Love this video! I recently made GM in RFRO and agree 100% with everything you said, but one thing I would like to add: a match is NOT the time to test the new stuff you did to your equipment. I shot a match last year where a guy had a $1,200 10/22, and it jammed every stage, and almost every string, for the first 3 stages. I asked him if this was common during practice and he said "no". I asked him if he did anything different to the gun, "no, but this is the first time I used these mags". Duh. They were clear mags from a non-Ruger make. He had his old mags with him, started using them, and the gun ran fine the rest of the day. Pretty guns don't win matches, reliable ones do. I use Auto Match for practice only because lot to lot can be 100% reliable, to having 5 misfires or more in 325 for another lot. Agreed that you can't dry fire enough, you have to be able to shoot a stage subconsciously. I find that about 80% of the shooters at a match take it seriously, the other 20% are there only to shoot their guns at something other than paper. I also use winter and summer lube, no one else but you has ever talked about this, amazing. About the Ruger 10 round factory mags. I recently got 3 new ones that were hanging up. I took them apart and the follower (spiral part) was too long end to end, so I sanded a few thousands off and they work fine now. I deburr the metal part on the underside where the rim of the cartridge slides for smoother feeding, and only wind them to 1.5 turns, so I need all the help I can get! I use a reduced power spring because I have a 6" sleeved barrel and it won't function without doing this. I am only making pistol pressures in an action that is designed for rifle length barrels. I do have a channel, "Al Frangipane" if you would like to check out what I shoot. An update to my first one with the white stock is the one with "the lightest stock on the planet". I don't think you have enough subs, so I just joined!

Thanks for watching and subscribing to Al. I completely agree with you on the new equipment and great pointing that out. Also, an interesting find with mags I will have to keep an eye out for that. I will be checking your videos out as l always like to see new equipment. Congratulations on making GM, not easy nowadays.

I’m thinking of getting into rimfire competition and the points made were appreciated. Having shot IPSC and 3 gun, some of these are transferable but rimfire has its peculiarities.

Nice info. Been shooting SCSA for about 1-1/2 years now. I'm shooting a Bergara BXR Carbon.with a C-More red dot. Did a little polish on the trigger parts and it's awesome. I use the Ruger 10 round mags and change after each string. From the factory this gun has a Benz chamber, titanium plated bolt, extended mag release, 30 MOA integrated pick rail, threaded for suppressor, and weighs in at 4.7lbs. I use CCI Mini Mag Round nose ammo. It is very reliable and last Saturday it ran 100% as it usually does. Although based on a Ruger 10/22, the trigger group is a bit different. The springs are more like an AR. I clean it after every match. At about $650 it's ready to go except for sights. Could not be happier with it. I'm almost 75 years old and usually the oldest guy out there. I'm also a USPSA CRO and SCSA endorsed.

Awesome advice James. I’ll be shooting my first RFPO match and I’m going to lock in much of what you said. Hope your back is better. Many of us can relate.

Funny you mention cold “does things to guns”. Here in florida when it’s 95F and 90% humidity that ALSO does things to guns I swear I see more jams in the middle of summer. You hit the nail about reliability and throughly cleaning your guns and being smart with your lube. Apply a small amount of grease on the sliding parts don’t go spraying oil where it doesn’t need to be. You want to focus on the action parts feed ramps and chamber area. Also firing pin channels on all 22lrs IME. Bolt face especially under the extractor. I use picks small brushes and Q tips. This is a precision job! Gun bone dry other than the grease in the right spot. I use white lithium it tells me when it is and when it’s dirty. I realize that could be bad in cold places but…. Florida.

Good way to prevent temperature related issues is to put handwarmers inside gun cases and ammunition storage containers to keep them above freezing. Don't heat them so much that they condense moisture upon removal from the container in the cold air, but just in that 50 degree window where they are less prone to failures.

Great video! Just found your channel and have learned a lot. May I ask what back trouble you're having. I have sciatica and it is starting to affect how long I can spend at a match. I do ok at a 6 stage club match but have trouble in a major. Not sure how to deal with it. I found your channel while trying to make a decision between Tippman or 10-22 for steel challenge. I do IDPA & USPSA but have not done steel challenge and would like to get knowledge before making selection of gear. You have answered many of my questions. Thanks!

Hi Rick, I'm glad you are enjoying my channel. I have a badly ruptured disk at the bottom of my back that is pushing on the nerve bundle and is causing me a lot of sciatic pain amongst other problems. Dr's want to go in and cut that piece out. I'm hoping to have that done in the next couple of weeks as it has got to the point that I just can't do much of anything. The surgery is minor, but the downside is that the recovery is a couple of months due to the risk of reherniating. Now to your tippmann vs 10 22 delimma. I would go 10 22 and not look back, the aftermarket selection of part and reliability is great. All of the top shooters I have witnessed are shooting some versions of a 10 22, simply put most 10 22s beat the ar platforms in every category. But if you did go for an ar15 type, then the tippmann would be my choice with the only downside of being a little bit on the heavy side.

@@jameslaney2097 Looking at starting with the Fletcher open top match rifle. A bit heavier than yours (4 lbs.) but easier to clean and hold zero. Any opinion on that model? Thanks!
@jameslaney2097

@Rick Williams I had to go look that one up as I have not seen anyone using it. Interesting concept, but I'm not a fan of their factory configuration. If you put a holosun 510 on there, it would be just under 5 lbs. If the rifle is balanced good it's not a problem, but if not balanced good, you will notice every once. You will also be limited in optic placement, which is going to limit you fine tuning the balance. This one is personal preference, but I prefer the optic further back, and on that receiver, you have to place it pretty far forward. If I was going that route, I would just buy the receiver and put the rifle together with the components you want. You can do better for steel challenge with a different stock and barrel than what's coming on their configuration for about the same price.

Do you have 22 pistols where chamber is reamed slightly over spec more for reliability ? If so how much over reaming tolerance compared to like any non competition 22 chamber ?
@jameslaney2097
@jameslaney2097 3 ай бұрын
I have not had a need to modify my chambers but I would try to avoid the bentz and match chambers and stick with a sporting chamber. My research of volquartsen which is on most of my stuck has a proprietary chamber that is somewhere in between a bentz and sporting chamber.

@jameslaney2097 Yeah, I've been shooting Steel Challenge for a year, 9mil Production and now CO. Love watching th rimfire rifles, looked fun. Now building a "budget" 10 22. "Budget"=all things are relative. Hahaha. I'd like to know how to tweak the mags. Definitely like the idea of drilling a hole to see the 10th one. Can you add that the the video? Thanks and good luck next weekend
