This unit allows me to quickly identify problem frequencies causing feedback in my PA system so that I can eliminate them right away.

Hey everyone I just found a better way to do this which reduces the overall loudness while performing the ring out. Turn up the input knob all the way on the EQ unit which will have the offending frequency light up sooner or with less actual volume. I found this to be useful while ringing out while there are other people in the venue during sound check. For example, the customers at the local bar will be less bothered if you ring out with less overall volume. Just keep your mixing board main faders down a bit to compensate. Then when you are all done, bring the EQ input back to unity and bring your master mixer faders back up. Go ahead and double check your work by pushing faders up nice and high to make sure you killed the feedback. This should help.

Great video! I just bought one of these to use for my cover band's live sound. We mostly play in small to medium sized venues with capacities ranging from 50 to 300 people and run our own sound with our own PA and have to mix from the stage. I bought this EQ along with a dbx AFS2 to help solve some feedback issues but I'm running into a small problem. Even with your latest tip of turning the input up and master faders down when ringing out a room, I'm finding that in order for the LEDs to light up and show what frequencies are feeding back, the volume still has to be insanely loud which naturally annoys the staff and patrons. Is there anything else you can think of to get around this? I've tried facing the FOH speakers in so they point right at the mics and that helped a little but with the speakers pointing in, it doesn't catch a lot of the room reflections that cause feedback once the speakers are pointing out again. And the feedback still has to be pretty loud before the LEDs light up. The dbx AFS2 works much better and catches the feedback at lower volumes but I'd also like to use the graphic EQ to further tweak some frequencies. Is there any way to increase the sensitivity on this thing?

@@guitarman3001 I'm glad to read your report. Unfortunately there is no way around making loud noises to ring out the system. The best you can do is first warn the people around you that you are going to make some brief loud noises so that you can solve them now and not have this problem during the performance. The other think I do is only push the faders up until I hear the feedback and immediately bring the volume back down, so that I am not hurting their ears for more than a second at a time. Good luck!

One point everyone is missing is that this technique not only reduces feedback but it equalizes the room and the system together. It takes out the resonances of the room and compensates for the frequency response of the entire audio system. Doing this is essential to make a venue sound as good as possible. Some buildings ring (resonate) like crazy and will need more than just a few db of correction, don't be afraid of that, you are fixing a problem. I have done this for years after trying many other techniques and equipment, this technique beats them hands down. I don't have the nice EQ presented here, I use a cellphone app called Sepctroid to find the frequencies.

Super helpful video here. I had heard about this technique but wasn't sure how to use it till now. I have a question, how do you connect your equalizer to your mixer? I am new to live sound engineering and I see some people talk about using the "insert" port while others output to the equalizer and then to the amp. Which do you use in this video and why?

You should ring out your mains first (with monitors turned off) and then visa-versa, ring out your monitors (now with the mains turned off) - especially if they're 2 kinds of speakers or speaker sizes. I like this unit, due to the fact it gives you an instant visual on where the offending frequencies are.

This is more useful during live performances when you have monitors adding sound to the room. In a studio you normally use headphones instead of speakers for monitors, so this unit wouldn’t be helping except to help shape the overall tone of the mix.

you can't the impedance of a mic input is too low,it will not work since the eq is expecting a line level input which is 30k ohms only way this would work is if you introduce an external preamp it goes mic > preamp > eq > mixer > amp

Hey Eric, I have this same EQ connected to my rack system. As you stated here about the connection between the Compressor, and the EQ, I have a question? Is it better to have the Mixer running to the EQ first, and then to the Compressor only using TRS cables? I have my Mixer running to my Compressor, and then out to my EQ, and then out to my Amp using all XLR cables. If your way is the right way, can you please explain why? Also I like the XLR cables because there is no low hum or line noise. If n you would like to email me your answers and ideas, please do so at pneal5368@yahoo.com Thanks, and look forward to hearing back from you. Peace, and many blessings...… Paul

The simpliest trick to eleminate the feedback is to raise your Speakers higher than the mic... If you keep on pulling down those eq faders you just basically bringing down the volume or gain output the same way that is why you don't get the feedback but the loudness of mic is not present.. It's totally nonsense since you keep pushing the volume more on the mic mixer lols

Nathan McDaniel true. One thing you might try is to increase the signal to your eq unit and lower the output to maintain your end output. Maybe that would get you closer to what you want. Ringing out is typically annoying so do it when others are not around if possible.
