he was definitely playing for real in this clip. It's pretty obvious, especially because after he is playing, you can see that his lips are white from the pressure.

While he studied theater arts in college Mr. Frakes was a member of the famed Penn State Blue Band, so he has some musical competency. He's not an amateur just doodling around on the 'bone.

I read in an interview with Jonathan Frakes that his portrayal of Riker was influenced by, among other things / characters, Mike Farrell's portrayal of B.J. Hunnicutt in " MASH ". I think I can see this in some Riker scenes.

And when David Ogden Stiers guest starred in an episode one of the console screens had 4077 in the bottom code :) I seem to find MASH everywhere I look lately, I just watched The Newsroom and there was a reference to Klinger. But I may just have MASH on the brain, I just wrote a dissertation on it :D

The audio was definitely added in later. (Source: I play trombone) There are times when the pitch doesn't change when he's moving the slide. (0:09 - but to be fair, we don't really see him at this scene) Also, there are a couple times when he takes his lips away from the mouthpiece a bit too early (0:23) But as far as I can tell, it's the correct positions and everything. It's very obvious that he can actually play trombone!

You see, that's the beauty of the show though. With all these advances in science, Riker still plays an old trombone and Picard still enjoys opera. There's a sort of sophistication with it. A real class act. That's why those dumb space drums in the movies looked so gay.
@stirnersretrowave50948 жыл бұрын
+Baby Pizza I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Those damn drums have always bothered the hell out of me considering the crew almost always played old instruments in the show and spin-off media.

It might be this clip actually. If you listen to it from the actual episode (streaming, DVD, blu ray, etc) the pitch is lower. I think often KZfaq clips are slightly sped up. I can often tell because their voices sound too high to me.
