welding magnets make a great third arm for holding panic bars up while inserting screws. Also insert the rim cylinder into a thin wall pvc pipe the appropriate length cut a slot the length of the pipe so you can insert it into the door through the cylinder hole. Then you can tighten the rim cylinder screws without distorting the door.

Hi Jason. Wow. That was a fun job. I bet. Just proves you have to be prepared for things not to go as planned. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. It just shows that you can't buy experience. I bet a newbie would have been stumped and not known what was going wrong.

Nice video. Teck tip...i use Horible Freight (US)Pricess auto (Canada)big welding magnets and a piece of 3"wide..mild steel flat bar to create a shelf to support the panic bar while I mess around with the install...

So someone actually did it. I remembered the influx of reality tv shows that went into exterminators and all kinds of stuff. And as I locksmith I wondered what if I took a camera along. But I knew it couldn't do very well. As i expected though. Its interesting to watch back. Thanks for sharing your experiences. You remind me a lot of myself.

I’ve got one. Just don’t over do it on the nutsert. Or you will be drilling the darn thing out! I happen to know from personal experience with those darn things!

So what about the inside cylinder? I'm getting ready to do this today, but I didn't see where you replaced the inside cylinder?
@selock
@selock 3 жыл бұрын
Once you pull the main cap you will see (as I recall) two or three screws holding the bracket mechanism for the lock. There is also a long round cam cylinder that the tailpiece engages with. I didn't have to pull the inside cylinder on this one cause it wasn't loose :) Its not hard to figure out though once you get the cap off

This job required talent and tenacity, nerve and verve, and only one person has these noble attributes in the land of Jackson, Mississippi, and that is the prince of Fondren. Also known as locksmith extraordinaire, creator and director of cinematography for SE Lock and Key. Job well done, bro!

I have a nutsert tool but I can't get my hand around it to pull it tight so I just use a small bolt tool and wrench. Some days you just have to go the extra mile (or half hour), good job Jason.

They seriously overpaid for a Von Duprin when a Detex is easier to service and is cheaper with R&R.

I think the von duprin is more secure. I recently replaced a detex unit on a best buy receiving door because someone pried the full length security astragal away then pried the door open breaking the latch on the panic device (the door held up well). That same week I visited a restaurant back door with a von duprin unit to quote a new door and frame due to the damage but the attempted intruder didn't gain access and the von duprin unit is reuseable. Of course, the best buy intruder may have had a longer pry bar.

I think you did a great job the only thing I would add would be an impact wrench instead of the ratchet but you still deserve kudos for perseviring.

How did people fix stripped holes in metal prior to "Nutsert"? Just drill and tap for bigger screws?

That door looks battered on the upper part of the face. Why Never let the tip touch? Quickserts are a pita. What was in that place worth stealing? Pro Tip- Put a shop towel or glove between your hand and the allen wrench when you are putting extreme torque on it like that. They can BREAK and the edge will cut like a razor, making much blood and pain. I know this first hand. Try your Dewalt impact driver on the Quickserts in a piece of scrap. FO REAL

What tool did you use to cut that tailpiece? I usually have to grab a dremel with a cut off wheel and a pair of needle nose pliers when there are no pre-cut sections on the tailpiece.
