Want to 'kill' raiders before they even enter your map? This RimWorld Wealth Management Guide and Tutorial will help you do just that. It also answers all the following: What is wealth? How do you manage wealth? What counts as wealth? What doesn't count as wealth? Why should you manage wealth? And many more.
This is longer than my normal RimWorld guide content but is a massive topic. I've included a ton of timestamps so you can jump around as needed. You can also read the text version of the guide over at my website: adamvseverything.com/guides.
Huge thanks to MortalSmurph on my Discord, as this is the first joint guide we've made.

Sorry about the slightly worse video quality on this guide. This is the first time I have worked with someone else to make a guide and there was a lot of fine-tuning and learning. Future guides, even co-op ones, will have the video quality that you've seen in the past. Having said that, I don't think the video quality is terrible, and you can still get all the applicable information out of this. I'm looking forward to making a ton more guides this year ranging from more simple things to more number-heavy things. Let me know what you'd like to see a RimWorld guide on in your own comment below (I get notifications on new comments but not replies for some reason). And, as always, thanks for watching!

Yeah, it is a tricky thing to balance at times. It's one reason I use the 'sacrifice method' in a bunch of my runs. I'll have to make a video about that sometime as well.

The long and short of his sacrifice method is to recruit a pawn that he doestn want, then kill him. When a pawn dies it lowers raid points that the story teller can throw at you. I downloaded a mod that lets you ignite anything while drafted. I didn't get why raiders and pyros could light things but I would need some kind of weapon to make fire. Definitely a mod I would think needs to be in the base game
@AdamVsEverything

Yeah, I would really like that too and have talked about it being silly before. Even tribals apparently have some sort of quick-light ability/item. What's the name of the mod?
@Komyets
@Komyets 6 ай бұрын
@@AdamVsEverythingI know this is a very old comment but I figured maybe you'd still like to know the answer haha. A mod made by Owlchemist named "Scattered Flames" has an optional "Ignite" gizmo that can be enabled in its mod options. The mod itself mainly affects how fire looks visually, and also enables you to toggle the "firewatch" function of the game (the thing that triggers rainfall whenever too much fire is on the map) Lastly, it has that neat "Ignite" gizmo for your pawns. So there you have it :P

I'll be replying to this comment with updates. There are surely some mistakes. There are some things we forgot to add. There will be patch changes. Biocoded Weapons: Don't count. Flowers: Don't count. Thin Roof: Doesn't count. The video states: "All implants always count at full value". More accurately: they always count at full market value when implanted. When not implanted implants are an item and the market value is affected by hit points.

Great guide, thank you! I have 800+ hours in Rimworld and used to play on highest difficulty. Strategic Wealth Management is essential there and I noticed that I actually dislike this part. Like a gold meteor drops and I am not even exited for it, because "don't want that wealth". Turned down the difficulty a bit and now enjoy that much more - it's still basically the same difficulty overall, but you don't have to throw stuff away all the time

The big things I learned: 1) Losing a caravan is still a win, since everything I put on caravans is a disposable liability anyways. 2) You can park a caravan ON TOP of your colony to prevent ambushes while still storing whatever you want. You'll still have to feed the caravan, but for certain types of colonies this is an incredibly valuable trick when transition from early to mid game. 3) Non Ancient Danger ruins, including buildable roads add to wealth, and should be deconstructed or destroyed. Non-buildable junk and non-buildable roads (asphalt, dirt, etc) has no wealth value. Everything else I already knew, but if I didn't watch this guide I wouldn't have found the invaluable nuggets of knowledge that slipped through the cracks. Thanks a bunch! You just might have saved my current playthrough!

