. Part of the interview was Wogan asking Rik whether people in the street confuse him with his characters, which pretty much disproves your theory that he would do exactly that. In fact, Wogan seemed to thoroughly enjoy the stand up routine and the interview. Well done Terry, I say! And of course, very insightful answers from Rik; the guy was a genius.

Although this is all about how wonderful, articulate, smart, and funny Rik was, I also have to appreciate the brilliant interview style of Wogan. He asks great questions, leads the conversation in a natural manner that never feels like he's railroading, and allows Rik to expand, joke, or be serious as he wishes. He's non-confrontational which allows Rik to relax and be unguarded but he still asks quite probing questions. A great interviewer that shows how it's one of those jobs that when done well, you almost don't notice how well it's being done.

Are you sure, you didn't hear that about a different comedian? While it's true, that many comedians are rather tragic insecure people, from all I ever heard, Rik was the exception to the rule. Happy childhood, could work with the people he got along with, great creative liberty, wholesome family life ... I'd say aside from his accident that almost killed him in 1998, there were no demons haunting him. He just learned very early on to protect himself and his privacy from nosy journalists. He could be very candid in interviews at times, but he didn't chose this too often.

I think comedians are the most courageous people ever. They are often, if the best imo, so incredibly sensitive and compassionate. And shyness I have no doubt most of them have. I don't understand how these beautiful people get up there simply to help entertain others and possibly get them to laugh. The hours are shit, it's uncertain, and you have to be yourself very much as a comedian, even if it might just be a persona. He was so beautiful. Jfc, from the little I've seen of Wogan (in a kiwi) he's no bloody Parkinson is he. I find him extremely grating.

I haven’t seen too many interviews done by Rick Mayall, but I actually felt that this was onetime when we saw the real person behind all the characters! I saw a collection of memories made after his death, and kept repeatedly hearing the sentence “Rick Mayall was very attractive, née good looking, as well as being well balanced, humble and kind” which to be honest I never thought I would be able to envision BUT this interview gave me the breakthrough I’d been looking for! Totally agree. I think in every other interview after this he had become so successful that he got through it solely being in character that he wasn't this open and honest again. A shame, because he clearly had a deep knowledge and comedic vision that was obfuscated by the crowd wanting him to be "Rik". If you'll forgive me dragging the Simpsons in, it's a touch of the Bart "I didn't do it" story.

The young ones were real life. If you showed a student that today, they wouldn't believe it. You got a YTS. Or college. The poor college kids where l lived. They smelt bad, scruffy, so poor, starving. But really clever. You had to be good to go to college. You also had to live like a vagrant. In my case. Family needed my wages. Gave it all up. No college or university for me. Missed my way. Wanted to work in advertising. That was never going to happen. Used to baby sit for a kid that was a real problem for his parents, could not get a baby sitter due to his behaviour. I taught him how to draw over a 3 year period and the rules of pencil art. He now owns a massive advertising agency. Is that a coincidence. I don't know. He doesn't seem to remember. But l don't mind.

This is so crazy. I used to watch all of Rik's stuff when I was a kid, a teenager. Even though he played all these little-boy-eager-to-please characters, he always seemed so grown up. Adults were always old and the brilliant funny ones were always like ancient trees to me. Now, I'm only roughly a year away from how old he was in this interview. He actually is my age, and you can see how young he really was here, how he was shy and sweet and still figuring the whole showbusiness thing out. It's crazy to grow up and see that, right?

I got into a lot of trouble in my first year high school English class. We were. tasked with reading an excerpt from a book in front of the class, so I chose the “Let’s Swear” part of Bachelor Boys. I got in trouble because I was crying laughing over it so much, I let slip that I ‘can’t fucking breathe’ and my teacher made me go to the headmasters office for swearing.

Only a British audience? We LOVED IT in Australia!!! My dad claimed to loathe The Young Ones for weeks... then Alexi Sayle did the Mussolini ‘I just make stupid noises’ song after hassling Neil for wanting to be in the Special Branch. At the end of the song I looked at Dad and he had tears in his eyes, genuine tears of joy/hilarity... one of the best, true bonding moments we ever shared. Geniuses, all of them.

Money. The Darkness. The Deep state. The culture of eternal selfism. You can tell from this interview he would not do something just for money if he was against it or did not care for it. He did what he did out of love of it. Now everything is driven by greed. You cannot have enough, get enough, own enough... even if you have everything, it's not enough. We have rejected sense, morals, God and decency all for personal gain. Everyone wants fame for doing nothing. It is a literal cultural black hole, because the culture is a rotten one.
