Yo e I remember you. This is d-rock from Harlem. I had cut a Latin king and he was looking to cut me back and you pushed me on the ground. Saved me from getting cut. True story good dude. I’m a law abiding citizen now I live in Portland and have 4 kids and one grandchild. Crazy times early 90’s.

I was a C.O. in Connecticut for 20 years and I stuck to this man's same philosophy..Give the inmates what their supposed to get,treat all with respect and you'll avoid 99% of the problems in there.Much respect to you C.O. and I wish we could have worked together..
@BENNY_MAC
@BENNY_MAC 5 ай бұрын
As a former inmate you're 100% correct! Truth be told I actually preferred the CO'S who just went by the book and were fair. I didn't like the CO'S who were so lenient that it caused problems because inmates would be getting high and drunk constantly causing problems. Also didn't like the Robocop ones who shook down every cell all day and were always in a bad mood wanting to write you up for every little thing. Right down the middle guards were my favorite personally.
@rotweilerscholar1181
@rotweilerscholar1181 5 ай бұрын
Rikers is a different galaxy though. Prisoners respect one thing;violence. CO's back then operated like a gang just like the inmates. The fear of violent repercussion kept the inmates in check. Today Prisoners don't have that fear and respect for the CO.s. That's why they disrespect them and attack them. I am a firm believer in the Survival of the Fittest, Alpha Male mentality. You put a group of men together and those dynamics immediately go into effect. In Rikers Island multiply that intensity x 1000 grimy NYC style What makes Rikers Island so bad is that New York City Packrat effect. 8 million people in an overpopulated city makes us bat crazy. It's equivalent to being packed in a sardine can. You become super aggressive and violent even before you get locked up. Then you are put in a gladiator environment and forced to fend for yourself.

Hey Ian, I’ve been on KZfaq for many years, but I’ve only commented 2 times in all those years. This will be my 3rd. You also have another subscriber. Just wanted to say the interview was on point. You just guided him to tell his story and never cut him off or short. A lot of podcasters can’t do that. Definitely an ego thing I imagine. You can tell this man is truly a good human being. Aside from seeing the pain on his face you can hear it in his voice. I feel for him because he still carries all that trauma with him. It’s a shame we don’t have more like him. Teaching men in prison to be men. Holding them accountable for their actions, but still treating them with dignity. He’s an old school treasure. That’ll slap you upside your head if you mistake his kindness for weakness. My kind of guy. You need to get him back for a Part 2 if you can. Haven’t had a chance to read the comments yet, but I’m sure he resonated with everyone. Keep up the good work! And you need to start selling some of your own merch I’d buy a T-shirt 🤑🫵🫡

As a CO we really don’t like to be called “Prison Guards.” We don’t guard anything, we’re officers on the inside just like a street cop is a officer on the outside. Other than that I’ve always tried to be fair, respectful and consistent throughout my career. Some inmates respect that and some of them don’t. That’s just way is inside and out.

Brooklyn in the house! Let me just say this man right here is really a home grown product of Brooklyn, New York and he is absolutely a special individual from his backstory of being in the streets to gettin his life straightened out on a professional level and the amount of stories he has of helping inmates and co workers alike..it really takes someone with a big heart and soul to work in such a violent and chaotic environment for over 20 years and still come out Clean..God Bless

I was a former officer as well. I can relate to his stories. Often say I wish I was an officer in his day when times were different. Prison is too political now, that's why I resigned & didn't retire there.

My dad’s cousin and a family friend both were co at rikers at the same time as he was there. They were older than him as they started in the 1970’s. I would always see them with black eyes and stitches. They would tell me crazy stories of how violent it was. My dad’s cousin was constantly taking on the inmates as he was frequently stationed in the kitchen/mess hall where fights constantly broke out in which he would get dragged into them. The family friend did say that as long as you respected the inmates that you usually got respect back but you still were tested.