One of my problems when I play rimworld is hoarding, and its a major issue. I usually take EVERYTHING. Every bit of clothing off captives and corpses, every weapon. So I can scrap it down or for trading. But I often have such storage issues of.. just so much stuff, tons of foods and beer, base materials such as wood and metal. Or vast sums of silver I intend to use to build perfect research, cooking and hospitals and haven't had a chance to build when raids come. And I can't make myself part way with it all. I have a hoarding problem, mostly stemming from real life issues and problems. I cannot make myself give up all of the stuff I collect, so wardening down how many attackers down is a major thing I need to address. That and needing to find ways to counter raids when they come with 1-5 mortar pieces of their own and perfectly targeting my own mortar pieces (the few times I have actually gotten my hands on them.) And I usually just end up defaulting to building in the coldest regions of the map, in the mountains, having armies of insects. Such freezing cold temps to kill off every raider, dying from the freezing cold temps or packs of starving wolves/walrus. I don't know if its from a mod or not, but I remember a time I was able to get a psionic or.. something that controled the weather. And I made it EXTRA cold, to the point nothing could survive on the map but within my little domain. I sure as hell couldn't leave my little complex, couldn't recruit anyone. And my few pawns all eventually passed of old age. Kinda cathartic but also depressing, unable to reproduce. But in a way, thankful to not to raise children in such a shitty environment. Trapped in a mountain for 90+ years, barley leaving. Such cold temps that could literally freeze you to death in seconds. Only knowing the peaceful life of growing crops, checking geothermal power, occasionally cooking meals, beer. Games. Tv, radio. Pet cats.. And not having to worry about much else, some worked in the mining, but most just lived peaceful lives. Not a bad way to go out really
@AdamVsEverything
@AdamVsEverything Жыл бұрын
Unless it was several weather control 'problem causers' from mechs, it sounds like a mod for sure. Or maybe a mod that increases the effectiveness of those as they typically only drop the temps by 10º each. As far as hoarding goes, if that is how you like to play there is nothing 'wrong' with it. You can use deep storage mods if you'd like. Also, burn tunnels are nice to kill raiders and have all the crap they drop burn along with them. Guide coming soonish! :P

I remember a tactic people used in the early betas for wealth management, but I didn't see you cover it in this video and I'm wondering if anyone knows if it still works. You used to be able to half-construct buildings to "hide" the wealth of the building materials. So, it was common for min-maxers to build endgame spaceship parts and forbid them to never finish constructing them, because it could take all the Plasteel/Uranium/Gold/ect out of their wealth, and as long as you didn't construct it you could always just cancel the build for 100% of your materials back.

I've been binge-watching this series, and I just want to thank you for the thought and effort that clearly goes into these videos. I really appreciate how you are careful about focusing on what's important, concise explanations, presenting data without getting lost in it, pointing out further complications for those who want to go further down the rabbit hole later, and being very, very clear that these choices are just options. Part of Rimworld's fascination for me is how incredibly flexible it is.I don't want to be told there's a "best" way to do something, because that sells this game short. I want to be told, if you make this choice, here are some implications and possible results/consequences.I enjoy seeing a creator respect the game and its myriad creative players like you do. You also have good pacing, your graphics emphasize and clarify the information you're presenting, and you break the information into manageable, logical chunks, which helps when presenting options n a game this complex. Putting information together to be digestible and interesting like you do takes a lot of time behind the scenes, so I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to do it. Also... looking at ocd stockpile of 6,300 rice... gave me some very useful information. XD One question I'm left with: when you're trying to avoid wealth inciting larger raids, what are some options for dealing with colonists' unhappiness with a lack of wealthy surroundings?

Thanks, I appreciate you watching (and the kind words)! As far as the last question, the main two things I do is use a barracks (they are extremely wealth and space efficient for the mood you can pump out of them. Make sure your barracks triples as dining and recreation and is pretty + large. You can do this for free by planting daylillies in dirt floor (they don't need sunlight). The second is scheduling. Which, after I get through this current medical situation crap, I have a guide planned for.

I'm playing the game on relatively easy settings, but am getting hammered by raids. I started to go through and triage my setup yesterday, and this helps a lot. I already burned a lot of "worthless" stuff, and am gathering all of the stuff that I can sell so that I can gift or trade it with my handful of allies. Also, I have far too much food sitting around.

I would like to profusely thank you for this guide, especially the point that fresh corpses count for wealth. I was doing a high diff ice sheet challenge and kept being confused why the raids were ballooning so out of proportion. After a lucky meteorite and building a crematorium my wealth chart looked like the American economy after the Stock Market crash of 1929.

This helped me understand why I got a 50+ man raid 10 days into my new save. I got a couple items that added around 80k each wealth to my colony. I knew wealth played a factor in how raids are calculated, I just didn't know the details. This vid helped me understand that it wasn't a mod issue (or rather, not a glitchy mod setup), just me holding on to some things that I REALLY shouldn't have held onto.

I have an obscene amount of time in Rimworld, but the way wealth works has always been the thing I hated the most. It basically means two things: 1. Technically there is no progression, playing "optimally" is basically living in the dirt and using traps. 2. It's anti fun. In most games if your smith creates a legendary sword, that would be exciting! In Rimworld you basically get it off your map ASAP.
@AdamVsEverything
@AdamVsEverything 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, it is a bit silly. Luckily they added Wealth Independent Mode, though. Highly recommend trying it out if you have not.
@entelin
@entelin 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamVsEverything I tried it, it's also kinda broken though. It just scales regardless of anything, but can also be reset by resettling. So that mode tends to be either impossible, or way too easy, depending on where you wind up in the curve. The way it should be done is also a cool extension to the gameplay the raid score should be based on an estimation of actual combat ability, but raids should be motivated by various reasons which can feed into the storytelling. For example you might get a message saying that the raiders demand some particular valuable item you have. The raiders may give you an option to just give them that item and they would leave. So then they would send one pawn into your base to get the item, and if he's successful they leave. You might get regular tribute demands, maybe at the start of the game you might get starving raiders who demand food, or any number of other reasons. But the point is it would give more meaning to the raids, and when someone invades someone else, they are going to bring what they think they need, not some overwhelming horde, or one guy with a club, something appropriate and scaled by difficulty. This way you can have fun amassing wealth and making your base pretty, which may to some degree increase the frequency of raids, but scales the raid according to what the raiders think they need.

Even if you're not wanting to min-max the game this is valuable information. I had the habit of accumulating as much wealth as possible for some reason and kept being annoyed at how often I was getting 10 person raids on my 5 person base. Depending on your playstyle this could be very punishing, but perhaps I should tell myself its okay to play at smaller levels.

I've known about wealth, and I watched the wealth of my peaceful estate/ranch rise constantly without me actually making a better fortified base or anything. Fortunately, being filthy rich by having more farmland than anyone ever should, more pen space with lots of animals than anyone should, and the necessity to sell more than half my crop every harvest season because of the excess and many of the horses I breed because I've become well known as the best horse breeder in my area has its own benefits. I cannot make special weapons, but I make certain to buy almost every skilltrainer I see, any high tech armor I see, my favorite guns have been procured by this means, and most, importantly all the doomsday missiles and triple rocket launchers they have. Literally all of them, every time. If you see a "fuck you and your entire bandit kind" button, spare no expense. I had a really lucky haul recently and had 3 of each in my armory. Thus, my version of "wealth management" is to simply accept the fact tat 50 billion enemies are coming towards me, and just to get weapons that take out 50 billion at once.
@AdamVsEverything

Yeah, it is tough not to hoard things, for sure. It feels like a good thing to have years of food and tons of extra medicine ... but RimWorld punishes for that :P
@relortal2199
@relortal2199 2 жыл бұрын
It's human nature to do so, honestly, and the game's other mechanics push you to hoard things (needing to prepare for winter, toxic fallouts and similar events, needing components to repair various things, etc). Considering there's already both a visible mechanic for punishing high wealth (in the expectations modifier) and that wealth being involved with raid scaling isn't stated anywhere outside that one custom difficulty setting, I've always felt that it's an odd mechanic to have in the game. To have it be a good idea to burn your own things to the ground or just dump money on the side of the road is just...so unintuitive.
